  • Notes ON THE PROGRAMThe title of this piece comes from thename of an imaginary circus news-paper. The work reflects Fillmores

lifelong interest in circuses and hisexperiences while touring with five dif-ferent big top shows.

Angels in the Architecture was commis-sioned by Kingsway International, andreceived its world premiere at theSydney Opera House on July 6, 2008,by a combined band of young musiciansfrom Australia and the United States, conducted by Mathew George. The

work unfolds as a dramatic conflictbetween the two extremes of humanexistenceone divine, the other evil. Theworks title is inspired by the SydneyOpera House itself, with its halo-shapedacoustical ornaments hanging directlyabove the performance stage.

    HENRY FILLMORE The Circus Bee

Subtitled A Chorale Prelude, this compo-sition is based on a beautiful RussianOrthodox chorale. Pavel Tschesnokoff(18771944) was a Russian choral

conductor, teacher, and composer withmore than 400 choral works to his credit. This composition retains the clarity ofharmony that characterized his works.

    PAVEL TSCHESNOKOFF Salvation is Created

The Finale to the Fourth Symphony is atumult of vivacious gaietyas Tchaikov-sky himself designated: the joy of see-ing others happy and jolly. TheRussian folk melody, though introduced

very near the beginning, in the course ofthe principal theme itself, is sufficientlyindividual to serve as a subordinatetheme. The rhythmic treatment of thispopular tune is ingenious.

PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Finale from Symphony No. 4

Canticles of Light was commissioned in 2000 by Winchester Music Club incelebration of the 75th anniversary ofits foundation by Sir George Dyson. The piece is comprised of three ancientLatin hymns that were in widespreaduse at least as early as the 10th century. The first two are evening hymns thatask for Gods protection and comfortthrough the night. The third hymn is a

song for the morning, anticipating therenewed strength and hope that the daywill bring.

The work is written for chorus andsmall orchestra, with a significant partfor a choir of trebles or young voices, who in the two outer movements chantplainsong-like phrases above the mainchorus. There are further parallels with

  • In Memoriam had its origin as a single-movement choral work. A couple ofyears ago, the Corpus Christi Choralehad a silent auction fundraiser. For mycontribution to the auction, I offered towrite a new choral piece for theChorale on a text of the buyers choice. The winner of my item, Elvia Carranza, requested that I set a poem written byher mother entitled Pstuma Ofrenda,or Final Offering. I was enchantedby the poems expression of the desirefor remembrance after death, as well asthe musical imagery evoked in the text. After I began working on the composi-tion, I was approached by DennisRichardson about collaborating on aCarnegie Hall performance with DCINY,including writing a new extended work tobe performed on the program. Since theprogram was near Memorial Day, I real-ized that the text I was currently settingwould be ideal as one movement of amulti-movement work. I selected addi-tional texts from the Catholic Requiemand the poetry of George Eliot.

The first movement, In Paradisum, con-tains both text and musical materialfrom the Gregorian chant setting of theRequiem mass. I wrote harmonies withethereal structures to evoke the souls

journey into paradise. The rhythmicstructure captures the unmetered flow ofchant, emphasizing the importance ofnatural speech declamation.

The original single movement became thesecond movement of this extended work.I used a traditional Spanish chord pro-gression as the centerpiece of the work, moving voice parts down stepwise at dif-ferent times to create dissonances evokingthe word duerma or sleep. The mezzosoloist is the voice of the poems author, displaying a reverent wistfulness.

In the final movement, The ChoirInvisible, Eliots text refers to the invis-ible souls that still sing in our lives collec-tively after their individual deaths. I usedmore traditional harmonies in this move-ment to create a more American choralsound in the vein of Aaron Copland orRandall Thompson. The duerma themeof the second movement returns, but inreverse, signifying the souls journeyfrom sleep to eternal life in our memo-ries. The chant material from the firstmovement also reappears and is inter-twined with the new themes to unify thethree movements of In Memoriam.

ROSS C. BERNHARDT In Memoriam (World Premiere)

the ancient and timeless art of plain-song in the scale-wise melodic contoursand rhythmic independence of the mainchoral writing, whilst, at the other endof the musical timeline, Chilcotts expe-rience as a member of the KingsSingers is readily apparent in his skillfuluse of close-harmony techniques. His

expert synthesis of these seemingly dis-parate elements has resulted in a musi-cal language of considerable expressivepower, eloquently conveying in thesethree short pieces a reassuring messageof hope and renewal.

