ABSENCES: TEACHERS, PARAPROFESSIONALS The computerized substitute teacher finder system is to be used to report absences. The Substitute Finder is a voice communication system where you call the computer directly and identify yourself by Social Security number or you may use the on-‐line system from any computer, either at home or at school. The system will lead you through a series of steps including a way for you to leave specified instructions for the substitute. It will automatically call substitutes based on your priority listing. You will receive a handout with specific instructions for using the system. Remember it is your responsibility to know how to use the system. When the system is out of order, the confidential secretary Ms. Stephanie Jordan is responsible for calling substitutes. Should you need a substitute, and the system is not working, please call Ms. Jordan on her cellular number before 9:00 P.M. If it is necessary to call in the morning, do so between 5:45 and 6:25 A.M. You are asked not to make special arrangements with a substitute to cover your position without letting Ms. Jordan know beforehand. Ms. Jordan’s cell phone number is (954) 661-‐0509. ACCIDENTS: STUDENTS, EMPLOYEES If a student is injured while at school, the teacher or adult who was in charge of supervision at the time of the accident must complete an accident report. Any accident should be reported, however minor it may appear. Accident report forms are available in the front office. The form should be completed before the end of the day and given to the Information Management Technician, Mrs. Mara Valerio.
If an employee is injured while at school, an accident report must be completed as soon as possible. The Bookkeeper, Ms. Geneva Randall, will provide you with a packet of information outlining the procedure to be followed to obtain medical treatment.
ANNOUNCEMENTS Opening exercises and morning announcements will be broadcast daily over the closed circuit television channel 5 (WCES-‐TV) at 8:05 A.M. Students will do daily announcements with periodic class presentations. Morning announcements provide current and updated information important to both students and staff. Please include watching the morning announcements in your daily schedule.
Other announcements will be made using the school-‐wide intercom system at 1:50 P.M. In order not to interfere with the flow of instruction, only very important or emergency announcements will be made during the instructional day.
ASSEMBLIES/PROGRAMS Assemblies are conducted as an extension of our curriculum. We will have programs periodically and utilize outside resources whenever possible. The principal must approve all assemblies before scheduling. Once approved, dates are to be placed on the activity calendar by Ms. Jordan. When assemblies are held and your class is invited, you are to accompany them and supervise during the program. Classes scheduled for the first show should report to the cafeteria at the time listed. If your class is scheduled for the second show, please wait for an all-‐call from the office, since many programs have audience participation and may run over the allotted time. Please note assemblies in your plan books.

ATTENDANCE, STUDENTS It is the teacher’s responsibility to keep accurate attendance records for classroom use and for transmission to the office. Attendance must be taken daily. Students must report to the office for a late pass to class after 8:15 A.M. Completed attendance should be in Pinnacle by 8:45 A.M. daily.
Collins Elementary participates in the Broward Truancy Intervention Program (BTIP). The District, in conjunction with the State Attorney’s office, runs this program. After five unexcused absences, a letter is sent from the State Attorney’s Office requiring a conference with the principal, to avoid being prosecuted. If the absences continue, we will refer the child to the social worker. After ten days of unexcused absences, the State Attorney’s Office will begin prosecution proceedings. Since all of this is based on unexcused absences, please make sure that any notes sent in by parents telling why their child was absent are sent to the office so that Mrs. Valerio can excuse the child. A parent has up to two days after the absence to notify the school.
Students are not permitted to leave campus from the classroom, for any reason, at any time during the school day. Only clearance from the administrative office allows students to leave campus. Please direct parents to the office if they come directly to your classroom to pick up a child.
ATTENDANCE, TEACHERS & STAFF Each district employee is contracted a specific number of days. In order to maintain a record of days worked and for proper compensation, each employee is to write the time and initial the logbook kept in the front office. This is to be done upon arrival each day. Before you initial the page, please make sure it has your name on it. The office manager will use this record to report your time worked. Don’t forget to initial the log each day.
BELL SCHEDULE Bells ring to signal occurrences on campus. The bell schedule is as follows:
1st Bell 7:30 a.m. Students are allowed on campus for breakfast or to report to their designated SMART Start room.
