The past month has been a month of celebrations. We first celebrated the one-year anniversary of our PROBUS club. Our “bragging rights” include 255 members, 11 guest speakers, 20 social events, and 22 interest groups in our first year. This was followed on June 30th by the 1867 Old Tyme Family Picnic. OUR SPEAKERSJuly’s Speaker

July 18th, 2017 - Barbara Martinez

Prescription Drugs: who is taking them, do they need them, and who can afford them?

Barbara Martinez, also known as “The Drug Lady” is an expert on drug spending in Canada. Her presentation will outline how Canadian drug spending has increased over time and provide a viewpoint on where spending is headed. Are we getting good value for the money spent on prescription drugs and is this spending sustainable? Will governments and employers be able to continue to afford to provide drug plans to employees and retirees? This presentation will address these questions and provide an outlook for the future.

August’s SpeakerAugust 15th, 2017 - Stewart Bennett

History of the Tartan

Stewart Bennett, the proprietor of The Wee Tartan Shop in Port Perry truly loves his Scotland.

But Stewart isn't just a proprietor, he knows his Scottish history. and organizes trips and tours to Britain. He's also a key member of a Scottish singing group called Claihmor and is a well-known entertainer. And he's a Scottish Country Dancer.

PROBUS INTEREST GROUPSWe’re looking for interest group coordinators. We’ve got a lot of interest particularly in the groups noted below that have not yet been started.

• Investment Group• Wine Tasting Group• Wine Making Group• Scotch/Whiskey/Beer Tasting Group• Cultural Event Group (movies, museums,

galleries, concerts)

We have also had some interest recently expressed in a men’s breakfast club.

So if you would like to participate in any of the above groups, please let Tim Casey know.

And if you would be prepared to coordinate or co-coordinate any of the above groups, please let Tim Casey know at [email protected] or 647-521-2565. Tim will help you contact the interested members, advertise the group to the membership and get the group going. You don’t have to be an expert in the area, only someone who has an interest in it and a willingness to help organize the group. All we need are some volunteers. This is a great way to meet new friends and support your fellow members at the same time. And it’s actually not that much work nor does it take much time.

A few of our interest groups already have coordinators from late last fall, but since the Snowbirds were just heading out at that time, the coordinators have been waiting until the bulk of the membership was back in town before starting up the groups. These groups are ready to go and just need a few more members to get the fun started. There’s some information on the groups in the updated material below. So contact the group coordinator or Tim Casey. The groups all set to start up are:

Poker - Norm Sanford  [email protected];  905-441-1490

Music Jam - Bill Walker [email protected];  905-985-9673

We have a lot of long-standing interest in getting a theatre interest group going in order to go to various theatrical shows locally in Durham and other nearby areas, in Toronto and perhaps farther afield (e.g. Niagara on the Lake, Stratford, Kingston, etc.) and to socialize at the same time. These are some of the most popular groups in other PROBUS clubs. Janet and Tim Casey are prepared to try to get the group underway, but we’ll need one or two co-coordinators to help out. So if you have an interest in seeing theatre productions and helping out with some organizing, please contact Tim at [email protected] or 647-521-2565.

One thing that’s great about our PROBUS interest groups is their flexibility. Some have largely the same people attend each meeting while others see some new faces at every meeting. Some groups suspend operations during the winter due to weather or Snowbirds heading out of town. Others see people attending more during the summer while at the same time some other group members head off to the cottage. Some go from a few members attending a session to many attending another session in the space of a month or two. There’s no required attendance for anyone. Group members attend as they wish, and we ask only that they RSVP to emails announcing the time and place so the coordinator can know how many people to expect at a meeting. You can join as many interest groups as you want, and most of them have no cost to participate. It’s fun, you meet new friends and you’ll definitely encounter new experiences. We’re looking forward to seeing you at some of our many interest groups this year.

ACTING FOR FUN - Barbara Faulkner

[email protected]

This recently formed group has about 6 members and has room for about 2 more. The group will be learning about acting and theatre productions in its meetings which are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month.

BEGINNERS BRIDGE - Judy Anderson

[email protected]; 905 985 8719

The beginners bridge group has spent the last several months learning the basics of this game based on the ACBL guidelines. Our group is made up of players who are new to the game and those returning after a few years who want to refresh themselves with the more current rules.

We get together on a weekly basis at various members’ homes. It's a fun and relaxed group, and we do a shuffle and play format now that the basics have been learned. There's always lots of discussion at the table especially when the hands are more unusual.

BOARD GAMES - Jenny Yorgason at [email protected]; 905-986-5441 and Bill Morrison at [email protected]; 905 439 0484.

The Board Games Group usually meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month. The group typically has four to six members at each session held in the home of one of the group members. Among the games played so far have been Sequence and Mexican Train, and even players new to board games have found it quite fun learning the new games.

BOOK CLUB - Suzanne Redford    [email protected]; 416 573 0597

The Book Club is going well.  There is room for some new members if anyone wants to join.  Give Suzanne Redford a call.

BREAKFAST CLUBS - Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected]; 905 986 4078 All Breakfast Clubs aim to have at least 6 members attend a breakfast once a month and enjoy pleasant conversation and company. The choice of restaurant will vary.

