2014 THE NEW HOMMEL;

Studio OxL and the residence of Sint Marten Sonsbeekkwartier in Arnhem collaborated in order to redevelop the local community centre.

The residence of the neighbourhood had a big part in the initiation, program and realisation of the community centre. The building originates from the 60’s was redeveloped with a lot of manpower and little budget. Besides Studio OxL’s goal to provide well-detailed architecture we also engage into social projects or help to maintain social real estate. This multifunctional accommodation has been realised with a ‘user centred ‘ strategy. Allowing the users and organisations, such as Siza, RIBW, BIZ and Rijnstad, to maximize their influence on the program, floor plan

layout and level of technical detail. Studio OxL used this project as a pilot to test the bottom up malleability of our society. At first Studio OxL initiated the presentation for government funding and helped to generate the program of demands. Later on we proposed a design, which the users could alter to their needs. We did building permit and working drawings. Building management was in collaboration with Frank Willemse

for a social real estate pilot. Our involvement transcended out of the ambition to guide and facilitate a bottom up process amongst neighbourhood inhabitants.In case of the new Hommel a piece of 60’s real estate is getting repositioned in the livelihood of its neighbours.