2nd Bell 7:55 a.m. Teachers admit students into classroom. Teachers pick up students from the SMART Start room.
3rd Bell 8:00 a.m. Classes start. All students should be in class. Students are admitted and marked tardy without a late pass until 8:15 a.m.
4th Bell 2:00 p.m. Dismissal bell. Students should be in line at the dismissal site before the bell rings.
AUDIO-‐VISUAL EQUIPMENT The Media Clerk checks out AV equipment to teachers. A wide variety of equipment is available. You are encouraged to make use of this equipment to enhance the basic curriculum through a multi-‐media instructional approach. Equipment checked out is your responsibility and should be maintained properly. In the event that anything requires repair, please inform the Media Clerk.

CAFETERIA Do not send your students to the cafeteria on their own. Walk with your class to the cafeteria door. Students are expected to enter the cafeteria in line quietly. The teacher aides on duty in the cafeteria will supervise students during their thirty-‐minute lunch period. Please pick up your class on time.
Cafeteria Rules: 1. Use Low voices. 2. Use manners. 3. Remain in your seats. 4. Raise your hand to ask for help. 5. Clean tables
It is important that teachers reinforce appropriate cafeteria behavior. Periodic reviews of cafeteria procedures are encouraged.
CELL PHONES AT SCHOOL Florida Statue 1006.07 was amended to require that each school district’s Code of Student Conduct indicate that students are allowed to possess wireless communication devices (cell phones and pagers). The impact of this is elementary students will now be allowed to bring cell phones and pagers to school and must follow the same “turned off and out of sight” rules previously established for secondary students.
Teachers and staff members are reminded that placing or receiving calls by cellular phone during teaching time/student contact time is prohibited. Cell phones should be placed on “silent alert” or “vibrate” mode during class time. Ringing phones create distractions for students and teachers. Plan to return calls during your lunch or planning time.
CHILD ABUSE/NEGLECT REPORTING In order to comply with School Board policies and Florida State Statutes, any suspicion of child abuse or neglect must be reported. Since these reports are dealt with anonymously you may want to call the hotline directly or you may report your suspicion to the guidance counselor, assistant principal or the principal. The Child Abuse Hotline number is 1-‐800-‐96A-‐BUSE.
CLINIC If any student is too sick to remain in class, the teacher should send him/her to the office with a clinic pass. If it becomes necessary for the student to be sent home because of illness or injury, the office staff will call the parents and the teacher will be notified. Law prohibits school personnel from giving any form of internal medication, including aspirin, without written authorization from a medical doctor or the Health Department. Teachers may not dispense any medication. Students are not allowed to bring medication to school to self-‐administer. In the event of medical emergency, the office is to be notified immediately. Any accident must be reported, however minor it may appear. The person in charge of the area where the accident occurred must fill out an accident report form. The form should be completed before the end of the day and given to Mrs. Valerio.

COMMITTEES Committee assignments are normally made at the beginning of the school year. Additional committees are organized as needed to promote a cooperative approach to problem solving, needs assessment, or identifying goals and objectives. Teachers are encouraged to be involved in the school’s operation by participating on committees.
COMPETITIONS/CONTESTS/FAIRS Throughout the year various competitions are available for students to enter. Teachers are encouraged to make their students aware of these competitions and to promote their participation.
CONFERENCES Teachers should hold a minimum of two conferences each school year with the parent(s) or guardian(s) of each child. Conferences can be a great help in furthering home-‐school communication and understanding.
Conferences in person are always most desirable, however, there are times when it is impossible for parents to come to school. In these cases, a telephone conference will be acceptable. Results of the conference should be recorded on a conference form, signed by the parent and teacher, and placed in the student’s cumulative folder. Another teacher, Guidance Counselor, Literacy Coach, Assistant Principal, or Principal should be invited to conferences involving unusual concerns. This is suggested for your benefit.
Conferences should be scheduled before or after school, with the exception of afternoons that are reserved for faculty and grade level meetings.
