City of Ballarat Community Safety AwardsIncluding the Community Safety Prize

Nomination FormNominations for the 2017 City of Ballarat Community Safety Awards are now open and close Friday 1 September, 2017. Please read the entry terms and conditions before completing your nomination.

The City of Ballarat Community Safety Awards are presented as part of ‘Community Safety Month’ and aim to publicly acknowledge the great work and initiatives of individuals, groups and organisations who have made a significant contribution to safety in the local community.

As part of the Community Safety Awards, the City of Ballarat Community Safety Advisory Committee will provide a $1000 prize to the individual, group or organisation judged to be most successful at improving community safety. The City of Ballarat Community Safety Prize is provided to assist with further implementation and development of the nominated project.

The award categories are:

Improving Community Safety Urban Design for Safe & Healthy Environments Preventing Crime

Nominations will be considered that focus on:

Reduction of crime Injury prevention Promoting positive perceptions of safety Community building Active citizenship and participation

The ‘Ballarat, a safe city’ Community Safety Advisory Committee will review nominations and select recipients. Each application will be assessed on four key areas:

1. Originality and appropriateness to the target audience2. The project/individual has identified causes of, and found solutions for, a community

safety issue3. The project or work of the individual has identifiable safety outcomes for the

community4. Use of a partnership approach by the individual/organisation to address safety issues

Section 1Nomination Category

Improving Community Safety

A project or program that:

Supports social cohesion through the arts, physical activity or other community activities.

Increases opportunities for social connection within neighbourhoods. Strengthens volunteering opportunities and identifies barriers to volunteering. Build resilience by helping communities ‘bounce back’ after adversity. Encourages community use of public spaces.

Urban Design for Safe and Healthy Environments

A project or program that creates built and natural environments by:

Incorporating safer and healthy by design principles, including Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).

Promoting health and wellbeing. Having a high standard of amenity and safety. Welcoming places, creating well utilised by a diverse mix of community

members.

Preventing Crime

A project or program that:

Seeks to prevent harm before it occurs. Can be delivered to the whole population or to particular groups that are at

higher risk of becoming involved in crime or at risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Prevention strategies can focus on changing behaviour and/or building the knowledge and skills of individuals.

Provides education or raises awareness about the underlying causes of behaviour and seeks to improve community confidence and perceptions of safety.

Aligns with the City of Ballarat Community Safety Strategic Plan 2014-2017 priority areas: alcohol and other drug related issues, CBD public safety, neighbourhood safety and preventing violence against women.

Privacy and Confidentiality

Information provided on this form will be used for the assessment process.

Information about the nominee provided in the nomination form will be used for the purposes of assessment and judging process and award announcements, including promotion of the awards and Community Safety Month. This may include publishing details on the City of Ballarat website, social media, in media releases announcing nominees and recipients of the awards, or any other promotional material.

The information provided on the nomination form is collected by the City of Ballarat and may be made available to the judging panel.

Any personal information provided in the nomination form is protected under the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014. It will not be used for any other purpose, or be disclosed to any other person or organisation without consent.

Section 6Terms and ConditionsGeneral

Entry is open to all organisations or individuals living, working, volunteering or studying in the City of Ballarat Local Government Area.

Nominations should be made on the original nomination form located on the City of Ballarat website www.ballarat.vic.gov.au or available from City of Ballarat Customer Service Centre, The Phoenix, 25 Armstrong Street South, Ballarat.

Completed applications can be submitted online to [email protected] or mailed to: ‘Ballarat, a safe city’ Community Safety Awards, Attention: Community Safety, City of Ballarat, PO Box 655, Ballarat 3353.

All entries must be received by Friday 1 September 2017.

The City of Ballarat takes no responsibility for late, lost or misdirected entries or for any expenses personal or otherwise of any nominee or nominator.

Entry is conditional upon acceptance of nominations by the ‘Ballarat, a safe city’ Community Safety Committee. Winners will be selected by the ‘Ballarat, a safe city’ Community Safety Committee. Judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Nominees must agree to undertake all the media and promotional activities as directed by City of Ballarat and must agree to the reproduction, in full or part, of the supporting statement of the nominator/nomination for the purpose of

promoting these awards.

Council will contact all nominees and nominators to confirm the nomination, eligibility and advise the details of the award ceremony.

Winners will be announced in October.

Community Safety Prize

All eligible nominations will go into the running for the ‘Community Safety Prize.’

City of Ballarat and State Government project are ineligible for the ‘Community

Safety Prize.’

The ‘Community Safety Prize’ will be judged on the criteria identified on page one

of this document.

The ‘Community Safety Prize’ of $1000 will be provided on the basis that it is to be

used to assist with further implementation and development of the nominated

project.
