and enduring cold, wind, the threat of avalanche, ice and bottomless chasms are all part of the experience.

Alan described the preparation, the two month quest for the summit, the 20 minute enjoyment of achieving the goal and the perilous climb down. To say that his audience was spellbound would be an understatement!

He indicated that he and his family had an advantage over other climbers in that they worked out problem solving and looked out for each other. It was evident that they shared something very special, and were thankful for the opportunity.

Notice of Next Speaker Next Meeting’s (September 20, 2016) Speaker

Jane Pang, Founder and Principal of Clear View School certified Ontario teacher, her main focus is researching how art and culture education can help children find their true selves and present the best of them. She has given similar presentations to over 30 rotary clubs, government agencies, private schools and companies.

Jane Pang will speak on the essence of 5000 years of Chinese culture and its application in the modern world. Ms. Pang is founder and principal of Clear View School in Markham. She has an MA in English Language and Literature from South China Normal University, and was a university lecturer for seven years prior to coming to Toronto. As a

“Anything I really put my mind to and pursue with passion, I can achieve.”

Alan Mallory learned this from his conquest of Mount Everest. He climbed the highest mountain in the world with his father, brother and sister in 2008. Braving the challenges that Everest offered makes for exhilarating story telling that our membership enjoyed at the August meeting.

At 29,000 feet plus, Everest presents climbers with the ultimate challenge. Moving from base camp to base camp and achieving higher altitudes at each, acclimatizing one’s body so the diminishing oxygen supply can be tolerated

Interest Groups PROBUS Club of Port Perry

Tim Casey, Interest Groups Chair [email protected]

Hiking Group – Bill Morrison [email protected]; 905-439-0484

The Hiking Interest Group took their first hike at Durham Forest on Monday, August 22 with ten members participating. The second hike was held on Friday, September 9th at Long Sault Conservation Area. The hikes are around 6 to 10 km on clean trails at a moderate pace. On occasion the group will be stopping by a local eatery for lunch or snacks following the hike. The group welcomes additional members, so contact Bill Morrison.

Music - Ukulele Group – Andy Stevenson [email protected]; 905-449-0719

The beginners’ course for ukulele is due to start on September 13th from 10-12 AM. At the present time there are 12 people coming out to the first lesson. The course will run for eight weeks. Please contact Andy Stevenson for more information.

Port Perry PROBUS is less than 4 months old and we already have around 15 interest groups in operation or in the process o f being formed. The success o f PROBUS and its service to its membership is entirely dependent on its volunteers, and that’s no where more apparent than in the Interest Groups. We have nearly 100 interest areas identif ied by the membership, and you may have others to suggest as we ll . What we need are coordinators for groups s ince a group can’t get started or be run without a coordinator. So pick an activity that is of interest to you (see the interest areas survey on the website) and volunteer as a coordinator. We’l l he lp you a l l along the way. You’ l l l ikely f ind many other C lub members who have a s imilar interest and are extremely grateful that you’ve volunteered to organize the group. And you get to make many new friends in the process. Contact Tim Casey at [email protected] (647-521-2565)

[email protected]; 416-573-0597

Suzanne Redford is the coordinator of this group, and its first meeting was scheduled for August 11th. As we noted in the July newsletter, since there are many more people interested in a Book Club than can be accommodated in this first group, anyone who has not been contacted by Suzanne but who indicated an interest on their interest group survey form for the book club has been put on a waiting list. If space opens up in Suzanne’s group or if another coordinator steps forward, those individuals on the waiting list will be contacted.

Golf Group – Dave Matthews [email protected]; 905-982-2702

This group has met three times to enjoy the Sunnybrae Golf Course. We meet every other Thursday. Please contact Dave Matthews for more information.

Book Club Group – Suzanne Redford

Healthy Eating Group – Suzanne Redford [email protected]; 416-573-0597

This group will likely be starting up in September. People who expressed an interest in the group on their survey forms have already been contacted. If anyone else is interested, please contact the coordinator, Suzanne Redford.

Tim Casey, Interest Groups Chair [email protected]

Scrapbooking Group – Kathy McLeod [email protected]; 905-982-1812

This group still has room for more members, and it’s a fascinating activity. So whether you’re an experienced scrapbooker or just starting out, this can be a great sharing experience and a lot of fun combined. Please contact Kathy for more details.

Beginners Bridge Group – Judy Anderson Group [email protected]; 905-985-8719 The Beginners Bridge group is currently full and the first meeting is scheduled for September 20th. The coordinator is Judy Anderson.

Euchre Group – Ann Berube & Margaret Adamson [email protected]; 905-985-7102 [email protected]; 905-773-2878 Euchre has two interest groups getting ready for their first games. The Afternoon Euchre group, coordinated by Ann Berube, has 9 members scheduled for the first game on September 23rd at 1:00 PM. They would be glad to welcome a few more players, so contact Ann for more information. The Evening Euchre group, coordinated by Margaret Adamson is scheduled to meet on September 20th.