CRISIS IN CLASSROOM 1. Deescalate the student, if possible. 2. Call the office by phone or call button “CRISIS”. 3. Remove students, if necessary, to class next-‐door, primary and secondary option. Students
must be trained on procedure. Designate a student in your class who will be responsible for making a phone call or to push the call button alerting the office of a crisis in __________’s classroom.
4. Receiving teacher notifies the office that Ms. or Mr. __________’s class is in my room and there is a crisis in his or her room.
STUDENT DATA FOLDERS A student data folder is to be maintained for each student. NEVER allow a student to carry a student data folder anywhere. Student data folders are available from the office, and should be signed out by the teacher. Do not leave student data folders in an unsecured location while in your possession. Information contained in the student data folder is considered confidential. Parents seeking to view records should be referred to the office. Teachers are encouraged to review student data folder contents prior to the start of the students’ school year. This will provide a background of information in regard to socio-‐emotional and academic levels. CUSTODIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/CLASSROOM MAINTENANCE Our custodial staff is responsible for maintaining our building in a clean and attractive manner. Any need for maintenance or repair should be requested on the Maintenance Request form

available in the office. This should be completed and turned in to the office, who will forward it to Mr. Rodney Aaron, Head Facilities Serviceperson. It is the responsibility of the teaching staff to establish a clean and attractive environment for learning that encourages proper respect for neatness and order. In general, teachers should not place nails, staples, screws, etc. in the walls. Also, masking tape defaces the paint when used directly on a painted surface. Please use the bulletin boards provided to display student work. Students should pick up trash from the floor at the end of each day. If you know that you are planning a project that may require extra cleanup time for the custodians, please notify them in advance so that they can plan their schedules accordingly. Of course, you are to make every effort to have students clean up behind themselves throughout the day. Each year, during our Annual Inspection, we are cited for dust accumulation. Our custodians need your help in this area. Please do not place items on countertops, T.V stands, or on open shelves that cannot be moved easily for dusting. Items placed in containers make dusting easier and quicker for custodians. At some grade levels, student helpers may be used to dust display areas. I will be closely monitoring all areas for dust accumulation this year. DISCIPLINE Teachers are to develop classroom procedures to establish and maintain a safe, serious learning environment for all students. These procedures should follow School-‐Wide Positive Behavior Plan guidelines and must be taught and modeled, so that students know exactly what is expected of them. Your classroom procedures, consequences, and rewards should be written large enough to be seen clearly by students from all points in the room and posted in a prominent place. Parents should receive a copy of your classroom procedures the first week of school. Parents will also receive a copy of our School-‐wide Positive Behavior Plan in the Parent/Student Handbook, which is available on Collins Elementary School’s website during the first week of school. REFERRALS Students should be sent to the office only after classroom consequences have been unsuccessful. It is imperative that, from the first day of school, you resolve to enforce compliance to your established procedures. Any child who, because his/her actions, stops the teacher from teaching and other students from learning should be given a referral. Students should not be sent to the office for disciplinary reasons without a referral. Referrals must be filled out completely or the child will be sent back to the classroom.
A guidance referral should be considered if a child continually misbehaves. The behavior may stem from emotional or developmental problems, which may be handled with appropriate interventions before administrative action is taken. The Broward County Code of Student Conduct Handbook is provided for all students at the beginning of each school year and explains the policies and procedures established for all schools in Broward County. Each parent must sign and return the form from the booklet stating that they have read and understand the rules. It is extremely important that each child returns this signed form, also. The BCPS Code of Student Conduct Handbook is also on the Collins Elementary website. DISCRIMINATION POLICY
77
Broward County Schools do not discriminate on the basis of disability, race, sex, or national origin in hiring, employment, admission, and success to its programs, services, and activities or in the treatment of individuals in any aspect of its operation. DISMISSAL-‐STUDENTS Children are not to be dismissed early or released to the custody of anyone without clearance from the office. Students must be signed out by the parent or guardian in the front office before they can be released. Teachers will be requested via the intercom to send a student up for early dismissal. At dismissal time, students are to be escorted to the designated dismissal area by the teacher. Do not detain students in your classroom for any reason at the end of the school day (i.e., erase board, clean up, help the teacher, get homework). Students are allowed to remain with you after school only if parents have been notified at least one day in advance and have agreed in writing. Teachers are expected to escort students kept after school off campus once they are dismissed.
