Sometimes – on a damp, cold, darkwinter’s evening – it can be hard tosummon up the energy to put onyour coat and make your way tothe theatre. So over the next threemonths the Eastgate is offering awhole selection of daytime delights,as well as the usual twilight treats,to help make the winter a littlebright and better.

For music-lovers, there are twoSunday afternoon concertspresented by Music in Peebles.The first, in January, features thedynamic Navarra String Quartetplaying Schubert, Ravel and PeterisVasks. Then in February there’sthe Patron’s Concert hostedby violinist Gina McCormick, withpianist Nigel Clayton and some ofthe best young talent from theScottish Conservatoire.

Drama buffs can enjoy a series ofthree short plays on Wednesdayafternoons in February and March,each accompanied by a light lunchbeforehand. Themes of love, regret,families and feminism are exploredin a tasty trio of one-act dramasby JM Barrie, Terrence Rattigan andHarold Pinter, produced by RaptureTheatre Company.

Daytime dance is another option –with a lovely family show calledW-hat About? presented by FuoraDance Company in February; andthen a selection of original piecesdevised by young Borders dancersfor The Evie DouglasChoreography Challengethe following month.

Sir Michael Strang Steeldiscusses the complexbusiness of managingPhiliphaugh Estate.

Sir Michael will first trace thehistory of the Estate fromRoman times to 1888, whenthe land was sold by theMurray family to WilliamStrang Steel.

Turning to the present, he willexplain the workings of thehydro station, powered by twoArchimedes screw turbines onthe Ettrick Water, theintroduction of underwatercameras so that people in theVisitor Centre can view salmonand other river creatures belowthe cauld, the construction ofthe café and the restoration ofthe walled garden.

The popular Traquair Choir,directed by Julie Harvey,performs a mixed programmeof music and song.

Traquair Choir was founded in2014 after a Hogmanay ceilidhbrought Elaine Heron and Julietogether. Today, over fiftymembers travel from all overTweeddale to make music ,sing to a high standard andhave fun. The choir sings arange of styles in unison andharmony; classical, worldmusic, folk, jazz and pop.

John Buchan’s most famous novel – The 39 Steps – hasinspired generations of film makers since 1935 whenAlfred Hitchcock cast Robert Donat as Richard Hannay.In 1958 the role was taken by Kenneth More and in 1978Robert Powell became the mining engineer trying to averta political assassination intended to trigger World War I.

This is an opportunity to see all three classic films. Each,with very different interpretations of Buchan’s greatadventure story, will be introduced by John Buchan’sgrand-daughter.
