Our President Lynne Newell, kept it well under her hat that she would be presenting our charter members with a 15 year Probus Pin. Many of the original members turned out and were delighted to receive this special recognition. There were a lot of smiling faces in the crowd, as we celebrated this milestone.

On Sunday, October 23rd the Wine Tasting group held their end of year gathering to decide their best red and white choices for the year. Again our generous hosts were Gwen and John Jackson. Twenty five of the group were present and we were treated to an extensive spread of cheeses and savory snacks. However, the most important business of the day was the tasting and evaluations of the wines. Each of the three groups brought bottles of their best white and red wines for the year. This is how they were rated: Whites 1st Deinhard Green Label Riesling from Germany $11.95 2nd Inception Chardonnay from South Africa $13.95 3rd Henry of Pelham Sauvignon Blanc from Niagara $14.95 Reds 1st Pelee Island Merlot from Ontario $10.45 2nd Meiomi Pinot Noir from California $26.95 3rd Beronia Red Blend from Spain $20.95 All these wines were good and would not be out of place at your dining table. Again we see that there are winners amongst the cheaper wines at LCBO! We also like to see which of our tasters is most in tune with the evaluation of the group. This honour falls to Bill Rogers, who’s rating was exactly the same as shown above. Well done Bill. Our wine tasting will restart in January 2017. You don’t have to be an expert in any way; just know what you like! There will be a sign-up sheet at the November meeting. Come and join us.

Time to sign up to feast with a new group for 2017. Sign up available at the November meeting, or email [email protected]. 705-788-0059 This is a wonderful way to get to know more of your Probus members. Groups of 10-12 meet once a month, rotating locations thru homes of group members. The host provides the main dish and assigns/lets people choose the re-mainder of the dishes, which may or may not follow a theme. Members provide their own bever-age of choice. New groups will be drawn up in December to start in January. We need a few more snowbirds to sign up to make 2 groups who meet May thru Oc-tober so that we can mix up the current single group. There has also been a request for a snow-body group that would meet November thru April.

You do not have to have a sit down at one table format. We do our best to mix up groups each year, but if you are concerned you may EMAIL me up to 3 pairs you feel you have been with too often or up to 3 you have not been with enough. No guarantees, but will try to match at least one of your requests. In a regular group, each couple would host twice, or each of a pair of singles would host once. Groups work with their calendars to set dates that work for their group, PLEASE BE SURE THAT THE E MAIL ADDRESS ON THE PROBUS MEMBERSHIP LIST IS CORRECT, AS THIS IS WHAT WILL BE USED TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR GROUP!!

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE NOVEMBER MEETING IS THE LAST

Photography Club CONTACT: KEN KOEHLER 705-766-9936 [email protected]

Next Meeting November 18, at 2:00 pm Koehler’s Condo. 35 Dairy Lane, Suite101

The next session of the Probus Photo Group will be on the theme "Seasons Change!", and will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday No-vember 18. Ken and Barb will be hosting at their Huntsville Condo -- 35 Dairy Lane, Suite 101.

It's been a great summer and fall weather-wise. And fortunately "the locals" who were predicting that we could get two feet of snow in October were wrong except for a few cen-timetre which quickly gave way to some more "Indian Summer". So our "photo chal-lenge" is to capture images that reflect the change of seasons this year. It's also fun to go back and look in our "archives" for pho-tos that we've taken of the same scene at different times of the year!

If you cannot appear in person, emailed im-ages to [email protected] are always wel-come. And if you'd just like to see what the Photo Group is all about, please feel free to come along and join the fun as a spectator! Ken & Barb 705-766-9936

Armchair Travellers CONTACT: DOUG BELL 705-635-1137 [email protected]

The Armchair Travellers group unfortunately has no presentation scheduled for November at this time. The situation is hopefully only temporary. If any PROBUS member is, or knows someone who is willing to show interesting photos or video clips or their travels. Please contact Doug Bell or Ken Koehler.

This month was largely regrouping and preparing for a hike in later November. Below is a col-lage of wondrous hikes in the past six months. Autumn colours were magnificent for hiking and we hope it continues well into December! Our speaker for November is a world renowned expert on snowshoeing and winter camping/trekking. Perhaps he will inspire our members to join in this winter with snowshoeing, cross country skiing and hiking on groomed trails.

For those who already have your picture in the 2016 brochure, if you would like to replace your photo with a new one, please submit it to John McCaig as soon as possible. For those who are new to the club or who have not submitted a picture in the past, we would like to include you for 2017. These people will be receiving an e mail specific to them as a reminder to submit a picture asap. The format should be a digital picture of a single person or a couple, preferably just head shots so recognition is as easy as possible in the brochure. Craig Macdonald has been smitten all his life by wanderlust, an itch to travel, not to the summits of the world’s tallest mountains, nor to distant lands and ex-otic cities, but up and down the water-ways of eastern North America.

He is an ethno-geographer, Cree-Ojibwa place-name linguist and trails expert who spent 27 years doing re-search in the area. He interviewed over 200 Anishinabai elders and traveled over 1,000 miles in the backcountry ex-ploring the nastawgan (snow shoes) and methods of travel on them. .

Craig MacDonald

Craig estimates that the nastawgan have been in use for over a thousand years. From his painstaking research and devo-tion to native-travel methods and routes, the word nastawgan has moved from the aboriginal language into the language of the modern canoeist

Please contact Helmy if you know of any-one who needs a card.

In November we welcomed Gloria and Michael Woodside, sponsored by Cathy Nystrom and Ellen Staig, James and Ra-chel Edney, sponsored by Judy and Michael Salter, and Barry Young spon-sored by Ray Ward. Welcome, and we hope you enjoy the activities and friend-ships that Probus has to offer. We now have over 200 members in the Probus Club of Huntsville. While our cap is 200, we always have a few people who don’t renew because they are mov-ing, etc., so its still a good time to invite friends to join and enjoy all of the activi-ties Probus has to offer! There were 84 members and two guests at the October 2016 meeting. New Probus members have a red dot on their name badges. Please take a few moments to introduce yourself during the coffee break, welcome them to our club, and encourage them to join the Events and Interest Groups. Have you lost or misplaced your name badge? Let me know so I can order an-other at a small cost to you.

If you have any changes to your address, phone or email information, please advise Betsy Rothwell at: [email protected].

Your PROBUS Management Committee has approved the purchase of a new sound system for our monthly meetings. This will enable all of us to better enjoy the wonderful speakers that our Vice President Barb Munro has so ably provided for us over the past year!! Thanks to Bob Mallette for his efforts in bringing this matter to a most successful con-clusion.

Susan Magee for submitting this “Dining in” photo. Looks like a fabulous group of fun diners.