DRESS CODE Professional dress is strongly encouraged for all faculty and staff members. While a specific dress code is not set forth for teachers and staff, you are expected to look “professional” each day. Remember that we set examples for students by what we wear. As a rule of thumb, imagine the Superintendent coming in to visit your classroom unannounced today. Would your attire represent your professionalism? DUPLICATING Request for copies are filled within five school days. Place the item to be copied in Ms. Paulette Jackson’s mailbox along with specific copy instructions. Classroom printers are not intended to run sets of copies for your class. Please plan ahead so that your copies will be ready before you need them. Last minute request for class sets of copies will need the principal's approval. Please do not ask to have material run off for months ahead or for the entire year. This could deplete our paper supply and can result in waste, if your plans change.
***THE COPIER IN THE OFFICE IS FOR OFFICE USE ONLY*** Utilization of an abundance of photocopied materials is strongly discouraged. Teachers are encouraged to use the Promethean Board, overheads, charts, audio-‐visual aides, computers, manipulatives and other methods for instruction, to decrease the use of copies.
E-‐MAIL/VOICE MAIL Each member of the faculty and staff has been assigned an e-‐mail address. E-‐mail should be checked at least twice per day for important messages. Messages sent via e-‐mail should be job related. Remember that using e-‐mail is like sending a letter without an envelope – your message is available for anyone to read. Like e-‐mail, your voice mail should also be checked each day.

This form will be provided to each student early in the year and should be retained on file in the office for reference throughout the year. Teachers should make a copy and notify the office whenever changes occur.
EVALUATION -‐ TEACHERS, NON-‐INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF As required by School Board policy, you are being provided with a copy of the evaluation form, the criteria and competencies on which the evaluation is based. For instructional staff, these forms are available through the iObservation management system. Non-‐instructional staff may request a copy from Ms. Stephanie Jordan.
As indicated in the teacher’s contract, evaluations will commence after September 15. Teacher evaluations will be conducted per guidelines in the Master Contract.
Evaluations shall be conducted at the end of the school year for teacher assistants/paraprofessionals.
EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT EDUCATION CLASSES Students who attend exceptional classes, such as Speech, Specific Learning Disabilities, etc., must attend the class for the required time stated in the Individual Educational Plan (IEP). Teachers should send these students promptly and Exceptional Education teachers should document their attendance. This is essential for audit purposes. Students may not be kept out of these classes.
FIELD TRIPS Field trips are an integral part of the learning process and are encouraged when they are an outgrowth of classroom activities. Field trips should be planned cooperatively with your grade level whenever possible and must have the approval of the Principal. School Board policy dictates that one chaperone accompany every ten students.
The following procedures must be followed when planning a field trip: 1. At least six weeks prior to the scheduled trip, a Request for Field Trip form must be
completed and given to the Grade Chairperson, who in turn, will receive authorization from the Principal.
2. After receiving authorization, pick up a field trip packet from the bookkeeper and schedule the trip with organization, firm and/or owner of property being visited. Return completed forms to the bookkeeper.
3. Parents must give permission for their child to be away from school as a participant in an authorized field trip. Such permission shall be on an officially approved form. Permission forms are included in the packet.
4. Request for school buses must be made at least ten days prior to the event. This timeline must be strictly observed.
5. All money collected should be turned in to the bookkeeper each morning with attendance. Funds collected by teachers from students must be collected according to Broward County Standard Practice Bulletin auditing procedures. All money must be turned in to the Bookkeeper prior to the day of the trip. All money collected must be recorded on a Report of Money Collected form.
6. Field trips should occur only as an outgrowth of, or supplement to, some aspect of the curriculum.
7. Teacher judgment should be employed in deciding whether or not an excursion is desirable in terms of distance, expense and ease of supervision. However, the Principal will make the final determination for trips in the tri-‐county area, the Area

Superintendent for outside of the tri-‐county area. A school provided cell phone must be taken on each field trip.
