So, to give you an idea of just how much you’d spend maintaining your car, we’ve designed our first- ever Maintenance Cost Study. And it’s not just the cost of spares or one service alone that we’ve analysed, but the total cost of service parts, their service life, the labour rates, as well as the service intervals of each car, extrapolated over 60,000km. For most owners, this would come up at around the five-year mark, and so this study will give you a very good insight of the cost you’d incur over a typical ownership period. Over the years, our ‘Spare Parts Study’ has compared the cost of typically consumed parts across three baskets – service, mechanical and accident repair, thus giving you a very good insight into the likely expenses you would incur. But this Maintenance Cost study will give you a real-world usage picture. METHODOLOGY Arriving at a model that is fair and can be uniformly applied across vehicles is quite tricky though. Some vehicles may have a longer service interval (in kilometres) but you may be called in for a service periodically, irrespective of the mileage you’ve covered. And even then, some brands will allow you to extend the service life of certain parts if the condition is found to be okay. Thus, in a bid to keep things uniform and reduce complexity, the study takes into account the cost of the service parts, the frequency of their change and the cost of associated labour for the services undertaken up to the 60,000km mark, as per the manufacturers’ recommendations. The back end calculations were enormous, as was the data collection, and here we’d like to thank the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India (FADA) for their assistance extended to us. 0-60,000 km IN HOW MUCH?

We bring you an exhaustive study on the overall cost of maintenance of cars over a 60,000km, five-year period.

Saumil Shah and Sergius Barretto crunch the numbers.

Kitna deti hai? – that’s something everyone wants to know, but how much do you spend on the

maintenance of your car? Service bills may only come every few months, but they can be big and they all add up.

So, to give you an idea of just how much you’d spend maintaining your car, we’ve designed our first-ever Maintenance Cost Study.

Over the years, our ‘Spare Parts Study’ has compared the cost of

typically consumed parts across three baskets – service, mechanical and accident repair, thus giving you a very good insight into the likely expenses you would incur. But this Maintenance Cost study will give you a real-world usage picture.

METHODOLOGYArriving at a model that is fair and can be uniformly applied across vehicles is quite tricky though.

MAINTENANCE COSTS S T U D Y∆ did. Maruti also declined to take part in our study, but we managed to source the data from various dealer sources, and thus the prices should be treated as estimates. We wish all the brands did take part, especially since we were very transparent about our study and its aim.

BUDGET HATCHBACKSCurrently, this segment consists of just four cars, which doesn’t indicate a lack of interest or market potential, but just how cost-competitive the segment has become, especially with the more stringent safety norms and BS6 emissions standards now in place. Mass-market specialist Maruti Suzuki has two offerings in this space – the Alto and the S-Presso – each with a single engine on offer, while Hyundai has vacated this space with the discontinuation of the Eon. Of course, there are no diesel engines to be found here. l All cars in this segment have a one-year/10,000km service interval.l The Renault Kwid and the Datsun Redigo are based on the same platform and share several parts. l Both are available with the same choice of engines – a 0.8-litre or a 1.0-litre petrol – but whichever one you choose, the service costs remain constant.l Datsun charges a flat Rs 2,089 as labour costs from the 20,000km service onwards, whereas Renault’s labour charges are a flat Rs 2,006 from the 30,000km service onwards and Rs 2,065 for the 60,000km service.l Although more or less on par, the overall maintenance costs for the Renault are a bit lower than those of the Datsun.l The Maruti Alto is a bit more expensive to run than its rivals. While the cost of most parts is lower, Maruti’s labour costs range between Rs 2,313 and Rs 2,478 from the 20,000km service onwards, which is a bit higher than its rivals.l The Maruti S-Presso’s maintenance costs are just a touch higher than the Alto’s. Its labour costs, like the Alto’s, are in the same price range, which is a bit higher than the Datsun and Renault, chargeable from the 20,000km service onwards.

