➢ AdmissionAdmission to the GUHSD Online Learning Academy is open to all students aged fourteen through twenty-one with documentation of eighth grade completion. Every attempt will be made to accommodate students seeking admission. However, due to the capacity of the school, the Online Learning Academy has limited seating in the morning and afternoon sessions. When that limit is met, the prospective student will be placed on a waiting list based on the student’s pre-enrollment date.

Admission to Glendale Union Online is open to students aged fourteen through twenty-one with documentation of eighth grade completion. Given the nature of working from home the following criteria should be met by prospective students:

❏ Student needs to be able to comprehend material written at a 10th grade reading level. Comprehension of fiction, non-fiction, and historical &/or scientific documents is required. The content is all delivered via computer text instead of videos.

❏ Students who are most successful with online curriculum are reading at or near grade level and do not rely on in person interactions or video to assist with comprehension.

❏ Completed 8th grade Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards or an equivalent of those standards from other states.

❏ Completed GUHSD Math Placement test that demonstrates the student’s readiness for Algebra 1 (This is the beginning high school math course offered.) Readiness is based on a variety of factors that may include scores, previous math exposure, and student growth patterns.

❏ Student/parent/educational team members understand that courses require the students to be able to write thoughtful, self-developed, original essays.

❏ Student can independently complete work, has sufficient study skills, and has sufficient time-management skills to meet deadlines.

❏ Student/parent/educational team members understand that:❏ Curriculum has the ability to allow students to accelerate through courses of study at a pace

that is suited to the motivational learner. ❏ Most of the English courses require the student to read multiple texts and a minimum of one

novel in a semester course. Parents/students/educational teams need to consider a student’s focus and stamina for reading multiple text during the same semester while maintaining comprehension and purpose of each text.

❏ The Science classes do require students to conduct experiments on their own using common household items. Math skills required for the science classes tend to be higher than those of the traditional classroom.

➢ Attendance and PunctualityThe right and privilege of attending public schools carries with it certain responsibilities on the part of both parents and students. Parents and students must recognize the direct relationship which exists between academic success and regular, punctual school attendance. High school attendance and punctuality is ultimately the responsibility of the student and the student’s family. Students should miss school only when absolutely necessary. Tardiness disrupts the learning environment of everyone in the class. Regular attendance and punctuality are the keys to much of the success a student may gain from the student’s high school program.

➢ Attendance PolicyAll lab students are required to attend school daily. All absences are to be phoned into the attendance line at 623.435.7306 the day of the absence. If a student reaches more than 12 absences in a semester and is not making adequate progress, he/she may be dropped from courses and withdrawn from school. An excused absence requires the student to bring in appropriate documentation. Reasonable attempts will be made by the school via phone, email, or US mail to inform parents/guardians of an absence. The District and Board employees or agents are not liable for failure to notify.

Recognized religious holidays are not subject to the 12-day absence limit, but they require parents/guardians to notify the administration 24 hours in advance. Additionally, absences due to school-sponsored activities are not subject to the 12-day absence limit.

➢ Tardy PolicyStudents not at the correct work station, and prepared to work, at the beginning of the session will be counted as tardy. Tardies are viewed as a disruption to the classroom environment. Coming in late not only deprives the tardy student of full learning time, but also disrupts the education of other students. Tardies caused by appointments for medical or legal reasons will be excused only if appropriate documentation is provided by the parent/guardian to the office upon return to school. Students who arrive over

Online Learning Academy- Lab Students

15 minutes late to a session will not be admitted into the lab and will be marked absent. Multiple tardies will result in disciplinary action with students being required to attend an additional lab session, detention and/or suspension. The school reserves the right to determine whether or not a student is tardy.

➢A

ttendance PolicyAll Glendale Union Online at-home students are not required to physically attend school. The exceptions are final exams and state required exams. Arrangements will be made for students residing outside the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan area for finals to be proctored. Attendance is determined by logging into the online system as well as a weekly parent/guardian attendance verification survey. Parents/Guardians will be sent a weekly email with a link to provide attendance information. Students are expected to work 30 hours/week. Any at home student who does not login for over 2 weeks may be withdrawn. Parents/Guardians must submit attendance verification. Failure to do so for 2 weeks or more will result in the student being withdrawn.