Cards – Hand & Foot Group – Louise Bardswich [email protected]; 905-914-0677

The Hand and Foot Card Group had its first meeting last week and has decided to schedule weekly meetings so group members can choose their own frequency of attendance – weekly, bi-weekly or monthly – or as their schedule permits. The beauty of Hand and Foot is that even if only two people show up, you can still have a game! The group will be meeting Wednesday afternoons at 1:30. The group welcomes new players. For those not familiar with the game, Hand and Foot is similar to Canasta, but it’s easy to learn. For further details on the group, please contact Louise Bardswich.

Breakfast (Mixed) Group – Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected]; 905-986-4078 Two Breakfast Interest Groups have been formed and are presently filled to capacity. There is a waiting list large enough to accommodate two more groups, so we need a coordinator (or coordinators) to get those groups underway. One of the current groups will be meeting on the 2nd Thursday of each month and the other will be meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month. We’re trying to keep each Breakfast group to about 10 members to better enable all the attendees to participate in the discussion over breakfast. The first group breakfast was on Thursday, September 8th at Hyland Family Restaurant in Port Perry. The group seemed to have a wonderful time meeting each other and conversing about a variety of subjects while enjoying a tasty breakfast. For information on the Tuesday or Thursday morning Breakfast groups, please contact Mary-Anne. To put your name on the waiting list for future Breakfast Interest Groups being formed or to volunteer as a coordinator for one or more of those groups, please contact Tim Casey at [email protected] (647-521-2565).

Travel Group – Judy Spring

Tim Casey, Interest Groups Chair [email protected]

[email protected]; 905-447-4557

We now have a new Travel Interest Group forming. The primary purpose of the Travel group will be to help the group members become more informed about travel through speakers and sharing information and to assist with facilitating travel for those who are interested. The first meeting will be in the sunroom at Colonel Mustard’s (Port Perry) on Thursday, October 6th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We’re suggesting that those who attend at least buy a beverage in appreciation for the restaurant providing the room, and lunch can be purchased as well by those so inclined. Bob Ashdown and Judy Spring will be providing information on travel in Portugal since both were there this past summer. In addition the group will be deciding at this initial meeting how it prefers to operate in the future. Anyone interested in joining this group, and particularly those planning to attend the October 6th meeting, should either rsvp to Judy Spring at [email protected] or 905 447-4557 (email preferred please) or there will be a sign-up sheet at the next Membership meeting on September 20th. Space is limited, so please let us know if you will be attending so we can ensure there will be sufficient seating.

We have a lot of interest in a Theatre Interest Group from Club members, and we’ve already done the initial survey of the theatre interests of those who previously expressed an interest in such a group. But what we need at this point is a coordinator (or coordinators) to take on the operation of this group. For those considering the coordinator role, we’ll provide assistance, and there’s a lot of advice available in how to make such a group successful, but most importantly you definitely won’t be alone in making such a group work. So send an email or give a call to Tim Casey at [email protected] or 647-521-2565 if you’d like to give the coordinator role a try. It’ll be a lot of fun.

Updates on New Interest Groups We are also presently working with volunteer coordinators to possibly form some additional interest groups including Dining About Town, Lawn Bowling, Motorcycling and Computers. So please watch the Port Perry PROBUS website and next month’s newsletter for news about these possible new groups.

One thing all members can help us with is that of responding to emails from PROBUS volunteers. For instance when an interest group is being formed, we typically send out an email to all of those members who previously expressed an interest in that interest area in order to gauge if each such individual remains interested in joining the group and perhaps soliciting the members’ opinions as to how the group might operate. In addition an email is usually sent out to the potential group to schedule the first meeting. And finally the coordinator often will send out an email to the group before each regular meeting. If you get any such emails, we ask that you take a minute to reply. If you’re not interested in the group, just reply with a “not interested”. We don’t need to know why and won’t take any offense at the shortness of the reply. And if interested, just say “interested”. If there’s a survey and you would prefer to answer it by phone, just call the sender for a quick conversation. If the email is related to scheduling a meeting, just let us know yes or no as to whether you can attend – again, no explanations either way are necessary. We want to keep this as simple as possible. When a coordinator doesn’t receive a reply to an email, the person doesn’t know if it’s because the recipient didn’t get the email or if there were perhaps difficulties responding. The coordinator is then left with the possibility of potential group members missing key information, meeting rooms perhaps being overcrowded or the need for the coordinator to do a follow-up call the people who have not responded to the email. Our coordinators are all volunteers who already give of themselves to assist the membership of our Club. We need to support them by ensuring that their emails to members do at least get a timely response. And if you’re not comfortable with replying by email, please feel free to phone the coordinator. Thank you for your understanding.