8. No trip should be taken without proper teaching and planning in terms of purpose, procedure, and follow-‐up. Parent permission forms with a phone number where the parents can be reached must be in the office before departure and will remain on file in the school.
9. Remember, educational excursions are important, but when we take children away from the school we assume extra responsibility for their safety. Always be sure that the desirability of the trip outweighs the extra responsibility.
10. Students may not be denied the privilege of participating in field trips, social and/or extra-‐curricular activities without prior notification of reasons for possible denial.
11. Students may not be denied the privilege of participating in a field trip planned for the whole class based on an inability to pay.
FIRE DRILLS There will be ten (10) fire drills during the school year, the first one during the first week of school. Teachers will not always be notified of these drills. Procedures and expectations should be discussed with the students at the beginning of school.
Students are expected to leave the room in line and without talking. The teacher would be the last one to leave the room, keeping the class together, as the evacuation route is followed. The classroom door should be closed and the grade/roll book taken with you. Once in your designated waiting area, the teacher should check the roll to see that all students are accounted for. No one is allowed back into the building until the "all clear" bell is sounded.
GRADE BOOK Electronic Grade Books The electronic grade book will be used in lieu of the traditional paper grade book. Teachers will input a minimum of three (3) grades by the Interim Period. By the end of each quarter, the grade book will reflect a minimum of nine (9) grades for each subject. Standard operating procedures should be followed for incomplete make-‐up work. Grade books are not to be shared with parents in a manner that displays the grades of other students.
GRADE CHAIRPERSON RESPONSIBILITIES Grade Chairpersons are a vital and valuable part of the total school program. The duties and responsibilities assist the principal in providing a safe and positive learning environment.
The duties listed below are a partial representation of those required by administration for Grade Chairpersons: • Monitor lesson plans
SBBC SBBC 8/8/15 12:26 PMDeleted: Your grade book must contain all of the information necessary to justify any report given to a parent, or, if necessary, to a court of law. All marks must be recorded using the symbols approved by the School Board in Policy 5104. Numerical grading is not used in elementary schools in Broward County. It is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure that sufficient grades are recorded to justify a mark on a report card. A minimum of one grade per week per subject should be recorded.

The Guidance Counselor will coordinate the efforts of the school, special services and community resources, in meeting the needs of students, parents and teachers.
HALL PASSES Hall passes are required for all students when leaving the classroom unsupervised. A system of monitoring the time a child spends out of the classroom on a pass should be developed.
HOMEWORK The following guidelines will assure that homework activities result in a satisfying session for both parent and student: 1. Homework should be assigned daily. 2. Assignment should be on the student’s independent level. 3. Assignments should be no longer than thirty minutes. 4. Directions should be clear and precise. 5. Copies should be clear and readable. 6. Emphasis should be on strengthening basic skills taught in the classroom. 7. Homework should be checked by the teacher and at least one grade per week must
be recorded for reading, writing, and math. HOURS Teachers, teacher assistants, and paraprofessionals are contracted to work from 7:30 A.M. until 3:00 P.M., unless otherwise assigned. It is extremely important that these hours are observed. Should you need to leave campus early, you must complete a Request to Leave Early Form, for approval by the Principal. The forms may be completed and submitted in advance if you know that you need to leave early. You must sign out in a sign-‐out book kept by the secretary. Do not leave campus without signing out. Student hours are from 8:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Students are allowed on campus for breakfast at 7:20 A.M. They will be escorted to the cafeteria by an adult staff member. Students not eating breakfast are allowed on campus at the first bell at 7:30 A.M. They are to report to the Smart Start room assigned to his or her grade level. Students should not be dismissed early unless they are signed out through the front office. INTERIM REPORTS
Interim reports are an opportunity to inform the parents of your concerns prior to the end of the marking period and a way of enlisting their cooperation. An interim report MUST be created for all students experiencing difficulty no later than midway between marking periods. Remember, an interim may be sent anytime during the grading period that students begin experiencing difficulty.
Interim reports for students performing satisfactorily are recommended as an additional means of school-‐home communication. A positive note from the school enhances public relations.

