Conspiracies between experts?

Exploitation:

• From research

prototype to

successful products

• CRIS conspiracy

between the experts,

is it a myth or reality? Search and find

Apply new technologies!

• In the name of progress,

our official culture is

striving to force the new

media to do the work of

the old

(Marshal MCLuhan,

1911-1980)

From technology to innovation

• Father Leopold Verhagen, Dutch priest, who under-stood how to use new technology and who was in the fifties a famous TV presenter

• His innovation was, not to use the TV as a radio but explore a new way of communication

From innovation to wealth creation

• More invention comes from borrowing and combining than from simple innovation

• „I invented nothing new“, said Henry Ford, „I simply assembled into a car the discoveries of other men behind whom were centuries of work“

Innovation today

• Innovation means observing customers to discover what they want, then satisfying them with new products

• iPod: Existing technology from mainly 3rd party providers

...and more

• Due to the nanotechnology,

a small unit

• But the consumer is part of

the Innovation Added Value

Chain by demanding this

product also in red and in

black

One stop shop to European science

Provide the single gate-way „one stop shop“ to European science, the complexity of the Euro-pean Science and Techno-logy landscape, is not always easy to under-stand for third countries when it comes to seeking cooperation with Europe

Promote transfer of knowledge

• Encourage the reform of public resesarch centres and universities to promote the transfer of knowledge

• Share information on new ways of raising funds for R&D purposes

Utilisation of knowledge

• Leiden university is striving for more and better

utilisation of its knowledge.

• Scientists and entrepreneurs should develop and

exchange knowledge.

• The aim is identifying scientific and commercial

product marketing combination, that can

stimulate business development and growth

Decrease of public budgets

• Decreasing public budgets and the relatively weak position of Leiden in the acquisition of competitive budgets from research councils as well as in acquiring were in 1995 the reason for developing and executing an innovation policy plan at Leiden university

• In 2005, Leiden university retained Dr. Bob Smailes from Endinburgh university as the director of research and innovation services

Shift of Paradigm

• An old philosophical dispute:– Kant vs. Hegel– Platon vs. Heraklit

• Heraklits core message:– Everything is in flow, nothing is

fix – No-one can step twice into the

same river • Practical examples:

– Static vs. Dynamic modelling– Euler vs. Lagrange

• Discipline orientation vs. Knowledge flow orientation

Shift of Paradigm

Old research world

• Knowledge is „a

material thing“

• Discipline oriented

• Research disciplines

• Production oriented

• Top down control of

the hierarchy

New research world

• Knowledge is like „a

liquidity“

• Knowledge flow

oriented

• Research process

• Consumer oriented

• Self control of the

process quality

Impact of CERIF

• CERIF drives:

– Process and quality orientation

– Partner orientation

in research + innovation

Page 15: © uniCRIS AG euroCRIS Meeting Bruxelles 2005 1 Presentation euroCRIS uniCRIS Open Acces to Wealth Creation Jan Poort Rolf Steinmann

Process orientation

• CERIF enables information flow from research to innovation

• CERIF optimizes resource allocation along the Innovation Added Value Chain

• To streamline the process from research prototype to successful products requires CERIF and change management

Page 16: © uniCRIS AG euroCRIS Meeting Bruxelles 2005 1 Presentation euroCRIS uniCRIS Open Acces to Wealth Creation Jan Poort Rolf Steinmann

Partner orientation

• Know and understand the

needs of the partners to

enable the knowledge flow

along the Innovation Added

Value Chain

• Need to define interfaces

and SLA‘s (service level

agree-ments), where CERIF is

a key source

• The conspiracy between ex-

perts is a (hidden) reality
