Volusia County Libraries “Great Gatsby” Art ShowThe Volusia County Public Library system will sponsor a Great Gatsby art show as part of its 2017 Big Read programs. Emerging and professional artists age 18 and over are invited to submit up to three works by Nov. 15 for possible inclusion in ARTiculating Gatsby, a juried exhibit overseen by a committee of local art experts. Selected works will be displayed from Jan. 3 to 25 in the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, Peabody Auditorium and New Smyrna Beach Regional Library.

Artwork must reflect “The Great Gatsby,” a 1925 novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. All media, except video, will be accepted. Artists are expected to explain the connection between their work and the novel. The library system received a $15,000 Big Read grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in May and chose “The Great Gatsby” as its theme. The library system’s 13 branches and other venues will host book discussions and schedule author talks, theatrical events and music programs in January and February 2017. For more information about the art exhibit, contact Art Exhibit Coordinator Margaret Schnebly Hodge at [email protected] or Programming Coordinator Deborah Shafer at [email protected].

MEMBER NEWS:Congratulations to Artists’

Workshop Member Regina Wise who was featured as cover artist for the Flagler July/August 2016 issue of the Gage Publishing Flagler magazine “Water

ART BOOK CLUB Join us for food, fun, and wonderful conversation...

First meeting: Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 4 - 6 PMBook: “The Passion of Artemisia” by Susan VreelandPlace: 49 Fairway CircleRSVP: [email protected] by Sept. 6• Delicacies from Italy • Video on her painting “Judith Slaying Holofernes”

AWI MEMORIAL LIBRARY The library has many new books of fiction, non-fiction, art history and art criticism. Many of the books the Book Club has read are available. I will be highlighting two of them this month:

Book: “The Lost Painting” by Jonathan Harr“Harr brings his narrative talents to the story of how a Caravaggio painting, “The Taking of Christ,” was identified after centuries of obscurity. He follows a precocious graduate student into the archives of a crumbling palazzo, an Italian restorer moored in Ireland, and a patrician British scholar, each of whom contributes a piece of the puzzle.” The New Yorker

Book: “Madame Picasso” by Anne GirardNovelist Anne Girard brings to life the mesmerizing and untold story of Eva Gouel, the unforgettable woman who stole the heart of the greatest artist of our time....A brilliant but eccentric artist, Picasso sets his sights on Eva, and Eva can’t help but be drawn into his web.

Librarian’s CornerLucinda SloanThe Artists’ Workshop sponsored its

17th Annual New Smyrna Beach High School Visual Arts Exhibit at the New Smyrna Beach Library this past May. The exhibit showcased 63 original works of art by students in grades 9-12, in various media including photography, sculpture and 2D drawing, painting, mixed media and collage. The student art was on display for public viewing at the NSB Library throughout the month of May.

Artists’ Workshop President Liz Clayton welcomed students and families, Mayor James Hathaway provided words of encouragement to the students, emphasizing how strongly the arts are woven into the fabric of the community, and AWI member Dr. Jane Owen was the Exhibit Juror who gave thoughtful commentary on each piece of art receiving an award. Fifteen NSB High School students were presented cash awards for their artistic achievements in the categories of 2D: Painting/Drawing, Photography, and 3D: Sculpture/Ceramics. Dear Members,

And so begins another eventful season at the Artists’ Workshop! It’s time to get out your oil paints, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, mixed media items and anything else you use to create wonderful works of art. I am looking forward to this coming season. We have new class offerings, additional teachers, and a diverse list of workshops scheduled. I’m especially excited about our totally revamped and expanded ceramics program. There will definitely be something for everyone to express their creativity. I hope everyone will attend our first general meeting where you will meet our teachers and learn all about what the Artists’ Workshop has to offer this year. See you then!

From the Editor:

Hope you had a wonderful summer! The Artists’ Workshop has a great lineup of activities for the 2016-17 season. Please plan to join us for meetings, classes, workshops, and other events this year!

The cutoff date for inputs for the next (September) newsletter will be Wednesday, September 10, 2016.

Current and past newsletters are always posted on our website:www.artistsworkshopinc.com/newsletters.html