LESSON PLANS Plan books are an important part of documentation and all teachers must maintain a complete up-‐to-‐date plan book. All subjects taught must be indicated. The exact organization of the plan book is the concern of the individual teacher, however, it must be clear and detailed should a substitute be called in for your class. Specific books and page numbers should be indicated as well as what students are expected to do. Specific time schedules, seating plan, and any other pertinent information should be included.
All teachers are asked to be uniform in the following: 1. Cover: Teacher’s name and school year 2. First Page: Schedule of the week’s activities, bell schedule and lunch time 3. Plans: Overall plans for each subject, with times A folder of information for substitutes should be kept on your desk or with your plan book.
Each teacher is required to keep the plan book up-‐to-‐date and completed for the upcoming week. Plans may be checked at any time by the Principal, Assistant Principal or by the Grade Chairperson. Plan books are to be available readily for use. It is the teacher’s responsibility to get his/her plan book to school if he/she is absent. Plan books are to be left at school in your mailboxes over major holiday breaks.
MAILBOXES Teachers/staff should check their mailboxes at least twice a day, once in the morning and at the end of the day. All telephone messages taken will be placed in your mailbox. Only urgent or emergency messages will be delivered to your room via intercom or messenger. Mailboxes are not to be used as a storage area. Materials allowed to accumulate in mailboxes will be discarded after proper notification.
MATERIALS/SUPPLIES All orders for materials are to be coordinated by your Grade Chairperson. In this way, we can combine and/or match orders for similar items. All orders must be approved by the Principal and be placed through the Bookkeeper, using the proper form.
Classroom supplies may be requested through the bookkeeper. A form has been developed listing commonly requested items. The order must be handed in by Wednesday to receive the supplies on Friday. Every effort will be made to fill orders for the number of items requested. Do not request more than two months worth of any item that you use regularly.
Please, do not purchase anything and expect to be reimbursed without prior approval.
MEDIA CENTER Classes are held in the Media Center, for a portion of the day, to instruct students in the development of library and research skills and to develop an appreciation of literature. In addition to scheduled class time, the Media Center is open for independent study. MEETINGS Regular faculty meetings, grade group and grade chairperson meetings are important for coordinating activities in the school.
Whenever possible, a faculty meeting will be avoided if a memo or e-‐mail to teachers/staff will suffice. One Monday each month is reserved for faculty meetings. However, additional meetings

may be called if the need arises. General faculty meetings will begin in the Media Center at 2:15 P.M. and last no later than 3:00 P.M.
Teachers are required to attend reviews and staffings for all ESE students (speech and varying exceptionalities) in their class. Teachers will be notified of these meetings in advance and are expected to notify the ESE specialist in advance if a conflict exists.
MONEY COLLECTION No teacher shall collect money from students without receiving prior approval from the principal. After approval is given, the bookkeeper will provide the proper forms for receiving money. All money collected should be turned in to the Bookkeeper, accompanied by the proper forms, at the end of each day.
PARENT/TEACHER ORGANIZATION Teachers are encouraged to join the PTA and to attend PTA meetings, whenever possible. A teacher will be selected to represent the faculty at monthly PTA Executive Board Meetings.
We need to encourage our students to get their parents to be involved in PTA activities. Through the combined efforts of parents and teachers, we can see the support of our school programs grow.
PARTIES All class parties must be scheduled with the approval of the Principal. Should parents wish to bring in cupcakes for birthday recognition, students may take them to the cafeteria at lunchtime. Remember, all food served at parties must be purchased. No home-‐baked goods are allowed.
PARTNERS IN EXCELLENCE The School Board of Broward County, in conjunction with the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce and the Junior League, has established a program that fosters school-‐community partnerships. In this program, schools are paired with businesses to share human and material resources.