  • No llores, paloma ma or Do notweep, my dove tells the tale of twoyoung lovers whose fate is shattered bybetrayal. Martinez weaves togetherthree popular melodies of Cantabria to

express the emotions of their story. Themusics mood ranges from gentle andsweet, to chaotic and powerful, beauti-fully expressing the tumult of the younglovers relationship.

GUILLERMO MARTINEZ No llores, paloma ma

Where Flames a Word uses text by thepoet Paul Celan, which he translated intoEnglish from the original German. Thefirst and third movements are settings ofthe poems Before Your Late Face andI Know You, You Are the DeeplyBowed. For the second movement,

Smith used an excerpt of a prose pieceby Celan, titled Conversation in theMountains. Two cousins meet on a hiking trail, and their seemingly incon-sequential conversations reveal verydeep truths about themselves andabout the world.

KILE SMITH Where Flames a Word

Miserere, Latin for Have Mercy onMe, is a work that holds deep personalmeaning for La Rocca and is one of themost challenging pieces he has written. It recounts a biblical episode in the life of King David, in which he is caught in a heinous crime. King

David expresses great remorse anddeep repentance in the first part of thetext, and then as things evolve, hebegins to experience a sense of peace.King David realizes that admitting hiscrime also opens himself to the possibilityof forgiveness.

    FRANK LA ROCCA Miserere

A Song of Joys is based on WaltWhitman poem of the same name fromhis collection Leaves of Grass. Thepoem is a vast description of all of lifesjoy, and extols the virtues of nature, love, and nostalgia. Whitman praisesthe lives of farmers, soldiers, mothers, firemen, and people of all back-grounds, uplifting their everyday workinto a celebration of humanity and

possibility. The poem is rich withimagery, and captures the beauty ofsimple acts, such as boiling a lobster orrowing on a river. In setting the text tomusic, Omiccioli chose excerpts that hefelt best summed up Whitmans inspi-rational message. The music reflects thejoyful mood of the poetry, yet embracesthe pensive side of Whitmans work as well.

    The Choir Invisible

Oh, may I join the choir invisible Of those immortal dead who live again In minds made better by their presence; live In pulses stirred to generosity, In deeds of daring rectitude, in scorn For miserable aims that end with self, In thoughts sublime that pierce the night like stars, And with their mild persistence urge mens search To vaster issues. So to live is heaven: To make undying music in the world, Breathing a beauteous order that controls With growing sway the growing life of man. So we inherit that sweet purity For which we struggled, failed, and agonized With widening retrospect that bred despair. Rebellious flesh that would not be subdued, A vicious parent shaming still its child, Poor anxious penitence, is quick dissolved; Its discords, quenched by meeting harmonies, Die in the large and charitable air, And all our rarer, better, truer self That sobbed religiously in yearning song, That watched to ease the burden of the world, Laboriously tracing what must be, And what may yet be bettersaw within A worthier image for the sanctuary, And shaped it forth before the multitude, Divinely human, raising worship so To higher reverence more mixed with love

  • That better self shall live till human Time Shall fold its eyelids, and the human sky Be gathered like a scroll within the tomb Unread forever. This is life to come Which martyred men have made more glorious For us who strive to follow. May I reach That purest heavenbe to other souls The cup of strength in some great agony, Enkindle generous ardor, feed pure love, Beget the smiles that have no cruelty, Be the sweet presence of a good diffused, And in diffusion ever more intense! So shall I join the choir invisible Whose music is the gladness of the world.

    Before your late face

Before your late face,a loner wandering betweennights that change me too, something came to stand, which was with us once already, untouchedby thoughts.

Conversation in the MountainsAnd it was quiet in the mountains where they walked, one and the other.Youve come a long way, have come all the way here...I have. Ive come, like you.I know. You know. You know and see: The earth folded up here, folded once and twice and

three times, and opened up in the middle, and in the middle there is water, and thewater is green, and the green is white, and the white comes from even farther up, fromthe glaciers, and one could say, but one shouldnt, that this is the language that countshere, the green with the white in it, a language not for you and not for mebecause,I ask you, for whom is it meant, the earth, not for you, I say, is it meant, and not formea language, well, without I and without You nothing but He, nothing but It, youunderstand, and She, nothing but that.

I understand, I do. After all, Ive come a long way, Ive come like you.I know.

I know you, you are the deeply bowed

To go back to the place where I was born,To hear the birds sing once more,O to go back, O to come alive!O to clap your hands! O to sing and dance! O to shout!

O to come alive! To emerge and be of the sky!Of the sun and moon as one of them.Rolling of thunder, darts of lightning! Flying of clouds!O to have life henceforth a poem of new joys!As we sing the most jubilant song of joy! O to shout!
