Our purpose:We are here today to help acquaint you with how to find books. Before we begin locating books, though, we want to help you with a couple of techniques to make your searching easier. First, we will look at how to find the books the MU Libraries’ has available through MERLIN. Then, we will look at how to find other books we have access to check out, which we can find through MOBIUS. Next, we discuss how to locate books using Google Books. At the conclusion of our session, we will walk through how to request books using ILL@MU (InterLibrary Loan). And don’t worry if you can’t remember all of the steps; the most important item we want you to learn today is who we are and where and how to contact us for help with finding books and journal articles and other items you may need as a student at MU.

AND

AND limits your search to results that contain both of your keywords.

The search string “Globalization AND Culture” will return items that contain both the word “Globalization” AND the word “Culture.”

AND makes a search more specific – it lets you narrow your results to a particular topic or the area where two topics overlap.

OR OR limits your search to results that contain at

least one of your keywords. The search string “Culture OR Society” will

return items that contain either the word “Culture” OR the word “Society” or both.

OR lets you widen your search – it gets you more results.

OR is useful for synonym searching: if you don’t know whether an item uses the word “Culture” or the word “Society,” OR lets you search for both at once.

Truncation

Truncation (or “stemming”) is used to search for alternative forms of a keyword, such as plural, adjective, and adverb forms.

To truncate a search term, you need to figure out the word stem: the part of the word that stays the same.

Remove any letters after the word stem and replace them with *.

Truncation: Example

There are many forms of the word “Global”: “Globalize,” “Globally,” “Globalizing,” “Globalism,” etc.

All of these words have in common the word stem “Global.” To search for all of them at once, use the truncated keyword “Global*”.

This will return results containing any of the words above.

What is MERLIN?

MERLIN is the name of the MU Libraries’ online catalog.

The catalog default is set to “MU” for this reason.

MERLIN also serves as the online catalog for the University of Missouri System.

The catalog allows the default to be changed to “All MERLIN” for this purpose.

Locating title, author, and publication information This is located at the top of the record.

bar. This will say if it is in Ellis Library, a branch library, or

in a specific collection within Ellis Library, like reference.

bar. If it says “not checked out”, it is available. If it says “Due by <date>”, it is checked out.

Other useful information The lower part of a record can contain a

summary or table of contents, a page count, and subject terms.▪ You can click on the subject terms to get related

books.

Locating Books in Ellis Library

Books in Ellis Library have unique call numbers. Each number is the book’s “address”. The number begins with one or two letters.▪ These letters help identify where to look in the building.

Using the Letters Each of you should have a yellow paper: this is our

Book Location Guide.▪ The Guide lists the call number ranges and their location.▪ Just match the letter or letters and see what floor it is on.

Example: JC311 .C85 2001 This is located on 2 East.

Searching All MERLIN

This searches Mizzou, UMKC, UMSL, and MST. How can I do this?

On the search screen, change the location in the box to the left of the search box.▪ Change it to say “All MERLIN”.

How do I get the book? Select the blue “Request” button at the top. Input your PawPrint and password. Then, select MU Ellis as your pick-up location. You will receive an e-mail when your book arrives in 3-

Google Book Previews in MERLIN

Some MERLIN Records feature a preview of content in Google Books.

What is in a Preview? It varies, but includes:▪ Table of Contents▪ Selected chapters▪ Full text

How do I preview a title? If this feature is enabled, click the “Google

Preview” button on the right.▪ It is under a picture of the book’s cover

MOBIUS

What is MOBIUS? MOBIUS is the catalog for and the name of a

consortium of over 50 libraries.

What does this mean for you? Because the University of Missouri is a

member library, as a student you are able to check out books from the other libraries that are also members of MOBIUS.

How do I get to MOBIUS? The best way to get to MOBIUS is to transfer from MERLIN.

Requesting Books in MOBIUS

When I find a book, how do I request it? Requesting items from MOBIUS is almost as simple as a mouse click.

Step 1: Select MERLIN from the dropdown choice of library clusters..

Step 2: Enter your name, student ID number, and select ‘MU Ellis Library Circ’ as the Pickup Location..

You should receive an email notifying you when your requested item has arrived and is ready for pick up.

ILL@MU (Interlibrary Loan)

What is it?ILL stands for Interlibrary Loan. It’s a system to borrow books located outside of Missouri.

When can I use it?If a book is not in MOBIUS or the MERLIN Catalog, you may ask for it through ILL.

How long does it take?Sometimes it takes books 2 or more weeks to arrive, but many books arrive faster.

Does it cost money?No. This is a free service.

Can I order textbooks?No. Most libraries do not loan current textbooks.

How do I access it?From the MU Libraries’ Gateway

(http://mulibraries.missouri.edu), click “Request an Item (ILL@MU)”.

This will take you to a log-on page.

Enter your MyZou username and password to log on.

This takes you to the main ILL page. Here, you may see the status of older requests.

To ask for a new book, click “Book” under “New Request”.

Blank spaces with a red star next to them are required.

Fill out as much information as you can.

When you’re finished, click “Submit Request”.

Your request will be sent!

You will receive an e-mail at your MU e-mail account when the book you requested is ready to be picked up.

Go to the library and bring your Student ID to check out the book you requested.

Be sure to return by the due date listed on the book.

Google Books

What is it?It is a free service from Google. You can search the full text of a book. Sometimes a book preview is available.

When should I use it?If you can’t find books on the MERLIN Catalog, try Google Books. Sometimes you can use it to read some of the text inside a book.

How do I access it?http://books.google.com/

Basic searchTo run a basic search, put in some keywords that describe your topic and click “search books”.

Google Books After you run your search, Google Books shows your

results.

If you see “preview”, you can read partial full-text in the book.

preview the book, or find the book in a library.
