It has bd@n consistently rumored about town that an election will be called within the next few weeks in this city to elect a mem- ber on the board of alderman from the second ward. It is stated that Mr. W. A. Hays, who has left Opelousas, will tender his resignation and that an elec- tion will have to be held to fill the vacancy. Since the rumor cropped up that an election would be held in the second ward the name of Mr. L. L. Dane], who opposed Mr. Hays at the election held in this city in January and who withdrew from the race after receiving the same amount of votes as Mr. Hays, has constantly been heard in connection with the place, soon to be made vacant. Mr. Danel's friends have urged him to make the race and it is expected, in the event of the resignation of Mr. Hays, that he will most probably be the representative of his ward once more. It is not known positively whether or not Mr. Hays will re- sign, but his inmath friends are confident that he will tender his resignation, as it is claimed that he will henceforth reside in Hous- ton, Texas, for which place he departed last week. In all proba- bilities Mr. Danel will not have any opposition as politics in Ope- lousas is at a standstill and no fight is expected to be made for this office. Southwestern Reflections (Contributed by Development Bureau) Again the time has come to em- phasize diversification and crop rotation. Many thousands of acres of corn is maturing on the farms of Southwest Louisiana, which is a mighty good thing be- cause it spoils one form of diver- sification. But even so, it should be re- membered that a big corn crop draws heavily upon the soil, and unless the elements that go to produce corn are restored to the soil, the land grows poorer from year to year. Much of this fertility can be re- tained if the farmers would only sow cow-peas in their crop; be- cause the cow-pea draws nitrogen from the air and stores it in the soil. It is a cheap and most sat- isfactory soil builder. Still there were hundreds of farmers in Southwest Louisiana who did not plant cow-peas be- cause they were too dear. At the highest price known cow-peas are cheaper, value considered, than any form of commercial fer- tier, and it is far cheaper to I price than it is to try to produce corn without them. There are other legumes and nitrogen bearing plants which no real farmer should overlook. Crimson clover, red clover and vetch do well here, while lespe- deza grows wild throughout Southwest Louisiana. In September many of the most sucessful farmers plant oats, and no farmer should be without an abundant acreage this fall of this pirofitable grain crop. Fer- tilize your land and prepare be- fore planting and you will be agreeably surprised at the result. It will furnish unequalled win- ter grazing when the land is dry and still be ready with an abun- dant harvest in May. Sow nothing but Louisiana grown seed, and in January sow lespedeza throughout the oats, and another fine crop will be ready in the fall. Have all your seeds tested, or guaranteed. e . Pretty Wedding at L.eonville. 0 On Wednesday of last week a two well known young people of e the village of Leonville were e united as one by the Catholic * priest of Port Barre. The cere- Y mony was performed in the Leon- Sville Church, which was very artistically decorated for the oc- v casion. The contracting parties were Mr. Lee Mallett, son of Andre Mallett, a prosperous farm- t er of the Leonville section of this parish, and Miss Regina Boud- reau, charming daughter of the late Albert Boudreau, who was also a very prosperous and well known farmer of that section of St. Landry. The best man was Mr. J. J. Benoit, and the maid-of-honor was Miss Cora Lanclos, daugh- ter of Mr. Elger Lanclos, one of the most prominent citizens of Leonville. During the cere- mony, which was witnessed by over two hundred friends of the happy couple, the Arnaudville orchestra rendered very sweet music. The wedding took place at 5 o'clock Wednesday evening and several Opelousas people at- tended while many sent their congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Mallett. Cotton Gin at Prairie Ronde. Several of the prosperous farmers of Prairie Ronde have gotten together and organized the Prairie Ronde Gin Company with a capital of $10,000 to oper- ate a 'modern up-to-date cotton gin. The gin is already under way of construction and it is ex- pected by the end of the week things will be humming in that section of the parish. Those most interested in the gin are Emar Andrepont. Judge Adolphe Guillory, Edgar Prud- homme and Emar Lafleur. Judge I Guillory is to be the president; and Edgar Andrepont the man-: ager of the gin. The farmers in the Prairie It's Easy to Surrender a pleasure for a necessity. Without a doubt, this is very often the cause of neglected teeth. If you will surrender a trifling sum on your teeth, now, you will be the largest gainer. What YOU Gain by having me give them the attention they need, you will consider worthy to tell neigh- bors about. My operations give patients a pleasure that doesn't fade away. It is well for you to know the condition of your teeth, and I am anx- ious to tell you. A delayed call has lost many a tooth. JAS. A. SHAW, Dentist. Ronde section of St. Landry con- template making several thou-- sand bales this season and if that is the case the Prairie Ronde Gin Company will have a most prosperous year, as well as the other gins in that section of the parish. -- *_ Mueller-Barnes. Miss Hilda Mueller, of Penn- slyvania and Mr. Wiley Barnes of Arkansas were married in Washington in the presence of a number of their Louisiana friends on Thursday afternoon. Rev. Mr. Kuss, Lutheran minist- er of New Orleans, tied the knots for the happy couple. Since their stay in Washington the young couple have made hosts of friends, who have been ex- tending them congratulations since Thursday evening. SIGICKENED BY CALOMEL. If you ever saw anyone made sick by calomel you won't want any more calomel yourself. There's no real reason why a per son should take calomel anyway, when fifty cents will buy a large bottle of Dodson's Liver Tone-a good remedy that perfectly and safely takes the place of dan- gerous calomel, which is only another form of deadly and poi- sonous mercury. Dodson's Liver Tone is a pleas- ant-tasting vegetable liquid which will start the liver just as calomel, and which has absolutely no bad after-effects. Children and grown people can take Dodson's Liver Tone with- out any restriction of habit or diet. Shute's Drugstore sell it and guarantee it to take the place of calomel, and will refund your money at once if it fails in your case. adv. SHERIFF'S SALE DR. CHARLES F. HUMORED ELEGTIONSOON TO BE CALLED

