INTERNATIONAL YOUNG FOOD AND NUTRITION LEADERSHIP (iYouLead)TRAINING AND WORKSHOP

“Strengthening Youth Capacity for Future Global Leadership on Nutrition, Food and Health“

Bogor, Bandung, Jakarta and Yogyakarta of Indonesia August, 11th-17th 2014

1. BACKGROUND

The challenges facing by the global community today are not just problems of under nutrition but also over nutrition, which is called double burden of nutrition. This problems are not merely among the lower socio-economic group but also among the upper middle socio-economic group. According to WHO (2011), 26%, 16% and 7% of children under 5 years suffered from stunting, underweight and obesity respectively. They are mostly live in Asian and African countries. While in American and European countries the prevalence of overweight and obesity is more than 50%, which was double during the last decade. A similar figure also among the high income group. This double burden of nutrition will effect on increasing risk of both non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and infectious diseases, and lower productivity and quality of life. Currently, as much as 63% of deaths caused by NCDs. Every year there are nearly 9 million people die caused by NCDs. NCDs are preventable through better diet and lifestyle; they should be prevented to minimize the negative impacts.

In addition, climate change such as global warming is also the challenge. Climate change affects agricultural productivity that result in decreased food availability and safety, which lead to increase food prices and decrease food quality. Climate change also affects the environmental conditions such as poor water quality and sanitation, which is related to the of infectious diseases. Both low food availability and poor environmental condition will negatively effect on quality and quantity of food intake.

These above problems should be eliminated through applying both nutrition innovations and other innovations needed for prevention, promotion, and medication of the problems. For this purpose, the government should formulate related policies, and design appropriate programs in sustainable manner which benefit to society in terms of social, economic, and environment (holistic approach). In the implementation of the programs, Not only government responsible for the problems of food, nutrition and health facing today, but also all of societies, especially the educated young generation as the agent of change and possibly the future leaders.

The educated young generation of food, nutrition and health, as iron stock for future leaders, are expected to contribute creative and innovative ideas and thoughts to solve the global problems of food, nutrition and health. Furthermore, they should contribute and participate in the community activities. Regional and

international collaboration is needed to build networks and knowledge sharing among the educated young generation. Therefore, they are expected to become a problem solver in the community. For the first time, last year (June 2013) in Bogor, 80 young nutritionists, food scientists and medical doctors were trained to be Indonesian Young Food and Nutrition Leaders called DoYouLead under the auspice of the Food and Nutrition Society of Indonesia (PERGIZI PANGAN Indonesia).
