Good Monday Morning to you, November 28 th , 2016--- I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends and are ready for the final few weeks of the Fall 2016 semester. In these last weeks of the semester we will be seeking to enhance our enrollment for the Winter session and for the Spring 2017 semester. For the 2017 Winter session, we have introduced the Commit 2 Complete campaign. If a student commits to take an English or Math course accompanied with additional instructional support that includes workshops, tutoring, and counseling this Winter, and enrolls in at least 9 units for the Spring, LATTC will commit to free parking permits, free book loans and well-targeted student support. This new program was launched with students who took the Math and/or English assessment and did not enroll in an English or Math class in Fall 2016. We need your help to publicize this opportunity campus-wide by encouraging students to join in the campaign, and to take on the challenge of completing an English or Math course this Winter session. While our Commit to Complete campaign will be our biggest effort targeting one of our greatest needs, we will also be marketing other pathway opportunities this week in addition to our significant Winter 2017 “in-reach” campaign focusing on continuing students. I am asking you to ask every student that you come into contact with whether they have yet enrolled for the Winter and for the Spring and mention this effort. These efforts will work best if we are all in it together. The Commit to Complete campaign is our college’s pledge to continuing students that we will provide the support necessary to ensure their certificate, degree, or transfer attainment. We are also creating expanded opportunities focusing on non- credit courses outreaching to our surrounding communities. We will keep you posted on these opportunities as well.

Good Monday Morning to you, November 28th, 2016---

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends and are ready for the final few weeks of the Fall 2016 semester.

We are also creating expanded opportunities focusing on non-credit courses outreaching to our surrounding communities. We will keep you posted on these opportunities as well.

We have always been a college of opportunity, not only in our courses and training, but in our ability to connect students with area employers. We actually have three job fairs coming up this week.

A significant number of our students are carrying full-time jobs while attending LATTC. So the ASO, Paralegal Club, LATTC Work Source Center and the Dolores Huerta Labor Institute have joined forces to present a Workers’ Rights Fair in the Work Source Center this Tuesday at 9:00am. We hope that students who are already working in various industries come out and learn about their rights and what the law states about their employment and working conditions. We want students to ask questions and to talk about their on-the-job situations.

On Friday, we’re hosting a Re-Entry Job Fair in conjunction with our Work Source Center and the City of Los Angeles. It was actually borne out of the partnership we have with the Coalition for Responsible Community Development and some of the previous outreach efforts to the re-entry population. The idea is to bring employers to campus and have them engage with the re-entry student population so we can connect them both with opportunities. Please inform students that this job and resource fair will be taking place this Friday, December 2nd under the tents, starting at 9:00am. Mayor Garcetti and the City have pledged efforts to connect the formerly incarcerated with real careers; and the federal government is also looking for successful strategies in this area of job placement. It is not surprising that LATTC and its partners are leading the way with efforts such as this Friday’s job fair.

Also on Friday, December 2nd, the MultiCultural Food Service and Hospitality Alliance is holding its Showcase of the Stars at LATTC for the second time. This is a nationwide organization that showcases culinary careers and job trends in various communities. The presentation will include well-known speakers from various culinary industries and outlets, talking with attendees about their careers and career strategies. We certainly encourage all of our culinary students to attend the event, but everyone is welcome. It takes place at 9:30am in the Magnolia Hall Atrium.

Last week, we had several events organized by and featuring our students.

Last Monday, our ASO, with the help of LACCD Trustee Sydney Kamlager-Dove, put together an Election Reflection 2016 event outside Cedar Hall. It has been a time of uncertainty for some of our students following the presidential election and it is important that our students feel safe in expressing their views and, in some cases, their fears about the future. Not only did students get on the microphone and share their insights with each other, but they developed a wall where LATTC students and staff were able to write their comments and place them on the wall at the event. The post-it notes are now in the ASO’s temporary space in Cedar Hall K-126 if you want to take a look. Thanks to Trustee Kamlager-Dove, Dean Dimitrios Synodinos and the ASO for creating this opportunity for expression.

This past Wednesday, students from our Design & Media Arts pathway organized a Native American Heritage event during Native American Heritage Month. The students brought out Native American dancers who had attendees join in a friendship dance. One of the key performers and organizers is a student in the DMA Fashion program. Congratulations to our students and those who attended. Click on the link to view video of the event.

Every once in a while you learn of a faculty, staff, or student effort that happened a while ago, and got by you. In August, Culinary Arts faculty member Luis Robles presented his research at the MAD Symposium (MAD is the Danish word for food) in Copenhagen. The conference was started by Rene Redzepi, who is a chef at one of the world’s best restaurants, NOMA, which is also in Copenhagen. This conference is considered the TED Talks of Food, where the foremost chefs, journalists, food activists, farmers and environmentalists gather for two days to discuss ideas in food. The theme of this year’s symposium was "Tomorrows Kitchen." Chef Robles’ Senior Thesis for his Masters was entitled “The Social Structure of Kitchens: A Qualitative Study.” One gathers from a number of reality cooking shows that an abusive environment can be common in restaurants, and the research focused on the social structures which legitimize and perpetuate this atmosphere. Chef Robles was invited to present his findings to some of the most influential practitioners and critics in the industry to great interest. He also made great contacts for himself and for Trade Tech. Thank you, Chef Robles, for putting LATTC on the global stage with another industry group.

NOTE: In keeping with prior years, we are encouraging most staff and administrators to take vacation on the six non-holiday days from December 19th until January 3rd. We will be keeping the Bridges to Success Center and the Bookstore open from Monday, December 19th through Thursday, December 22nd, to facilitate our “Commit 2 Complete” effort. If you are unable to take your vacation during that first week, you will likely be supporting the college’s efforts in Bridges or the Bookstore. The only non-holiday days the following week are December 27th and 28th. If you are unable to take those days off, you will be stationed in Facilities, the only staff on campus that week, so that we are able to conduct our energy saving efforts throughout the college.

We are down to the home stretch of this semester and we are focused on our Commit 2 Complete campaign. This could be a game changer for some of our students. I am looking to all of you to help support its success and the success of our students every single day.

To another solid week at LATTC.