➢Email CommunicationGiven the nature of the online program, it is essential that all parents/guardians have an email account and regularly check it for messages from the school and/or teachers. If any parent/guardian needs assistance with setting up an email account, please notify the school office, and we will be happy to assist with email set-up. All students are provided with a district email account that is to be used for school purposes only. The primary method of communication between the school and home is through email. However, parents may request a conference with the teachers or guidance counselor at any time.

➢ Change of address/email address/phone numberPlease call the school 623.435.7300 with any changes in your address, email address, and/or phone number. It is extremely important that these are accurate and updated. If our records are not accurate, then our communication with you is not dependable. ➢ Uninterrupted Instructional TimeWe believe in providing uninterrupted learning time. Class sessions are a period of time when the student can concentrate on academics and not be distracted. If you have messages or materials for a student, please bring it to the school office, and the school personnel will deliver it to the classroom. PLEASE DO NOT CALL OR TEXT your student during their session as students are not allowed to use their phones during the session. If there is an emergency, please call the front office receptionist at 623.435.7300, and school personnel will make sure your student gets the message or transfer the call to a school phone where the student can take the call.

➢ Electronic DevicesStudents have the privilege of carrying electronic devices on campus. With that privilege comes the responsibility of ensuring that those items are not an educational disruption.

Communication

Glendale Union Online- At-home Students

If an electronic device makes a noise, vibrates, or otherwise calls attention to the student, the device is causing a disruption. These items must be silent and kept out of sight. Students are not to text, watch movies, make calls and/or surf the Internet while in school. Misuse of electronic devices may result in disciplinary action.

Students who bring an electronic device on campus do so at their own risk. GUHSD assumes no liability for the loss, theft, or damage of any personally owned electronic device on campus. The use of personally owned electronic devices on campus will not be allowed to interfere with the learning process of any student or with the instructional process of a teacher while in the classroom or on campus. Any such interference will be considered a disruption.

➢ Avoid PlagiarismPlagiarism is addressed in several of the courses; however, it is important to note under student expectations as well because all students are expected to complete their own work. Plagiarism is defined as the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language, thoughts, or writings of another author (or student). Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, cutting and pasting from any source, borrowing information without citing the original source, copying another student’s assignments, or using another student’s answers as your own. Due to the individualized nature of our program, students are expected to work independently on all quizzes, tests, worksheets, study guides, projects, essays, etc. that are assigned in the course. Any student found plagiarizing work for a course or assisting another student in plagiarizing will be subject to failing grades for the plagiarized assignments and may be dropped from the course and/or program.

➢ Final ExamsStudents must have an overall course grade of 60% or better to be eligible to take the final exam. Students must pass final exams with a 60% or better to receive credit for the course regardless of the overall course grade. Only students who fail the final exam will be given one retake. Students who fail the final exam twice will receive an F in the class regardless of the overall course grade. Once the final exam is taken, no other coursework will be accepted.

➢ Final Exam Schedule7:30-9:30 AM: Morning Online Learning Academy students12:00 -2:00 PM: Afternoon Online Learning Academy students9:30-11:30 AM or 2:00-4:00 PM: Glendale Union Online at-home studentsNote: Seniors graduating in December will have early final exam dates in December. Seniors graduating in May will have early final exam dates in May. Please see school calendar.

Academic Expectations for Students

➢ Course Completion Students are expected to complete a minimum of 3 classes per 9-week period. If students do not complete a minimum of 6 courses per semester, they will fall behind and jeopardize their graduation date. Upon course completion, a final grade will be posted on the transcript. Failure to demonstrate sufficient academic achievement may result in withdrawal in accordance with ASRS 15-808-G.

➢ State TestingAll GUHSD Online Learning Academy and Glendale Union Online students must participate in state mandated testing in accordance with ASRS 15-808-B.

Students will use their student identification card to enter the lab and sign-in. Any GUHSD staff member may ask for a student’s identification card at any time. Failure to produce the requested identification card may result in the student’s removal from campus or the activity, and the student may be subject to further disciplinary action. If a student loses their identification card, a replacement card can be purchased for $5.00 at the front office.