ENTRY-LEVEL HATCHBACKS Sitting just above the budget segment, entry-level hatchbacks offer an improvement

MID-RANGE HATCHBACKS With the budget and entry-level hatchbacks offering petrol-only power, the mid-range hatchback segment is where you will find the most affordable diesel. And while, in the pre-BS6 era, all the cars here had diesel power, it’s now only the Nios and Figo that come with diesel engines. The KUV100, Swift and the Ignis are now petrol only.l One year/10,000km is the standard service interval in this segment.l It’s a close fight for the top spot between the Hyundai and the Ford, though the Figo comes out on top in both, petrol and diesel guises, narrowly pipping the Hyundai.l Ford charges a flat rate of Rs 1,926 for labour from the 20,000km service, amounting to a total of Rs 9,630. Hyundai, on the other hand, charges for labour from the 30,000km

service at a flat rate of Rs 2,620, amounting to a total of Rs 10,480.l The Mahindra KUV100 has a higher number of replacement parts, but what balances the Mahindra’s cost are its labour rates. These are applicable from the 30,000km service onwards, averaging Rs 1,895 per

service, which helps it tuck below the Maruti Swift and Ignis, the priciest cars to service in this segment.l The two Marutis share the same engine and other components, but it is due to their preset labour charges that there is a slight difference in their total costs.

PREMIUM HATCHBACKS Once a segment with a fair share of diesel offerings, the premium hatchback segment is now largely a petrol-only space, due to the advent of the strict BS6 emission norms. Hyundai, Maruti, Honda and Volkswagen have all been ◊

Maintenance bills

may be far between, but they do add up.

Across segments, the

Renault Kwid is the cheapest to maintain.

The Nios and Figo are the most affordable, with near-identical maintenance costs; they are also the only two diesel offerings.

in terms of space as well as performance and features. Here too, the segment is a petrol-only line-up in the BS6 era. There are six models on offer from four manufacturers.l One year/10,000km is the standard service interval in this segment, with the exception of Tata, which offers a longer, 15,000km interval. Tiago owners

need to make a routine visit to the service centre for a check-up every 7,500km, for which the company charges Rs 850 from the 22,500km check-up onwards.l The Datsun Go is the most economical to maintain due to fewer replacement parts and a flat Rs 1,770 labour charge from the 20,000km service onwards.l Trailing the Go is the Hyundai Santro, which is almost as light on the pocket.l The other Hyundai, the Grand i10, comes in third spot. Hyundai charges for labour from the 30,000km service at a flat rate of Rs 2,620, amounting to a total of Rs 10,480.l The Maruti WagonR is the only car in this segment with two engine options, both have similar maintenance costs and come in below the Tata Tiago, which, despite having the least number of services up to 60,000km, sits on top of the maintenance cost chart. ∆ familiar players in this segment and have offered diesels in the past, but they now only have petrol models. For Hyundai, though, this is only temporary, as the company decided to skip the BS6 upgrade of the outgoing i20’s diesel engine, and relaunch the diesel with the all-new i20. Until then, though, it’s only the newest entrant, the Tata Altroz, that gets a diesel engine option.l The Japanese and Korean models in this segment have a one-year/10,000km service interval, while Volkswagen and

Tata require a service every 15,000km. The Tata Altroz, however, requires a routine check-up every 7,500km, chargeable at Rs 1,000 from 22,500km onwards.l Hyundai charges for labour only from the 30,000km service onwards, at a flat Rs 2,873, and with low cost of replacement parts, the i20 is the most pocket-friendly model to run.l The Maruti Baleno’s twin from the Toyota stable, the Glanza, is the second most affordable car to maintain, followed by the non-turbo version of the

Volkswagen Polo petrol. l The mild-hybrid version of the Glanza is a bit more expensive to run than the standard version, and the maintenance cost per kilometre is on par with the Honda Jazz and Tata Altroz petrol.l Interestingly, the Baleno is pricier to maintain than the similar-engined Glanza, with the bigger difference coming from the higher labour rates. l The Polo presents a very interesting case. While the 1.0 TSI engine tops the sheet with the highest cost of maintenance, the

regular 1.0 MPI naturally aspirated engine is very competitive and comes in below the Baleno, Jazz, Glanza (Dualjet) and the Altroz.

COMPACT SEDANSThe sub-four-metre sedan or compact sedan is a segment unique to India. Born out of the regulation that gives vehicles shorter than four metres – and with engines

Surprisingly,

the Toyota Glanza is cheaper to

maintain than the Maruti Baleno.

