Born in Sarawak, Rapheal Scott Ahbeng is one of the most renowned abstract artists from Borneo. Educated in the Bath Academy of Art, UK, Rapheal is known for his distinctive and recognisable style through his signature brush strokes and vivid colour. This unique palette and brush stroke allows the artist to explore the subtle tonal variations which makes up the abstract landscape, a fusion of what is real and imaginary to the artist. This has won him recognition as he has received First Place for the Sawarak Shell Open art competition in 1959, 1982, and 1983.

Dzul Afiq’s love for arts was instilled at a young age by his mother, who is an artist herself. He pursued his passion for arts and obtained a Diploma in Graphic Design and Multimedia from Limkokwing University in 2006 and Bachelor’s in Graphic Design Technology from Curtin University, Australia in 2008. Along the way he won the Student Excellency Awards for both his final years. Having had stints with established creative agencies, it is in 2011 that Dzul Afiq decided to enroll for his Masters in Fine Arts from the prestigious Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) which he has graduated with the Bronze Award. It is in UiTM where Dzul Afiq established himself as a serious upcoming artist. Juggling between lecturing and studying, Dzul Afiq managed to find time to paint and it has not been without recognition. In the space of two years, he has been invited to participate in no less than 9 exhibitions. The more notable ones include PWTC open exhibition (2012) and 2 Man Show exhibition by Artiseri at Seri Pacific Hotel (2015) as Malaysia representative with Indonesian notable artist.

Nasirun’s paintings do not simply depict comprehensible scenes, but rather are usually intertwined personifications or animations of his thoughts and quests. He mentions that often he paints to make sense of his concerns. Therefore, there is little sense in trying to understand rationally what he is try-ing to convey in his art works. His message is meant to be conveyed through senses and emotions. The Javanese characteristic is very strong in his works. At a glimpse others could directly see his works with a strong Javanese culture background. He adopts very interesting themes in his works. He always tells stories or folk tales in paintings. Some say his works are horrifying, while actually they embrace a very high sense of humour and allusion as well. He is very skilled in developing plural figures, enabling us to see various figures in one figure. He never uses the same figure to draw the same subject. Various figures sometimes appear in a mess but in an interesting shape. He compiled them into a solid, biting and stunning continual scene that invokes viewers to understand what he means.

Born in Garut, December 17, 1927. Popo Iskandar started paint-ing in 1944. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Besides being an artist, he is also an art observer and writer. In 1980 he received an art award from Indonesian Government. He has participated in many exhibi-tions in Indonesia as well as overseas. Popo Iskandar is known for his paintings surrounding subjects such as chickens, cats, and tigers.

For Popo, the artistic process is no different from the cultural pro-cess, that is, it is a long process of study. Every painting is like a reflection. It is an integral part of every one of Popo’s efforts of the past, the present and the future. One of Popo’s works is not a record of what he has seen, but rather an interpretation of what he has observed through subject matter. Popo’s repetitive themes are not merely duplicates his ideas, but an accumulation of his endless exploration towards his rich experiences. The source of his idea of cats is not the form of the cat, but rather its involvement in various situations and conditions which stimulate his ideas and imagina-tions. Repetitive theme of cats, chickens and leopards probably has become Popo Iskandar’s main contemplation in reflecting the es-sence of cats, nudity or even mystery of nature.

After graduating, he continued his studies in École Nationale Superieure des Beaux- Arts, Paris in 1968. Ceaselessly promoting the richness in Malaysian arts and culture into the international scene, Nai Tong is one of the few Malaysian artists who have contributed the history of Malaysian art. In fact, he never hesitated in sharing art knowledge and a great mentor of many successful artists. Nai Tong is also a prolific artist with many exhibitions in Malaysia and abroad. Terrace and Terrain is a testament to Dato’ Tajuddin Ismail’s talent and versatility as it essentially combines an array of techniques. At first sight it is apparent that it is a landscape painting but upon closer inspection one will see the blend of techniques used to construct this piece. The clouds are painted in an expressionist manner where the colour shades gives the perception of movement and depth and as we move down the canvas down the horizon, the painting transposes into abstraction, a form so commonly associated with Tajuddin. The transposition appears so seamless and it is helped by the layering of colors which slowly reveals one another before finally unveiling itself. While the composition is representative of terrain, the colour hues are more telling. Shades of red, orange, and green are used to represent the lush, tropical, and bountiful terrain, which our country is built on. In the middle of it all, drawings appear, drawings that not only contribute to the complexity of this piece and have deeper underlying meaning. A true artist, Tajuddin, believes that art is a combination of both painting and drawing and that both have to appear coexist harmoniously in sync with one another.