Throughout the year we will be working cooperatively with our Partners in Excellence on various projects. You will be notified of special activities involving our partners. PRIDE This year we will be working toward developing school spirit and pride with new students and encouraging continued school spirit and pride with returning students. To this end, we will have school-‐sponsored activities such as Honor Roll Breakfast, Extra Effort Club celebrations and other special activities to foster school spirit. Collins Elementary School is an outstanding school; let’s make sure we share this with others. PROMOTION/RETENTION Board Policy 6000.1, clause D, delineates the criteria for promotion and retention. Students must meet minimum performance expectations at each level in Kindergarten through fifth grade in order to move to the next grade level. Students who are identified as substantially deficient are required to have mandatory remediation and a Progress Monitoring Plan. This plan

indicates the instructional strategies and interventions, which will enable students to improve their academic standing. Non-‐English speaking students may be permitted to demonstrate mastery of skills in their native language. Exceptional Education Students: The staffing/review committee will determine instructional levels for exceptional education students. This level must be documented on each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). If there is no information regarding the mastery levels of skills on the student's Individual Education Plan, it will be assumed that to be promoted, the student will master regular basic skills. Instruction shall be focused on ensuring that students demonstrate mastery of the Sunshine State Standards. PROPERTY PASSES Equipment purchased with School Board funds may not be taken off campus without prior approval. Once approval is given, a property pass must be completed and signed by the Principal. You retain a copy of the pass to be signed upon return of the equipment. Under no circumstances should equipment be taken from campus without a property pass being completed. If you are not sure you need to fill out a pass, ask! The property passes may be obtained from our Technology Support, Mr. Fred Ripper. PUBLIC RELATIONS The most productive atmosphere is established when home and school work together. With this goal in mind and for good public relations, regular communication with parents is recommended. If you would like the Guidance Counselor, Literacy Coach, ESE Specialist, or Principal to be involved in a conference(s), please let us know. We will be happy to help with any problems that may arise. Please retain samples of student work to show parents, so they may see the progress their children have made.
RAINY DAY PROCEDURE If it is raining hard, or a heavy rain is imminent, at the end of the day, students should be held in the classroom until the rain passes. Please await direction from the office on how to proceed during prolonged downpours. Children should not be permitted to call home on a rainy day until they have waited at least 15 minutes to be picked up. Do not allow students to use the phone to call home during an electrical storm (thunder and lightning).
An understanding should be established between parents and students regarding procedures to follow in advance of these situations. REPORT CARDS Report cards are issued every nine weeks. A student must be in attendance in a Broward County public school twenty-‐five days to receive a grade.
Report cards will be issued on the following dates: November 12, 2015 January 28, 2016 April 14, 2016 June 9, 2016
SCHOOL BOARD’S MAJOR SYSTEM PRIORITIES
SBBC SBBC 8/10/15 1:27 PMDeleted: (See Appendix)
1515
The School Board of Broward has established the following system priorities. Please make these a part of your essential knowledge.
1. Improving student achievement and school effectiveness 2. Addressing growth 3. Embracing, celebrating, and demonstrating diversity 4. Improving student/staff safety and security 5. Increasing student and staff accountability 6. Expanding partnerships 7. Attracting, retaining, and training the best teachers, principals and support staff 8. Utilizing technology to improve student achievement, teaching, and staff productivity 9. Empowering parents and community through participation
STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE CODE BOOK The BCPS CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT HANBOOK will be provided on www.browardschools.com at the beginning of the school year. All Broward County School Board policies related to student conduct are delineated in this book. Students and parents are required to sign and return the inside front cover of this book, indicating they have reviewed the policies therein. Make sure you have a signed cover for every student in your class. The signed covers must be collected and retained in students’ student data folders until a new cover is collected for the new school year. SUPERVISION Students should never be left unsupervised at any time. Classes are to be escorted to special classes (Physical Education, Band, Media), the cafeteria, assemblies, etc. Do not send students by themselves.
DO NOT SEND STUDENTS TO THE PARKING LOT TO RETRIEVE ITEMS FROM YOUR CAR. Delivery trucks, maintenance trucks, garbage trucks and cars pose a hazard to students who sometime are not cautious. If you need to unload large numbers of items, please stop at the front of the building to unload your car, then proceed to a parking spot.
It is particularly important to supervise students closely on the playground. Teachers should remain in the immediate area and directly supervise all outdoor activities. In this way, we can avoid accidents. Do not take chairs to sit down in while children are on the playground. You need to be up and around watching for problems or unsafe activity that might develop.