Danel Will Probably MakeRace For Alderman From

Second Ward.

It has bd@n consistently rumored

about town that an election will

be called within the next few

weeks in this city to elect a mem-

ber on the board of aldermanfrom the second ward. It isstated that Mr. W. A. Hays, whohas left Opelousas, will tenderhis resignation and that an elec-tion will have to be held to fillthe vacancy.

Since the rumor cropped upthat an election would be held inthe second ward the name of Mr.L. L. Dane], who opposed Mr.Hays at the election held in thiscity in January and who withdrewfrom the race after receiving thesame amount of votes as Mr.Hays, has constantly been heardin connection with the place, soonto be made vacant. Mr. Danel'sfriends have urged him to makethe race and it is expected, in theevent of the resignation of Mr.Hays, that he will most probablybe the representative of his wardonce more.

It is not known positivelywhether or not Mr. Hays will re-sign, but his inmath friends areconfident that he will tender hisresignation, as it is claimed thathe will henceforth reside in Hous-ton, Texas, for which place hedeparted last week. In all proba-bilities Mr. Danel will not haveany opposition as politics in Ope-lousas is at a standstill and nofight is expected to be made forthis office.

Southwestern Reflections(Contributed by Development Bureau)

Again the time has come to em-phasize diversification and croprotation. Many thousands ofacres of corn is maturing on thefarms of Southwest Louisiana, which is a mighty good thing be-cause it spoils one form of diver-sification.

But even so, it should be re-membered that a big corn cropdraws heavily upon the soil, andunless the elements that go toproduce corn are restored to thesoil, the land grows poorer fromyear to year.

Much of this fertility can be re-tained if the farmers would onlysow cow-peas in their crop; be-cause the cow-pea draws nitrogenfrom the air and stores it in thesoil. It is a cheap and most sat-isfactory soil builder.

Still there were hundreds offarmers in Southwest Louisianawho did not plant cow-peas be-cause they were too dear. Atthe highest price known cow-peasare cheaper, value considered, than any form of commercial fer-tier, and it is far cheaper to I

price than it is to try to producecorn without them.

There are other legumes andnitrogen bearing plants which noreal farmer should overlook.

Crimson clover, red clover andvetch do well here, while lespe-deza grows wild throughoutSouthwest Louisiana.

In September many of the mostsucessful farmers plant oats, andno farmer should be without anabundant acreage this fall ofthis pirofitable grain crop. Fer-tilize your land and prepare be-fore planting and you will beagreeably surprised at the result.

It will furnish unequalled win-ter grazing when the land is dryand still be ready with an abun-dant harvest in May.

Sow nothing but Louisianagrown seed, and in January sowlespedeza throughout the oats, and another fine crop will beready in the fall.

Have all your seeds tested, orguaranteed.

sick by calomel you won't wantany more calomel yourself. There's no real reason why a person should take calomel anyway, when fifty cents will buy a largebottle of Dodson's Liver Tone-agood remedy that perfectly andsafely takes the place of dan-gerous calomel, which is onlyanother form of deadly and poi-sonous mercury.

Dodson's Liver Tone is a pleas-ant-tasting vegetable liquidwhich will start the liver just ascalomel, and which has absolutelyno bad after-effects.

Children and grown people cantake Dodson's Liver Tone with-out any restriction of habit ordiet. Shute's Drugstore sell itand guarantee it to take the placeof calomel, and will refund yourmoney at once if it fails in yourcase. adv.
