ISSUE No. 169 JULY 2017

President’s Message

Happy 150th Canada everyone. Here are some of the ways to celebrate this special birthday.

Across our beautiful country, Canadian national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas are free to everyone this year as a way of celebrating the big 1-5-0. There’s also no charge to use Parks Canada locks on our historic canals.

Celebrate Canada's 150th birthday at Canada Days! A city-wide

celebration, Canada Days presents festivities at four locations across Toronto including a four-day festival at Nathan Phillips Square from June 30 to July 3, and one-day events at Mel Lastman Square, Humber Bay Park West and Scarborough Civic Centre on July 1.

The Redpath Waterfront Festival will be held July 1-3, with live music, food from top local chefs and nautical activities.

As we celebrate this special birthday I would like to share some of the reasons why I am grateful to be a Canadian, living in this boundless, unlimited country.

From coast to coast, one beautiful vista after another, the natural beauty of our country is breathtaking. Vancouver to P.E.I. and all the wonder in between makes me grateful to be Canadian.

To live in a society that values and encourages diversity, tolerance, inclusiveness is a tremendous privilege.

Canadians rank sixth in global happiness according to a recent United Nations Survey. Canada has some of the happiest people on the planet because of long life expectancy, high average income and robust social ties, according to the survey.

It’s a Canadian virtue to apologize. Saying sorry has been found to boost happiness and strengthen relationships, according to researchers at the University of Waterloo.

We all want happiness in our lives and living in Canada offers the potential for happiness.

Despite its imperfections, universal healthcare benefits all of society and allows us to maintain a state of wellness.

The ability to pursue an education, a career of choice, limited only by your vision and determination. Each of us knows of some extraordinary person who has achieved personal success despite the obstacles because we live in a land of opportunity and potential.

I am so very grateful to be a Canadian and never more so than on this very special birthday, Canada’s 150

th.

Cheers Val

MONTHLY MEETINGS

Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Weston Golf & Country Club. Social time begins at 9:30 am and the meeting begins at 10 am.

July 20 Jaqueline Murdock is a Health Promotion Ambassador for Urban Poling. While research shows that walking improves mental and physical well being, Jaqueline will share with us the benefits of pole walking or Nordic walking, which include stability on various grades, such as up and down hill walking, and the building of upper body strength. August 17 Alan Mallory is a motivational speaker, author of “The Family that Conquered Everest”, and performance coach. Alan will share his family’s experience with the grueling expedition to the top of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. From staggering across ladders spanning bottomless crevasses and fighting the many altitude-related sicknesses, to climbing through a blizzard in the dead of night, every segment of the climb was “an exhilarating challenge”. September 21 Nancy Getty is an international speaker and published author of “Peter and the Ants, Accepting Differences”. As someone who was diagnosed with Autism as an adult, and who is the mother of twins, both on the Autism Spectrum, Nancy shares her experiences to educate, motivate and empower others. Nancy’s authentic and unique blend of humor shines through as she journeys from a life of uncertainty, anxiety and misunderstandings to one of purpose, determination and confidence. She keeps her audiences engaged as she transports them into the Aspergers/Autism culture.