Tigor, like every other Tata, has a 15,000km service interval, but needs a check-up every 7,500km.

less than 1.2 litre (petrol) and 1.5 litre (diesel) – certain tax breaks, the compact sedan was designed to provide the aspirational value of a sedan at an incremental price over a hatchback. And although this segment has witnessed an onslaught by compact SUVs, it still remains a busy space with six offerings, namely the Tata Tigor, Honda Amaze, Ford Aspire, Hyundai Xcent, Hyundai Aura and the segment leader, the Maruti Dzire. After the onset of the stricter BS6 emission norms, Ford, Honda and Hyundai still offer petrol and diesel engine options, whereas Maruti and Tata are petrol only.l A one-year/10,000km service interval is the norm in this segment, apart from the Tata Tigor, which has a longer, 15,000km service interval. Interestingly though, Tata calls in owners for a routine check-up every 7,500km, which is chargeable from the 22,500km mark, at Rs 850 per visit.

l What’s interesting is that, among the petrol sedans, the Honda Amaze, Ford Aspire and Hyundai Aura (with either the 1.0-litre or the 1.2-litre engine) are the most affordable to maintain, with identical costs of Rs 0.34/km.l The Ford Aspire and Hyundai Aura also lock horns in the diesel segment and are the two most affordable ones, with near-identical costs of Rs 0.45/km and Rs 0.44/km, respectively.l Ford’s labour rate is set at a flat Rs 1,926 from the 20,000km service onwards, which is the lowest in this segment.l Surprisingly, the Xcent, which shares its 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines with the Aura, is a bit pricier to maintain. Hyundai also charges higher labour rates for the Xcent, at Rs 2,873 per service, while the newer Aura’s labour charges are Rs 2,620 per service, both from the 30,000km service mark. Curiously, the Xcent’s pollen filter costs much

more than the Aura’s.l The Tata Tigor requires the fewest services due to the longer service interval, but it is the second most costly to maintain.l The Maruti Dzire is the costliest petrol compact sedan to maintain, and while the cost of replacement parts isn’t particularly expensive, it is the labour charges from the 20,000km service, which average

at Rs 2,700, that adds to the costs.l The Honda Amaze diesel is much heavier on the pocket compared to the Ford Aspire, Hyundai Aura and Xcent. It is the only diesel car that requires a coolant change at the end of 60 months, which adds to its costs. And although not by a big margin, the Honda’s labour costs are also a bit higher than the rest. ◊

MAINTENANCE COSTS S T U D YMID-SIZE SEDANS The mid-size sedan segment may have had its market share eaten into by SUVs lately, but it remains a desirable and aspirational vehicle type that many Indians still flock to as they upgrade from their hatchbacks.

In fact, this year alone has seen many big changes in the segment. The Maruti Ciaz has ditched its diesel engine, as have the Vento and Rapid, which have gained an all-new 1.0 turbo-petrol engine instead. The Verna was given a comprehensive facelift with three all-new engines, and of course, a brand-new generation of the Honda City was launched. All these new developments will have undoubtedly brought a renewed interest to the mid-size sedan segment.l The Honda City and Hyundai

rates, which alternate between Rs 3,646

and Rs 2,608 from the 20,000km service onwards for the diesel, and Rs 3,198

and Rs 2,159 for the petrol.

l The Volkswagen Vento and the Skoda Rapid are the priciest to maintain in this lot. The oil change is more expensive than the competition and labour rates too are higher than the others.l Despite sharing its engine and components with other Maruti cars, the Ciaz petrol isn’t the most pocket friendly of the bunch. Over the five chargeable services up to 60,000km, the Maruti commands a labour cost of Rs 14,384.

