The main aim of this course is to provide students with an introductory yet comprehensive overview of The concept of sustainable development and its application with emphasis on the methods and processes to achieve sustainability goals. After the understanding of general concept, it will be discussed in the context of TOURISM sector/industry. The main aim is to provide the students of tourism with a practical alternative to develop, plan, and mange tourism sector. Sustainable tourism has become a newly developed GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING of: 1. Sustainable land use systems, 2. Nature and meaning of the sustainability, 3. Mechanisms for sustainability? 4. Island states and their socio-economic characters 5. Community involvement as principle not rhetoric. On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed their SKILLS by: 6. Solving case studies by designing policies and plans to achieve sustainability. 7. Turning theory into practice through application of methods and decisions for utilization of the resources. LEARNING / TEACHING METHODBesides the regular lecture process, various external articles will be presented to the students to read and reflect upon. Visual presentations of various cases will be furnished from different parts of the world and ecosystems.

New development and innovations regarding the sustainability issues and impacts will be part of the learning process. The cases of island states will be emphasized. Students will be given a task of reporting from cases with associated with resource depletion. Constant feedback will be provided on how and in what ways students can relate.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENTStudents have to undertake the following forms of assessment: Mid-term exam: 30% Weekly assignment: 10% Final Examination: 30% Major Project: 10% Group work/discussion: 10% Presentation and participation: 10%

ATTENDANCEAttendance is compulsory and if absenteeism exceeds by more than 20% of the total lecture hours, students will jeopardize their grades. Students with no attendance, no interest and no data will be graded NG.
