In 1967, Israel occupied the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, theWest Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from-Syria.[17] Israel annexed East Jerusalem[18] and the Golan Heights.[19] These areas are not internation-ally-recognised as being part of Israel.[4] Between 1982 and 2000, Israel occupied part of southern Lebanon, in what was known as theSecurity Zone.[20] Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt as part of theIsrael–Egypt Peace Treaty.[21] Israel no longer has a permanent civil-ian or military presence in the Gaza Strip, following its unilateral disengagement, but is still considered the occupying power under international law.[22][23][24][25][26] Is-rael is not recognised as a state by 32 UN members (including most Arab states) and by the SADR.