➢ Learning EnvironmentThe following are the general expectations for the purpose of maintaining an academic learning environment at the Online Learning Academy:

▪ Arrive on time▪ Respect everything and everyone▪ Maintain on-task behavior

Please note that food and drinks are not allowed in the labs. Students should eat before or after school. Students may bring water in a closed container (has a lid to prevent spills) into the lab. No other drinks are permitted.

Make sure your language is appropriate, and the tone of your writing is respectful. Failure to do so may result in withdrawal from the course.

➢ Extended Absence/VacationsAt times students are unable to participate in distance learning courses due to medical reasons or family circumstances. If a student will be inactive for more than one week due to an extended absence or vacation, it is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to call the Online Learning Academy main office at 623-435-7300, and it is the student’s responsibility to email the online teacher through the messaging system/email to let him/her know about the absence.

➢ Technology Use GuidelinesThe use of the school’s electronic resources and networks is a privilege, not a right and inappropriate use will result in a loss of those privileges. The use of the assigned account and the network must be in support of education and research within the educational goals and objectives of the GUHSD. The Internet contains materials that are controversial and/or not appropriate for students. The district has taken precautions to restrict access to these types of materials by teaching students about responsible use and by using filtering software to block student access to inappropriate materials. Student misuse of the network can come in many forms, but it is commonly viewed as sending or receiving materials that indicate or suggest pornography, unethical or illegal solicitation, racism,

Student Expectations and Responsibilities

sexism, inappropriate language and/or any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data of another user or of other agencies or networks that are connected to the system. This includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses. All rules of conduct described in the Student Handbook apply when utilizing the network or when accessing any district information, sites, or email addresses. Websites created outside of the district or local school website may not be linked to the district or school website without permission from the district or local administration. The administration may assign disciplinary consequences for violation of the technology user agreement. Additionally, the administration, staff, or faculty may request that the system administrator deny, revoke, or suspend specific user accounts.

➢ Bus TransportationStudents are responsible for transportation to and from the school. The GUHSD Online Learning Academy has a Valley Metro bus pass exchange program. Students must purchase the first week of bus passes. Each Friday students may turn in the used passes for the days they were PRESENT at school for new passes for the next week. As long as students attend school daily, their only cost is for the first week’s passes (approx. $10). Bus passes will not be exchanged if used on a day the student has been absent. For more information on routes and schedules, a Valley Metro bus book is available in the front office or you can call Valley Metro to get route information at 602-253-5000.

➢ Student VehiclesStudents will register their vehicles if they intend to drive to school. Students who fail to register their vehicles or who fail to follow school policy and procedures related to the use of student vehicles may have their vehicles towed away. Any expense related to such towing will be the responsibility of the student.

Students are permitted to park on the school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. The school retains authority to conduct routine patrols of student parking lots and inspections of the exteriors of student vehicles on school property. The interiors of student vehicles may be inspected whenever a school authority has reason to believe that illegal or unauthorized materials may be contained inside. Such patrols and inspections may be conducted without notice, without student consent, and without a search warrant.

If a properly conducted search yields illegal or contraband materials, such findings shall be turned over to the proper legal authorities for ultimate disposition.

Transportation

Teachers communicate with students using the message box/email system within the program.

▪ Communication with StudentsMany of the online program teachers not only teach online, but they are also classroom teachers during the day. The most reliable form of communication with teachers is through the message box/email system. Teachers check their messages several times throughout the day Monday through Friday, and then at least once a day on the weekends. Parents may also email teachers if they have questions or concerns about their students. Messages/emails should be returned within 24 hours on school days.

▪ Feedback on AssignmentsAssignments will receive feedback in a variety of ways: a link to an answer key, comments on the assignment; comments in the messaging system; or a grade. If you have questions about your grade, message your teacher for further information. Student work should be graded within 48 hours on school days.

For a complete listing of rules and policies, please refer to the GUHSD Parent/Student Handbook located at online.guhsdaz.org or you may request a copy at the front office.