TEMPORARY DUTY AUTHORIZATION (TDA) TDA forms are required anytime anyone is not at his/her regular work location. Field trips and workshops require a TDA to be filed at least two (2) weeks before the trip. All TDA’s for out of county/state must be approved two weeks in advance. TDA forms are also required when a substitute teacher is employed for a regular teacher on temporary duty assignment. Once completed, TDA forms are to be submitted to the Office Manager for proper coding and administrative signatures. Incomplete TDA forms will not be approved. Before handing in a TDA, please be sure that the following steps have been completed:
1. Obtain approval from administration to attend the workshop, etc. 2. Call Sub Finder or go on-‐line to hire a substitute teacher (when needed). Place the
job number on the completed TDA form. 3. Attach a copy of the workshop notification or other documentation to support the
need for a TDA. (This step allows correct budget coding).
A sample form is contained within the handbook appendix.

TEACHER ASSISTANTS Teacher assistants play a vital role in the instructional process and are to be actively involved in the school program. The assignment of teacher assistants’ duties will be made by the principal, based on budgetary restraints, identified needs, and teacher input.
The teacher to whom the teacher assistant is assigned is responsible for their supervision. A schedule should be developed and monitored by the teacher. If a problem occurs, the teacher should discuss it with the teacher assistant. A plan of action should be developed to rectify the problem. If the concern continues, the grade chairperson should assist in finding a solution. A written record of all discussions should be maintained. In the event the situation continues after the intervention of the grade chairperson, the principal should be involved.
Teacher assistant duties shall include, but not be limited to the following: • Assisting with reading groups • Working with individual students • Working with assigned groups • Scoring papers • Keeping records • Reinforcing skills needing remediation • Assisting teacher in preparing instructional materials • Enforcing school-‐wide discipline plan, when necessary • Cafeteria duty • Monitoring hallways • Acquiring needed training
The main job of a teacher assistant is to assist the teacher with student instruction. They are not to be made solely responsible for the class for extended periods of time. Teacher assistants are not to contact parents about students' behavior or schoolwork without the knowledge and approval of the teacher. TELEPHONES Each classroom and work area in the school is equipped with a telephone. Calls should be limited to business or personal local calls at a time when the teacher does not have class responsibilities. A log of calls made to parents is to be kept by each teacher. Having students place calls to their parents/guardians during class time should be avoided. Should you receive a phone call during your scheduled teaching time, a message will be placed in your mailbox. Calls will not be forwarded during scheduled teaching times. You will however, be notified immediately of any emergency calls.
The phone lines are restricted and you will not be able to make long distance calls or directory assistance calls from school phones. You may place long distance calls for school business, with appropriate documentation and prior approval, from the principal's office.
VISITORS/ VOLUNTEERS All visitors must report to the front office and receive a visitor’s pass before proceeding on campus. This includes family or friends visiting your classroom. Former students must also
1717
be checked in through the front office. A visitor’s badge will be provided and should be worn while on campus.
Anyone observed on campus that is not a School Board employee should be referred to the office and the office should be notified at once. All School Board employees not assigned to this site must display a picture identification badge.
Parent volunteers must sign the Volunteer sign-‐in book and pick up a name badge before going into a classroom. They should return their name badges and sign out when leaving. Please ask your parent volunteers to record their hours daily in the office. In this way, we can accumulate hours toward the Golden School Volunteer Award.
WEAPONS/DRUGS The Broward County School Board has instituted a strong weapons and drug policy. Basically, it says that any student who brings a weapon or drugs to school may be suspended or expelled from school. All teachers must explain this policy and stress the seriousness of these infractions.
WITHDRAWAL-‐STUDENT When a teacher learns of a student’s plans for withdrawal, the following steps should be followed: l. Notify Mrs. Valerio, so the transfer papers can be prepared 2. Collect all books or other school property 3. Investigate any library debts 4. Complete student records (report card, if appropriate, and student data folder) 5. Return the completed student data folder to Guidance/I.M.T for final check within
three days. The contents of this handbook will be updated as needed.
