ISSUE #51 NEWSLETTER April 2016

Probus-Guildwood Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of the Month, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Guildwood Community Presbyterian Church,

140 Guildwood Parkway, Guildwood Village – Everyone is most welcome.

President’s Message

Have you seen Spring yet?

Scheduled to arrive March 21,

she’s been teasing us with

occasional sunshine, warm

weather and rain. Then,

unexpectedly she retreats

leaving us with frost, ice,

snow and bitter cold. My

snowdrops and lilies have

been nipped due to her capricious behaviour.

Even the maple sap was frozen in the collection

lines for Sunderland’s Maple Syrup Festival of

April 3. Our latest weather condition now

includes reference to the polar vortex.

Yet we are hopeful folk clearing out old

treasures, visiting local ‘spring bazaars’ and

enjoying garden presentations. Yes, check out

the Bluffs Monitor, the Scarborough Mirror or

the Beech News which are abundant with spring

celebrations. Just remember to dress warmly.

Cautiously optimistic, Wendy ed. note – Wendy requested that we delete the above

– however because of the very topical (not tropical)

nature of our President’s word – your editor has

chosen to share them with P-G. Dare I key that

spring is here…

With Probus –

you’re part of larger

community

At our March 9 Monthly

Meeting, we greeted, our

new District Director.

Initially, Probus clubs

were developed in England

in 1965 for retired and

semi-retired professional’s

and businessmen, who met

monthly for luncheons and

fraternity. The name resulted from the contraction

of the letters PRO and BUS creating ‘PROBUS’.

By 1987 Probus clubs appeared in Canada. They

are co-ed, female or male entities whose purpose

is to provide fellowship. There are 238 Canadian

clubs with 32,459 members. Each club is

sponsored by a local Rotary group. Members meet

monthly to enjoy guest speakers and participate in

additional social events. Probus is also an

international organization consisting of over 4,000

clubs with more than 300,000 members.

Bob explained that all the Ontario Probus districts

were recently adjusted so that the district clubs

would be equal in number. Probus Guildwood is

now in District #3 in which there are 30 clubs.

Our district spans from Burlington to Whitby with

all clubs located south of the 401 with the

exception of the Swan Lake club. Bob

commented that there are now plans for four

additional clubs. To learn more, check out the

Probus Canada website

http://www.probus.org/canada.htm.

And don’t forget – Volunteers most welcome for

executive and committee work – especially in

P-G.

Membership

There are currently 94 members. There were 50

members and nine guests at our March meeting.

If there are any changes in your contact

information – email Alan or mention it at the

membership table. To reduce printing costs, please

let us know if you have an email address so that

we can email the newsletter (and you’ll receive it

in colour, too).

Help keep us informed about members who are ill,

hospitalized or have had bereavement so that

Karen can send cards. Karen – 416 283-5079 by

also like to know about any member’s special

200% INCREASE – last month at

Memories of Japan

Vince, Don, Doreen, Peggy

Yes, it is true. The number of men attending the

Probus March Lunch with Friends increased by

200% over the February attendance. We all

congratulated Glenna on the 15th anniversary of

her 65th birthday. At one point Glenna had a

burning birthday candle on her head spreading

warmth and light among the 19 attendees. The

food was tasty at Memories of Japan, prices

reasonable and the camaraderie was great. It

was an afternoon well spent. Eric
