Collage spring 2012 ARCH1353 This exercise examines the traditional notions of collage, and if we begin to use this as a visualization tool, such collages can then inform and create new dialogues within the subject matter. As you have learned from the lecture, the collage, as a formal definition, is an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a potential for a new whole or a didactic conceptual perception. The goal of this exercise is to successfully convey high level concepts through the use of collaged visualization. Examine: Note the properties of the given board dimensions (11x17). Collagespring 2012ARCH1353

This exercise examines the traditional notions of collage, and if we begin to use this as a visualization tool, such collages can then inform and create new dialogues within the subject matter. As you have learned from the lecture, the collage, as a formal definition, is an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a potential for a new whole or a didactic conceptual perception.

The goal of this exercise is to successfully convey high level concepts through the use of collaged visualization.

Examine:Note the properties of the given board dimensions (11x17). You will be investigating images and developing a concept that you wish to express. Choose your images wisely as they will have a direct impact on the overall collage effectiveness.

Procedure:You will be creating a collage of several images (overlay, blending, cut, assemblage ect..) in conjunction with “negative space” masking.

Example:

1. For this exercise, you will need a minimum of 5-8 images. Each image must be at least around 1000x1000 resolution size. Anything less will reduce the quality of your assignment so pay attention to the image size. After each image is se-lected, you will need to open them individually in photoshop and adjust the resolution to 300 ppi. By default, most images that are downloaded from the internet is around 72 ppi, so you have to adjust them before you start assembling them together.

2. In Photoshop: Open new file, canvas dimensions must be 11x17 (inches) at 300 ppi.

3. In Photoshop: Open your images into PS5 and properly organize your layers. To insert your individual collage images into PS5, go to “FILE” then “PLACE.” This will bring up a dia-logue box asking to select the file you wish to insert. Browse to the file you want to use then say OK. PS5 will then insert the image onto your canvas and will ask you to place and size the image as you wish. After you done moving or scaling the image, press ENTER. Remember to RASTERIZE the layers you just inserted by right clicking and the layer and selecting “Rasterize layer.”

4. To create the negative space mask, cut out the object you wish to use by using the lasso tools, quick selection, magic wand or refine edge tools you have been shown previously. Once you have the object you wish to cut out selected, delete the selection so that you can see through the cut out to the other images below. While the selection is still visible, right click in the selection and choose “select inverse” to then select the rest of the image. When you have the inverse selected, go to EDIT then FILL and choose a solid color from the drop down menu to color in the inverse selection.

The negative mask can also add an additional level of depth to your collage concept by either reiterating the conceptual elements you are putting together, or even depicting a juxta-position between collage and mask. For example, assembling depictions of war inset within a negative mask of the peace symbol.

5. In Photoshop: Once you’ve completed your collage, save file as a JPEG and PSD format.

7. In Illustrator: You may need to insert a colored box under-neath your text as needed. However if you are using a solid fill , you may be fine with just clear, readable text.
