THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST JUNE 24, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR

My Dear Parishioners,

Praised be Jesus Christ! This weekend marks the start of my fourth year as Pastor here at St. Patrick. Where did the me go? It also marks the Week of Religious Freedom: the week between the Sts. Thomas More/John Fisher Feast Day and our July 4th Holiday.

In light of this, knowing how quickly me goes and the importance of our mes, I offer the following reflecon and ask: Namely, how’s religious freedom going? For sadly, our religious freedom connues to be challenged: Challenged by our own ignorance, challenged by our secular culture, challenged by those in power. And it’s worth our serious reflecon.

1) Combat Ignorance with knowledge. Know well what religious freedom is and is not. Religious Freedom is NOT a license to hurt or to hate. Rather it is the ability for people of good will to live and serve the Truth in love. Religious freedom protects the space in which people of various faiths can not only pracce religion but serve others in the world: in healthcare, child welfare, migraon and refugee reselement and educaon. And that space is being challenged today.

2) Challenged by the religion called Secularism. Case and Point, the City of Philadelphia and Catholic Social Services (CSS). I share now some quotes from an arcle by Kathleen Parker in the May 22nd WASHINGTON POST.

At a me when more than 400,000 children are in foster care naonwide, the city of Philadelphia is threatening to cut es with CSS because of the group’s policy again placing foster children in same-sex households. On the surface, one might say this is a classic case of state vs. church: the city must uphold its policies forbidding discriminaon on the basis of sexual orientaon. And CSS must honor Catholic teaching and not place children in LGBTQ households.

On a deeper level, however, the issue cuts right to the core of religious liberty. Although the First Amendment guarantee of religious freedom has always meant that the state couldn’t impose a religion upon its people, secularism would seem to qualify as a religion inasmuch as the state’s policies are really beliefs, arcles of faith based upon far less informaon and experience than the church’s There’s no dogma like no-dogma, if I may quote myself.

The ulmate aim of secularists, of course isn’t to place foster kids with gay couples but to banish God from the village square. Lest you celebrate too soon, remember: the state is a soulless, ruthless and insaable machine and its only purpose is to increase its power and subjugate its cizens for maximum efficiency. Every me religious liberty is put to the test freedom holds its breath.

In these mes, when “so many are holding their breath” in so many ways, let us breathe deeply the beauty of our faith, the Holy Spirit. And may His power fill us with the gis that ensure true freedom for all.

Peace,

Fr. Rogers

The Lile Sisters of the Poor sent a leer of gratude to us for your generosity in their recent collecon. You the peo-ple of St. Patrick donated $4,161.00 to the good work of the Lile Sisters and they now keep you in their prayers.

Religious Freedom Week-We are called to follow Christ as missionary disciples by serving others and living our faith. Let us take a few moments each day from June 22-29 to pray, reflect, and take acon on religious liberty, both here in this country and abroad. 236

Seminarian Says

Queson of the Week

Who is your favorite Saint(s)?

Answer: This is actually a really difficult ques-on! I am inspired by a lot of saints and I go through periods of devoon to parcular ones. Right now, I am very inspired by the life of Saint Padre Pio. I think he is a tremendous model for holiness because he followed God’s plan with hu-mility and courage. Saint John Paul II is also an-other one of my favorites. He had a tremendous presence about him due to his very complex and deep relaonship with Jesus. He was known to spend an hour in every Church or Chapel he passed by. His Secret Service chauffeurs would try to find ways to avoid driving past Churches in Rome because if Saint John Paul II saw one, he would make them stop the car so he could get out and spend me in front of our Lord. That is the type of relaonship with Jesus I aspire too as well. Another one of my favorite Saints is Saint Martha. In Luke 10: 38-42, Martha is burdened by a lot of serving in her house while her sister Mary is re-clined at the table with Jesus and the disciples. Martha is frustrated by Mary not helping and asks Jesus to send her to aid her. Jesus says to Martha “You are anxious about many things… Mary has chosen the beer part and it will not be taken from her.” Can you imagine how Martha would have felt? I personally resonate with her because of her immense desire to serve others, but also in dealing with frustraon somemes. I think she is a good example to all of us in our daily lives; somemes we need to drop what we are doing to spend me with our Lord. 236

Guide Book & Directory Adversing Opportunity

We are in the process of updang our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain every thing pernent to our church: the various ministries, organiza-ons, commiees, acvies, funcons and events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being pro-vided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that adverse. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about adversing in our book, please call the Parish Office at 610-444-4364.

Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory adverser over a non-adverser. It “will pay” to adverse in our new Guide Book & Directory.
