ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS - The fire horn that
alerts first responders to a potential blaze
has come under fire itself, so to speak.
Residents have been complaining to the
mayor and council saying that the device the
Fire Department uses is too loud and creates
a disturbance.
At the March 15 meeting, the governing body
said they would consider allocating $3,750,
to possibly purchasing a new technology or
other ways of updating the siren.
The council estimates a replacement siren oralternative technology could cost
$75,000-$100,000. The $3,750 is a 5
percent down payment.
"The fact is it's a nuisance," said Council
President Robert Agresta on March 16. "The
complaints have been going on for a long
time with respect to the siren."
Agresta estimates the siren is used 720 times
a year.
The siren is tested each day at 6 p.m.
"We need to have a system we don't have to
test all the time, capable of public address
and reliable for the Fire Department," Agresta
said.
Councilwoman Carrol McMorrow said putting
$3,750 toward updating the fire siren
"prudent" decision.
Numerous residents complained about the
fire siren's noise at the governing body's
March 10 meeting. One resident questioned
why the alarm needs to be tested on a dailybasis. Another resident said his children get
upset when the siren sounds.
Mayor Joseph C. Parisi Jr., said on March 16
that there are new sirens, which are less

invasive then the current fire sirens and
might have other functionalities.
Andrew Nikow, a member of the Fire
Department, told a story about how hereceived a page about a fire while another fire
fighter did not receive the notification. Nikow
said the fire fighter knew about the fire
because the siren sounded.
"One way or another something has to be
done with the blasting of the fire system" said
Agresta, adding that there needs to be a
system that does not affect the lives of
residents, while at the same time, alerting the
department that there is a fire.
Parisi, said it is up to the Fire Department to
decide what technology best suits the town.
"...we're not here to come up with schematics
and the bid process," Parisi said on March 15.
"I have full confidence that the fire chief will
come back and present us with updated
technologies that will ensure public safety of
our residents," said McMorrow on March 16.
