    Truguard Range General Inormation

    Deects and solutions

Bittiness: Small specks and blotches on what

should be a good painted surace. Usually

caused by dust, broken paint skins or

    dirty equipment.

    Bleeding: Discolouration caused by the

underlying colour seeping through the newly

painted surace. Could be due to previous

coatings such as dyes and creosote or

    perhaps nicotine stains.

Blistering: Results rom poor adhesion o the

paint to the surace. Normal causes are damp

in timber or moisture in the atmosphere.

Brush marks: In heavy bodied paints it is

dicult to avoid brush marks. Otherwise they

are usually the result o poor application.

Cissing: Occurs with poor adhesion when an

old previously painted surace hasn't been

rubbed down or is so hard that it is impervious

to the new coat. Seen as small depressions or

    holes in the paint surace.

Curtaining, running or sagging: Usually dueto bad application or poor brushing.

Discolouration: May be caused by surace

    contaminants or atmospheric attack.

Eorescence: Seen as white urry crystalline

deposits on new plaster and cement. Occurs

    as the surace dries out.

    Fattening and eeding: Recognised as

thickening o the paint, making it eventually

unusable. Caused by mixing o paints.

Flaking: Similar to blistering, faking is caused

by moisture under the surace or by painting in

    damp conditions.

Flashing or sheariness: Glossy streaks or

patchiness observed when viewing a surace

rom a shallow angle. Caused by aulty

application or by the paint setting too quickly.

    Grinning: Seen where previous undercoat

    shows through.

Loss o gloss: Can be due to moisture at the

time o, or slightly ater, application eg dew,

porous undercoat or grease under the surace.

Mould and mildew: Usually occurs under

damp or humid conditions. Dierent locations

    produce dierent growths.

    Saponifcation: Occurs when solvent-borne

paints are aected by alkalis in the presence

    o moisture.

Wrinkling: Usually occurs with gloss nishes

on exterior work where a rapid surace skin is

ormed. Wrinkling is most severe when very

    thick lms are applied.

Bittiness: Take the utmost care during both

    preparation and application. Ensure suraces

are smooth. Strain the paint i necessary. Avoid

dusty conditions and use clean equipment.

Bleeding: I possible, strip o the old paint. I

this is impractical, seal the surace with Patent

Knotting or Johnstone's Aluminium Wood Primer.

Blistering: Ensure that the paint adheres

eectively to the surace. Remove all

deective paint. Let each coat ully harden

    beore urther application.

Brush marks: Keep paint to an even

consistency and brush out to a thin, even

coating. Cross brush and lay-o with very

    light strokes.

Cissing: Try vigorous brushing. I this doesn't

work, wash o new paint and rub down with

White Spirit. I the new surace has dried, rub

    down and re-nish.

Curtaining, running or sagging: Brush out

well, cross brushing and laying o evenly.I the deect has occurred in old work, rub

    down thoroughly beore re-painting.

    Discolouration: There is no eective

    treatment other than re-painting.

Eorescence: Do not seal. Remove by dry

    brushing rom time to time.

Fattening and eeding: Do not mix dierent

brands o paint. Where thickening is slight the

problem can be rectied by use o thinners.

    Flaking: Solvent-borne nishes: Remove all

paint and start again. Water-borne nishes:

Scrape o all loose paint and seal with a

    solvent-borne primer.

Flashing or sheariness: Thin paint to ease

brushing. Use a roller or apply paint quickly.

Do not touch ater "initial set".

    Grinning: Use recommended undercoats.

Avoid over thinning o the top coat.

Loss o gloss: Allow the surace to harden.

    Rub down and re-paint.

Mould and mildew: Ask your local Johnstone's

outlet or advice on the particular location in

    which the problem is occurring.

    Saponifcation: Prevent by using

Leyland Alkali Resisting Wall Primer. Where

    saponication has already occurred,

strip, wash, allow to dry and re-paint.

Wrinkling: I the paint is suciently hard, rub

down and re-paint. I the lm is still very sot

scrape o the gloss coat, clean with White

    Spirit and re-paint.

    General Inormation

    Surace preparation and priming

All work should be carried out in compliance with BS6150:2006 Codeo Practice or Painting o Buildings. The importance o preparationo the surace prior to painting cannot be over emphasised. Nosurace should be painted unless it is in a sound, irm, clean, dry

condition and completely ree rom dirt, dust, oil, grease, rust andelorescence. All loose and laking materials should be removedby scraping, wire-brushing or other suitable methods. Normallydirty suraces can be adequately cleaned with water and soap,or detergent. Heavy deposits o grease or at can be removed byswabbing with sugar soap. Previously painted suraces should berubbed down to provide a suitable key or subsequent coats opaint. Usually rubbing down is best carried out using wet and dryabrasive paper and water. This helps to avoid scratching the surace, and prevents the generation o dust. When dry sanding, wear asuitable dust mask. Surace imperections such as holes, cracksand dents should be made good with a suitable iller. Specialprecautions should be taken during preparation o pre-1960s paintsuraces over wood and metal as they may contain harmul lead. For urther advice contact Technical Advisory.

    Surace preparation and priming wood

Because o its cellular structure, wood is capable o holding largeamounts o water. Correctly seasoned wood contains no excessmoisture and should not be exposed to any contact with moistureor water beore it is eectively protected by priming.