EXECUTIVE SEDANS The executive sedan segment has dwindled down to merely the Honda Civic and the Hyundai Elantra. The third car in the segment, the fully imported Skoda Octavia RS245, isn’t exactly a direct competitor due to its price and performance, but we’ve included it here anyway. l The Hyundai Elantra is much cheaper to maintain than the Honda Civic, costing a little more than half of what the Civic does per kilometre. Interestingly, Hyundai also charges for labour from the 40,000km service onwards, at a flat Rs 3,369 for each service.l Driving up the Civic’s costs a bit more are coolant and brake fluid replacements, which aren’t necessary for the Elantra, as well as higher labour charges applicable from the 20,000km service onwards.l In the Skoda’s case, the engine oil itself costs Rs 5,472 during each service, plus additional items like spark plugs, fan belt/drive belt, transmission/transaxle oil and brake fluid further add to its total costs. Also, higher labour costs of over Rs 5,700 for the 30,000km and 45,000km service, and over Rs 6,500 for the 60,000km service, make the Skoda the costliest to maintain.

PREMIUM EXECUTIVE SEDANSThanks to the ever-growing popularity of the SUV, the higher-end sedan segments, like the premium sedans, consists of very few players. Today it is made up of just two – the Skoda Superb and the Toyota Camry. ◊

The mid-size sedan segment is dominated by petrols and

has just two diesel offerings.

Whether in petrol or diesel guise, the Hyundai Elantra is the cheapest in its class.

Verna are the only two sedans to offer a diesel engine option in this otherwise petrol-only space.l The Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento have a one-year/15,000km service interval, while the rest have a 10,000km service interval.l With a relatively affordable cost of parts and labour, the Hyundai Verna, in either the 1.5 petrol, 1.0 turbo-petrol or 1.5 diesel guises, is the most pocket-friendly over six years or 60,000km. Hyundai also charges for labour at a flat rate of

Rs 2,879 from the third annual or 30,000km service onwards.l The Yaris is also quite light on the pocket, and Toyota too charges for labour only from the 30,000km service onwards. Its AC filter/air refiner is the most expensive, which requires a replacement every 30,000km. However, the City petrol is a bit pricier than the Yaris.l The Honda City diesel, meanwhile, is significantly more expensive compared to Hyundai’s diesel. This is a result of comparatively higher labour

MAINTENANCE COSTS S T U D Y

l All the models in this segment have a one-year/10,000km service interval.l The Hyundai Creta is the most economical to run in this segment, with the lowest parts prices and the most affordable labour rates.l What’s interesting is, contrary to the popular notion of turbo- petrols being more expensive to run, Hyundai’s turbo-petrol costs about as much as the regular 1.5-litre petrol version.l The Renault Duster is the only one that warrants a coolant and fan belt/drive belt change every 48 months, thus adding to its costs.l Hyundai and Kia share the same

Ford and Hyundai

rule when it comes to affordability.

engines as well as several parts, but the Kia Seltos is a bit more expensive to run than the Hyundai.l Because the S-Cross petrol shares its engine with the Brezza, the cost of spares and also the service is identical. However, that total cost is a bit higher than its competitors, making this petrol crossover the most expensive to run.l Mahindra charges for labour only from the 30,000km service onwards, but the Scorpio is costlier to run due to the comparatively higher costs of an oil change every

10,000km and an air filter change every 20,000km.

EXECUTIVE SUVsIn this segment, the petrol competitors include the MG Hector, Jeep Compass, VW T-Roc and the Skoda Karoq, all of which use turbo-petrol engines. In the diesel camp, three out of the four competitors, namely the Compass, Hector and Tata Harrier, are powered by the same 2.0-litre FCA diesel engine, while the fourth rival,

the Mahindra XUV500, uses an in-house 2.2-litre powerplant.l The petrol MG Hector has a service interval of one year/10,000km, while Jeep and Skoda have a 15,000km annual service. However, the MG is the most economical to run due to considerably lower-priced spares and more pocket-friendly labour rates.l The Jeep’s parts costs are much higher than the Hector’s and what further drives up costs is the 1.4 turbo-petrol engine’s spark plug ◊

l The premium sedan segment consists of just two models and both are offered in petrol avatars, with the Camry being a hybrid.l Over the course of 60,000km, the Camry Hybrid has six periodic services, whereas the Skoda has only four, but it’s the Camry that costs less to maintain.l In addition to the standard replacement parts, the Superb also requires its drive belt and spark plugs to be replaced, which isn’t the case with the Camry. Higher labour and parts costs make the Skoda much more expensive to maintain.

