FINDINGS AND ANALYSISThere are 5 auto million rickshawpullers in India.

95% of rural migrants andunemployed men pull rickshaws toearn their bread on a daily-hire basisand continue that way throughouttheir lives.

ContOn an average day, they made Rs. 2 00 - 4 00 , out of

which they paid Rs. 5 0 to the owner, spent Rs. 2 0 - 4 0 on alcohol and/or tobacco and Rs. 5 0 - 8 0 on food andthe rest they used on paying loans or saved the

money.many of them had a rental apartment. The rest of them are having very small slums or slept under thebridges or the rickshaw garages, used public toilets,skipped meals if failed to make enough money on anyday, and surprisingly, one of them mentioned that hepreferred having alcohol than food.

ContThe only way for them to transfer money totheir loved ones in their respective villageswas through local travelers who came tothe city from their villages to collect moneyfrom them. Obviously, such moneycollectors charged for their services.Whenever such people came to the city,these Rickshaw pullers borrowed moneyfrom the local moneylenders. One grouprelied on a manager of a local motel, andthe other group relied on an owner of a teashop. They viewed these moneylenders assaviors and had high regards for them

CONCL U SIONAuto rickshaw pullers in varanasi city drive

rickshaw about 2 0 -3 0 days in a month andthey work for 6- 10 hours in each working

day.it shows that they are quite concernabout their work.Most of them like to work more in day shiftthen night shift.the number of autorickshaw pullers which drive on differentroute is almost same as those autorickshaw pullers who drives rickshaw on asingle route.

ContThe average per day income of a rickshawpuller is around 3oo rs .Most of the rickshaw pullers dont havetheir own rickshaw so they have to hiertheir rickshaw and for this they have togive 5 0 rs per day as the rent of rickshaw.None of the rickshaw puller have the higherqualification which they also dont requireto drive a rickshaw, most of are educatedtill middle school and some of them arealso illiterate.

ContMost of the rickshaw pullers are havinglarge size families and they dont evenknow about the family planning.Most of the respondents are having theelectricity connection.those who haveelectricity connection they prefer televisionto entertain their self and rest of themprefer to go cinema hall or some otherssources for enjoying.

ContAlmost 8 0 % of the respondent like to sendtheir children to school,and most of themlike to prefer government schools for theirchildren.many of them had a rental apartment.