With the nicer weather here (sort of!), the Breakfast Club members are stretching their wings and traveling a little further to other area restaurants that are within a 40 minute drive from Port Perry. We tried 2 new great venues in the last 2 months - 1 in Uxbridge and 1 in Whitby.  Although both the Tuesday (4th Tuesday of the month) and the Thursday Breakfast Club (2nd Thursday) are currently full, anyone interested in joining could be put on a waiting list for the first available opening(s) or be invited to attend when attendance is lower than usual. Contact the Coordinator,  Mary-Anne Unwin at [email protected].

Members are requested that they record future meeting dates provided and RSVP to the email notice they are sent a few days prior to their next Breakfast meeting in order to provide accurate numbers for the reservation.

CARDS – HAND & FOOT

Hand and Foot is a card game similar to Canasta. It’s very easy to learn. New members typically catch on after playing only one hand. While it is a simple game, it has enough variety within it to keep it interesting. It’s also a game that can be played with 2 to 6 players. That allows the group to play quite frequently whether or not the entire group is available. There are some members who have shown up every week, but others

The Cards – Hand & Foot interest group is presently in the process of re-organizing. More information will be available about the group in the near future on the website and in future newsletters.

EUCHRE – AFTERNOON - Ann Berube [email protected]; 905 985 7102

The Afternoon Euchre Group now has Fourteen (14) lovely members, so each fortnight we expect to have two or three tables to play progressive euchre, win prizes and enjoy refreshments and socializing afterwards. This number is our limit for now, but we will be happy to take names for a waiting list or to play as Spares if other PROBUS members are interested.

EUCHRE – EVENING - Margaret Adamson [email protected]; 905 773 2878

With summer bringing new activities and things to do, our evening euchre group took a break for the month of June. However, we will resume meeting again in July.

Kathy and Bob McLeod will be hosting on July 18th. They will be sending out their address prior to this evening.

GOLF - Larry Inglis  [email protected]

I would like to remind people that I am filling in as Group Coordinator until Dave Matthews returns and that I am very appreciative of the co- operation I have received. At this point we have 10 people interested in golfing every other Thursday morning. We are golfing at Sunnybrae Golf Club. If anyone wants to join our group, they should contact me at:  [email protected].

GREY CELLS MATTER - Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected]; 905 986 4078

This group meets on the 2nd Monday of each month from 2 pm to 4 pm at a member's home. We enjoy tackling various types of word puzzles, riddles and quizzes in a non-competitive format.  New members are welcome. If you enjoy doing crosswords and other published puzzles, you would enjoy this Interest Group. There is a small fee to cover the cost of photocopying.

Answer to June's Sample Puzzle:   "NINE DAYS A WEEK": Can you name four days which start with the letter 'T'?  Answer: Tuesday, Thursday, Today and Tomorrow!

July Sample Puzzle:"THE THIRD CHILD":   David’s mother had three children. The first child was named April; the second child was named May. What was the third child’s name? Answer next month!GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER (GWCTD) - Carole Matthews [email protected]; 905 982 2702

The GWCTD group had a good turnout for our June dinner at Wolfgangs in Whitby.

We’ll be sending a group email for details of our next meeting, and it should be listed as well on the website calendar. We expect a lot of members to attend our dinners from now through the fall, and many restaurants in the area only have a limited amount of room, so when you get the notice of the dinner, please RSVP early. If we get more interest than the number of seats available, we do keep a wait list in the event of cancellations.

HEALTHY EATING - Suzanne Redford

[email protected]; 416 573 0597

The Healthy Eating Club will be touring the Lavender Farm in Greenbank on July 20th  at 2:30 PM, and this should be a very interesting tour.

HIKING - Bill Morrison   [email protected]; 905 439 0484

Our opportunities for outings have been expanded. The Whitby/Brooklin PROBUS Walking Group has invited us to join them on their walks each Monday morning.  This offers additional or alternative activity for our members. The Whitby walks are shorter than ours (1 hour versus our 2- 2.5 hour hikes) and are in urban settings, usually on the Lake Ontario waterfront, while our hikes are primarily held in rural, often forested, settings. Earlier in the winter we had also invited any interested Whitby/Brooklin members to join us on our hikes, so additional benefits are now available to members of both clubs.

MUSIC JAM - Bill Walker

 [email protected];  905-985-9673

The Music Jam Interest Group is still looking for a few more individuals who play instruments and would love to jam with some of their fellow PROBUS members.  They’d like to get a variety of instruments represented to make it really interesting. Please contact the coordinator, Bill Walker, at [email protected]  or  905-985-9673.

MUSIC – UKULELE - Andy Stevenson

[email protected];  905-449-0719

The PROBUS Ukulele ABC's (Absolute Beginner Class) have finished their fall 10-week training program and enjoyed a performance of their skills at the November PROBUS meeting. Some members are now

jamming with the DUKES, the Port Perry based Durham Ukulele Klub, also led by PROBUS member Andy Stevenson. Congratulations to everyone for your great achievements.

Andy is tied up at the present time but will review the situation again in several months.

OPEN STUDIO – ART - Margaret Adamson

[email protected];  905-773-2878

This group continues to be committed to having a designated time for working on their own art, while also having an opportunity to share with other people. There is plenty of room for new members.  Phil Wooding has volunteered to give some easy guided lessons. His gentle encouragement and skill as an accomplished acrylic painter can get anyone started.Don't worry about having the right supplies.  We'll help you figure out how to get going without spending a ton of money.