Tajuddin Ismail is a multi talented artist. After obtaining his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Universiti Teknologi Mara(UiTM), he studied Graphic Design at the Art Centre College of Design, Los Angeles, (USA) in 1974 and subsequently pursued his post- graduate in Interior Architecture at Pratt Institute, New York. This wide array of education has broaden Tajuddin’s perspective and often it is reflected in his work. He has been awarded for the prestigious Salon Malaysia, National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur (1979) as well as the Malaysia Design Council (1994) and receiving an Honourable Mention for the Philip Morris, Malaysian Art Awards (1994).

A homage to the Essence of Culture (EOC) series, Awang Damit has come a long way from the days as a struggling artist to where he is today. Coming from a fishing village in Kuala Penyu, Sabah, Awang Damit has always paid tribute to nature, with every work trying to convey the relationship of man and nature. Awang Damit’s breakthrough was the EOC series where today it commands prices that even Awang Damit himself couldn’t imagine fetching back then. Inspired by the late Syed Ahmad Jamal, the ex Telekom Malaysia technician took 10 years to complete the EOC series juggling between work and painting doing so. Payarama Ingatan EOC which is Awang Damit’ latest series is telling of the artist itself. While the series bares all the elements that makes it an Awang Damit piece, its hues has taken on a different shade. Appearing in more vibrant colours than before, it is reflective of an artist who has come a long way to be where he is now.

Awang Damit is one of the most recognized abstract expressionists in Malaysia. He graduated with honours from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Fine Arts in 1983 and was awarded the Best Student award that year. He then obtained his Masters in Fine Arts with the Catholic University of America, Washington D.C. in 1988. Dr Foo Yong Kong graduated from Malaysia Art Institute in 1970 majoring in oil and Chinese ink paintings. Since 1972, he spent more than a decade abroad drawing inspirations and refining his art. Dr Foo has had numerous group and solo exhibitions around the world; amongst them are the Binnual Exhibitions in Italy (2003), Tokyo (2004), Korea (2005), and Beijing (2005). Presently, Dr Foo is the president of the Malaysian Contemporary Chinese Painting & Calligraphy Association. The signature style of Dr Foo incorporates both Eastern and Western philosophies into a distinctive yet harmonious art form. His artwork mostly is based intrinsically on the elements of wind and water; his paintings have demonstrated the interactions of ‘qi’ (unseen inner essence) with different natural land masses like mountains, forest, seas. Practicing abstract-expressionism over the years, his paintings have evolved from a representational arrangement to a much spontaneous form reflecting the artist’s thought and emotions.

Born in 1970 in Klang, Selangor, Yap Chin Hoe has been a full time artist since he graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Arts in 1991. Chin Hoe’s artistic talent was apparent from a young age, having spent a great deal of time in learning European and American art, he embarked on an experimental journey with oil and acrylics in the later years. Chin Hoe has won many awards which included a first prize in an art competition held in in conjunction with Estee Lauder Breast Awareness Campaign 1996. The poetic still-life paintings by Yap Chin Hoe, has positively contributed towards enriching the Malaysian art scene today. All his works are painted with great attention to detail, often concentrating on the beauty and value of the treasures. The realistic elements of the work, Still Life with Bowl I & II, was rendered using the traditional techniques of oil painting on canvas. The extreme intricacy and fine detail emphasises the illusion of tactile and spatial experience.

This series of charcoal drawings prints were done portraying the residents of Intan Life Zone’s shelter programme. The artist chose to draw these individuals, many of whom are ex- Intravenous Drug Users (IDU), and/or HIV positive, to put real faces to some of those most forsaken and willingly over-looked by mainstream society.

The subjects themselves elected to be portrayed, braving the stigma attached to their condi-tion. The portraits are a joint effort by the artist and the Life Zone residents to help them to reaffirm their sense of self and to reconnect with the wider community. Magnificently rendered, these works are commanding, frank and beautiful, bringing us up close to individuals who meet prejudice on a daily basis quite apart from their own pain.

Chong Hon Fatt, born 1941, is an impressionist painter with his own instantly recognisable style. While the impressionists emphasises the changing qualities of light, from dawn to dusk, Hon Fatt chose to devote himself to the brilliance of the sun. His streetscapes of Penang are notable for their rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colours. Hon Fatt is a master of dramatic highlights and shadows. His most outstanding paintings are those with an astoundingly rich array of colours, light and dark pigments interplaying with each other, and creating dramatic tension.
