January 14, 2018 Page 3 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Saint Edward Parish Family:

Like Jesus did to Andrew, who became one of his first disciples, in this Sunday's Gospel

passage, he says to you and to each of us: "What are you looking for?" When you pray,

and when you look at a crucifix, or when you see a picture of Jesus, what exactly are you

looking for?

Jesus says: "Come and see!" Come and see what? His love? His healing power? His

supernatural ability to answer our prayers? Whatever we're looking for, the reason

we're seeking it is because we don't yet have it.

Jesus is the fulfillment of every promise by God the Father. Jesus is the fullness of love,

the provider of mercy, the divine healer, the perfect mediator of all our prayers and

concerns and everything else we truly need. So, why does it feel like something is s8ll

missing? Why do our lives feel incomplete? Why do our prayers seem unanswered?

The answer is revealed in what happened aFer Andrew began to follow Jesus. We read

about it in Samuel's response to God's invita8on. We proclaim it in the Responsorial

Psalm: "Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will."

Andrew, his brother Simon Peter, and the other disciples were privileged to witness first-

hand the wondrous miracles of Jesus. They personally experienced God's love through

the gentle eyes of Jesus, the tone of kindness in his voice, and the forgiveness that was

visible in his smile.

Yet with all of this, they did not really find all that he was looking for (remember how

easily Peter felt afraid or confused or uncertain) un8l he was on the giving end of it. He

didn't discover the fullness of Jesus un8l Jesus was no longer present in the flesh and

they accepted their calling to con8nue Christ's earthly ministry.

The same is true for us who have never seen Jesus' actual eyes or heard his actual voice.

We find what we're seeking when we give it to others. Why? Because then we discover

that we really had it all along! This is the miracle of "Here am I, Lord; I come to do your

will."

May God Bless & Keep You Always! F. Ri

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

“Ordinary Time” began for us this week. On the old calendar, the feast of the Presenta8on, s8ll more than two weeks away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sadly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Chris8an community has been largely uprooted by poli8cal strife. The Church of the Na8vity stands (barely) in remarkable disrepair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wiring is faulty, and the worship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Chris8ans. The church was founded by the Emperor Constan8ne in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and rebuilt by the Emperor Jus8nian. When the area came under Muslim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respected, and in return Chris8ans allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right s8ll upheld. Earlier in that century, invading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Na8vity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelFh century, and it is their plan that survives. Down a few stone steps is a stone groQo with a silver star marking the place of Christ’s birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an interna8onal crisis that exploded into the Crimean War.

Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and

Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the groQo, but don’t enjoy the best of

friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chapel of the Manger, and

avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St.

Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

to.

do. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

burcio. Gracias a Dios mis padres no eran tradicionalitas,

gencio, Acursio, Adiuto, Frisio y Tolomeo. O si es niña, Pris-

cila o el femenino de los previos. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

January 14, 2018 Page 5 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Hello Dear Friends!

Last week in the Confirma8on Class, we talked about the Holy Spirit. The difficult

thing about teaching about the Holy Spirit, is that it is kind of an abstract idea.

Where as God the Father is easy to understand because of the crea8on stories

and the stories about God in the Old and New Testaments and Jesus the Son is

relatable because he is a physical human being who was also divine, the Holy

Spirit is much more fluid. We talk about the Holy Spirit as a feeling and an

inspira8on. The freshmen were also confused when we first brought up the

topic. How did we teach about the Holy Spirit? Well, we had the teens enter into

an experience. I asked one of the teens to help me. We went over to a door in

the room. She was in the room with the other teens, and I was on the other side.

I told her that we were going to do this in two parts. For the first part, I had her

ignore what I was going to do. I went on the other side of the door and started

knocking. And knocking. And knocking. She didn’t open the door, but I did hear

her laughing. She heard me but was ac8vely ignoring me. Then I had her open

the door whenever she felt like it. I knocked once and she opened the door. I

greeted her and showed her around the room, eventually leading back to her

seat. Upon reflec8on, she said it was actually really hard to ignore the knocking.

She could hear it and wanted to open the door, but she forced herself not to.

When she could open the door, it was easy to do. When I started leading her

around the room, she was first unsure but trusted me to keep her safe and she

was! The teens seemed to beQer understand the Holy Spirit, much like Samuel in

the first reading. When both Samuel and the Confirma8on student experienced

the Holy Spirit calling them in their lives. While confused, their trust in the Lord

enabled them to experience the Holy Spirit working in their lives. Let us be open

to the Spirit invi8ng us to allow God to work in our lives this week. Let us be

open to hearing the call.

Peace and all goodness,

Vicky Hathaway
