47th Annual UW-Platteville Model Bridge Contest & Engineering, Mathematics, & Science Expo

On April 12th, approximately 20 students attended the Engineering Expo @ UW-Platteville. Students, who attended this event, ordered bridge kits and entered the Model Bridge Contest. Several schools in the area attended the Expo, & over 400 model bridges were tested. In the open division (junior high) of the bridge contest, several students from RMS did extremely well. According to preliminary results recently released, the following RMS students placed in the top ten: Connor K. placed 10th overall, Tyler B. placed 5th, Paige K. took 2nd place, and Logan S. took 1st place in the junior high division! Congrats to these individuals and the other participants!!!!

Justen C. wins this year’s Ice Cube Contest!! Once again the 8th grade science classes competed in their annual “Bring An Ice Cube To Class” contest. The basic concept behind the contest is to design a homemade device that will keep a standard-sized ice cube from melting the fastest. The ice cube can be the only H2O in the setup, and they may not use an electrical or battery-operated device. They are also banned from using coolers or ice packs. The size of their apparatus must be no larger than 50,000 cm3. The ice cubes are brought in to Room 110 at 8:00 a.m. and are checked every two hours until they are fully melted. Students that complete the activity earn a “C” grade (40 out of 50). If it survives until the 1st check at 9:00 a.m., it earns a “B” (45 out of 50). If it makes it to the 11:00 a.m.check, it’s an “A+” (50 out of 50). Every check thereafter earns then 2 additional extra credit points. The ultimate goal is to keep Mr. Lynch up all night, which has been accomplished a couple of times in the past, but not this year! Justen C. created a device that kept his ice cube frozen through 9:00 p.m. the day of the contest! It finally bit the dust by the 11:00 p.m. check. For his efforts, besides the extra credit he earned, he also received a homework coupon and a 2-liter bottle of pop (Diet Pepsi). Congratulations to Justen on a super idea! It was a lot of fun and a really good experience for those who participated.

Raider 8th Graders Compete at You Be The Chemist State Competition at UW-Madison Recently, three eighth-grade students from the Richland Middle School qualified for the state level competition by competing with 60 other students from southwest Wisconsin. That qualifying round was held in Fennimore back in February, and the three who qualified to move on were Aiden C., Brady J. and Jessica S. The state level competition took place on Saturday, April 14 and due to a schedule conflict, Jessica S. was unable to attend and compete. Aiden C. and Brady J. were able to compete and represented RMS very well! The competition involves elimination rounds, where the questions become more and more difficult with each round. Both boys hung in there until the final round, where only the top 4 remained. At that point Aiden was eliminated, and Brady was still in the hunt for top honors. In the final 4 round, Brady ended up tied for 2nd place, and ended up 3rd overall after losing the tiebreaker. Both boys received medallions for their efforts and Brady also received a very nice plaque for finishing 3rd overall in the state competition. Congratulations to all three qualifiers for their efforts! The original qualifier was a local test given here at RMS back in December. 48 eighth-graders took that test, and eight qualified and moved onto the regional competition in Fennimore in February. Those 8 qualifiers were: Daniel F., Alex P., Brady J., Aiden C., Savanna P., Kym P-M, Jessica S. and Ashton W. (Photos below).

Conference Math Contest On March 14th, nine Richland Middle School students represented our school at the conference math contest held at the Platteville High School. Our RMS math team was made up of 7th and 8th grade students who met after school, throughout February, to prepare for the annual Southwest Conference Math Competition. The contest is made up of four, 15-minute tests that cover a wide range of topics in mathematics. Individually, our gold medal winner was Maya B., Kim L., Megan M., Connor S., and Mirabella C. won silver medals. Bronze medal winners were Kaylee Jo L., Maicee E, Ellie F., and Amelia J.