COMPACT SUVs Compact SUVs seem to be just the perfect body style for India, combining the space and practicality of an SUV with the compact footprint of a small car. So much so that there have already been two new launches in the segment this year – the Sonet and Urban Cruiser – which, though, are too new to include in this survey. This segment sees a fair fight

between a number of players like the Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and the Hyundai Venue. We’ve even included Ford and Honda’s compact crossovers, the Freestyle and WR-V.l All the compact SUVs have their service intervals set at one year/10,000km, except the Tata Nexon whose intervals are one year/15,000km.l The Ford Freestyle, whether with the 1.2-litre petrol or the 1.5-litre diesel, turns out to be the most economical to run.l In the case of the Hyundai Venue, labour is chargeable from the 30,000km service onwards, at a flat Rs 2,220, making it among the more affordable ones to run.l The Honda WR-V is one of the pricier cars to maintain in the segment, with the petrol version’s maintenance cost per kilometre being even higher than most of its diesel competitors.l The running costs of the Tata Nexon are higher than the Honda, due to costlier replacement parts. The Tata also requires a minor

check-up service at intervals of 7,500km, which is chargeable at Rs 1,000 for each service, starting with the 22,500km check-up (which we have included in the second, third and fourth service costs).l Surprisingly, the Maruti Vitara Brezza is the priciest to maintain here. And while its service costs are lower than those of the petrol Nexon, it requires two more services before the 60,000km mark.

MID-SIZE SUVs SUVs are all the rage now and this segment has been hugely popular, all the way

since its inception with the Renault Duster back in 2012, with a number of customers as well as players today. Comprising of blockbuster models like the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta, this segment also includes other biggies like the Renault Duster petrol and the ladder-frame Mahindra Scorpio.

Engine oil is usually one of the most expensive components in a service.

∆ set, which costs Rs 3,960.l The fully imported Skoda Karoq’s running costs are higher than those of the Hector and Compass, and a significant cost is its fan belt/drive belt replacement at the fourth year or 60,000km service, which costs Rs 6,108, excluding labour. l But the most expensive petrol offering is the also-imported Volkswagen T-Roc, and despite the first service being free of labour charges, the second, third and fourth services’ labour charges contribute significantly to its running cost.l All the SUVs powered by the FCA-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine have a service interval of one year/15,000km, whereas the Mahindra XUV500 needs a service every 10,000km.l What comes as a surprise is that the homegrown Tata Harrier is the most expensive to run. This isn’t

down to higher spare costs alone, but because of labour-intensive jobs like the fan belt/drive belt and belt tensioner replacement every four years.l Also, in addition to regular service intervals, the Harrier also requires a basic checkup at 22,500, 37,500 and 52,500km, each of which costs Rs 1,416 (which we have added to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th service costs).

Discuss service cost estimates to avoid nasty surprises in your final bill.

∆ set you back by Rs 27,893 over the second, third and fourth paid services.l The Honda CR-V is the only one that requires a coolant change that happens every five years.l Hyundai charges for labour from the 40,000km service onward and the Tucson proves to be the most pocket friendly, with the fewest parts requiring replacement, and with affordable rates.

LADDER-FRAME SUVSl The Ford Endeavour is the most economical to run, with the lowest cost of replacement parts, and a flat labour rate of Rs 3,240 for the paid periodical services.l Mahindra boasts of the cheapest replacement parts and labour rates, but it requires additional

replacement parts such as a fuel filter, transmission/transaxle oil, rear differential oil, transfer case oil and clutch fluid, thus it comes in a bit higher than the Ford.l The Fortuner diesel is a bit more expensive to run than the Endeavour as, among other things, Toyota replaces the rear differential oil every 40,000km.

MPVs While spacious and flexible, and seemingly a good solution for our market, MPVs aren’t exactly hot sellers. And although there are very popular models like the Innova and Ertiga, there aren’t enough to divide them up into various price segments and compare their costs. Thus, presented here is only the tabular data for your perusal. AI

The Alturas has the lowest labour and parts cost, but overall the Ford is the cheapest to maintain.
