June 3, 2018 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ My dear Parishioners, This Sunday we celebrate the Presence of Jesus among us in the “Breaking of the Bread”. Jesus, who rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, promised to remain with us always. He has fulfilled His promise in a powerful way. Perhaps someone has said to you from time to time, “I’m with you” meaning that they are thinking of you or praying for you or that they share you pain, etc. The promise of Jesus “to remain” among us was not merely a good wish or moral support. He fulfilled his promise on the night before He died by instituting the Holy Eucharist, the sacrificial banquet in which the Lamb of God is sacrificed and given to his disciples to eat. When Jesus spoke of this mystery during his public ministry not everyone accepted it. Jesus taught them with great love, “ I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” (John 6:51) As the gospel records, they said in response to Jesus, “ This saying is hard; who can accept it? ” Sadly, they could not believe Him. “ As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him . ” (John 6:66) Catholic faith in the Holy Eucharist is Scriptural. To refuse to believe that the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Jesus is to reject the teaching of Jesus. So Jesus turned to his Twelve Apostles and asked them point blank, Do you also want to leave? The response of St. Peter to that question of Jesus was an affirmation of faith in the power of Jesus to institute the sacrament of his Love, his Body and Blood given to us as food for our souls. Peter said, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life .” (John 6:68) The Apostles, who believed what Jesus taught, became his priests and handed down what Jesus commanded them the night before He died – “ Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me. ” (Luke 22:19) You will not find a greater love than that which radiates from the Holy Eucharist at Mass and from our tabernacle. The God-man has seen to it that we have the privilege to be near Him, even to receive Him as food for our souls (not our stomachs)! Please find time in your busy schedules to visit the church and to adore Jesus present among us in the Holy Eucharist. Come let us adore Him, Fr. My dear Parishioners,This Sunday we celebrate the Presence of Jesus

among us in the “Breaking of the Bread”.

Jesus taught them with great love, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” (John 6:51)

As the gospel records, they said in response to Jesus, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Sadly, they could not believe Him. “As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.” (John 6:66)

Catholic faith in the Holy Eucharist is Scriptural. To refuse to believe that the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Jesus is to reject the teaching of Jesus. So Jesus turned to his Twelve Apostles and asked them point blank, “Do you also want to leave?”

The response of St. Peter to that question of Jesus was an affirmation of faith in the power of Jesus to institute the sacrament of his Love, his Body and Blood given to us as food for our souls. Peter said, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68) The Apostles, who believed what Jesus taught, became his priests and handed down what Jesus commanded them the night before He died – “Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” (Luke 22:19)

You will not find a greater love than that which radiates from the Holy Eucharist at Mass and from our tabernacle. The God-man has seen to it that we have the privilege to be near Him, even to receive Him as food for our souls (not our stomachs)! Please find time in your busy schedules to visit the church and to adore Jesus present among us in the Holy Eucharist.

Come let us adore Him, Fr. Martin Flum

ALTAR SERVERS & LECTORS & ROSARY LEADERSWe need you! We need adult Lectors and Rosary leaders. We are in need of Altar Servers, too! Children must be at grade 4 and have received their First Holy Communion to become an altar server. Anyone who is interested, please call the office.

OUR PARISH DINNERWow, what an effort! Thank you to all of the volunteers who have worked so hard and with great enthusiasm to carry off our parish dinner! Baked goods and crafts came in from the loving hands of those who are from 24 to 93! Plants, too, made a surprise appearance. As we recall the farmers’ produce of years past, maybe we will revive that tradition for the next parish dinner. The talents of the parish family were well displayed!

“Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus”VBS will be held Monday – Friday, July 16 th – July 20th from 9am to noon. We need volunteers that will be able to help make props, teach the lessons, work in the kitchen and who loves to work with Jesus and our children. (All volunteers must have completed the Archdiocesan “Protecting Gods Children” requirements including a completed background clearance.) Our theme is “Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus”. Our next meeting is June 4th. For more information or if you will be attending the meeting, contact Arlene Bloom at 301-385-6881.

THE HOLY ROSARY

We need more Rosary leaders. Will you help lead the Rosary before Mass for our parish family?

Pope John Paul II wrote that we have a critical need to make a commitment to prayer for “the family, the primary cell of society, increasingly menaced by forces of disintegration on both the ideological and practical planes, so as to make us fear for the future of this fundamental and indispensable institution and, with it, for the future of society as a whole.

The revival of the Rosary in Christian families, within the context of a broader pastoral ministry to the family, will be an effective aid to countering the devastating effects of this crisis typical of our age.”

The Food Pantry will be open every month on the 2nd Saturday from 9am -11am. Last month was a success with 9 clients who came to receive from the pantry. Thank you to all of you who donate food to our pantry. Help us get the word out!

WHAT IS CORPUS CHRISTI?It was a humble nun in Belgium, Saint Juliana, who first suggested and advocated for a special feast in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. On September 8, 1264, six years after Juliana's death, Pope Urban IV (1261-1265) established a festival for the whole Church in honor of the Holy Eucharist which the saintly nun had proclaimed to be willed by God. The name “Corpus Christi” is a Latin phrase that refers to the Body of Christ. This feast commemorates the Real Presence of Jesus, His Body and Blood, given to us that we may have life, as Jesus taught in the Bible.