Moisture contentPreerably the moisture content o wood, when painted, should benear to the level at which it will stabilise in service (usually 10-12% orinterior woodwork and 15-18% or exterior woodwork). I woodwork ispainted whilst the moisture content is high, the paintwork is likely toblister or lake and there is a likelihood o wet rot or ungal growthproblems arising. This also applies to any previously painted woodworkwhere bare wood areas are exposed, due to ailed paint coatings.

Preservative treatmentsIt is now common practice to actory apply treatments whichprevent rotting or insect damage. Unless suppliers advise otherwise,it can be generally assumed that most o these treatments canbe over-painted, providing moisture content is below 18% andany residual solvent has evaporated. For urther advice contactTechnical Advisory, on +44 (0)1924 354100.

Unpainted sotwoodEnsure the wood is dry and ree rom oil, grease or other contaminantsand dust o thoroughly. Apply a knotting solution to all knots andresinous areas, coating suiciently beyond the deect to ensureeicient sealing. Liberally apply a suitable primer and brush wellinto the surace. Ensure the inal coat is smooth and even.

    Previously painted sotwood

Remove all deective paintwork by suitable means Rub down withine waterproo abrasive paper and rinse thoroughly. Apply knottingsolution and prime bare areas as or unpainted sotwood. Dispose oremoved material saely.*

Suggested primers or sotwoodLeyland Wood Primer, Leyland Acrylic Primer Undercoat,Leyland All Purpose Primer.

Unpainted hardwoodEnsure that wood is dry and ree rom oil, grease and any othercontamination. I any delay occurs between preparation andpriming, it is a sensible precaution to wipe over the surace withWhite Spirit, due to the oily nature o some hardwoods. Disposeo cloths contaminated with White Spirit saely. Liberally apply asuitable primer. Ensure the inal coat is smooth and even.

Previously painted hardwoodSpot prime all open joints or other deects o the remainingpaintwork. When dry, stop with a suitable hard stopper to preventwater penetration. Wash all remaining painted suraces with waterand detergent to remove any contamination. Rub down with inewaterproo abrasive paper and rinse thoroughly.

Suggested primers or hardwoodLeyland Wood Primer (non-oily hardwood), Johnstones AluminiumWood Primer.

Wood treated with creosotePainting over creosote is not recommended unless the creosoteis well weathered. Prepare the surace ensuring it is dry and reerom grease etc. As discolouration or "bleeding" is likely to occur, normal paint systems cannot be used. The sur ace should besealed with Johnstone's Aluminium Wood Primer, or JohnstonesQuick Dry Primer Sealer. A second coat o primer should be

applied i the irst coat discolours. Certain Johnstone's Woodcareproducts such as Exterior Shed and Fence Treatment can beapplied direct to weathered creosoted timber.

Microporous systemsTimber to be over-coated with a microporous system such asLeyland Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss should be given a pre-coato clear wood preservative beore applying the correct systemas directed.

    plaster and masonry

Walls o new buildings generally contain an amount o water andchecks must be made to determine the degree o moisture present.

I possible decoration should be delayed until excess moisture hassuiciently reduced. All suraces, new or old, should also be checkedor any indications o organic growths, e.g. algae or ungi and wherenecessary sterilising methods such as Johnstones Sterilisation Washsolution must be used prior to painting.

PlasterRemove any surace contamination and make good any crackswith an appropriate iller. Remove elorescence by dry brushing asit appears and until it ceases. In order that eective drying takesplace, ensure good ventilation. Normally priming should be carriedout using a permeable emulsion paint. Leyland Contract Matt isrecommended in this instance.*

Concrete, brickwork, cement rendering, masonryThoroughly brush down with a sti bristle brush to remove any dustor surace contamination. Repair deects and cracks with theappropriate materials. On porous or riable suraces apply onecoat o Truguard Stabilising Masonry Primer or, i the surace isvery sound, apply inishing coats o the required coating direct.

Wash down theremaining areas to remove dirt etc. Rub down previously glosspainted suraces with waterproo abrasive paper to provide akey or subsequent coats, rinse with clean water and allow to dry.Prime any bare areas as suggested or the particular substrate.*

Fletton common bricksPaint adhesion problems can occur on this type o external brick. Thepresence o kiss marks, dark, smooth and sometimes slightly glazed

areas can result in paint ailures in less than two years. In addition atendency to orm powdery surace deposits o elorescence canalso cause subsequent ailure. All paint types are aected andthick ilms can ail extensively due to the added eect o trappedmoisture. External rendering, carried out in accordance with BS5262,can provide satisactory adhesion or paint systems. Sand-acedand rustic Flettons can be painted satisactorily.

    building boards

Cementicious boards and sheetsObserve the requirements o the current regulations and

best practice codes beore carrying out any work. Owing to thealkaline nature o cement, priming with Leyland Alkali Resisting Primeris necessary i a solvent-borne coating system is to be applied.Priming may not be necessary i water-borne products are to beused. Where condensation is likely to occur in cavities or roo spaces,it is advisable to prime the backs o boards or sheets. In very wetenvironments it may be necessary to use non-saponiiable paintssuch as Leyland Truguard Pliolite Based Masonry.

Plasterboard and other paper-aced boardsPlasterboard is extensively used in dry lining systems and jointingcompounds, paint treatments etc should be as per manuacturerrecommendations. Paper-aced compressed straw slabs and woodbased boards etc do not normally present painting problems.

    Fibre hardboards

Hardboard does not provide any problems in painting. The suracedoes not need to be rubbed down but should be clean and reerom grease. Prime as or untreated ibre insulating boards.

Fibre insulating boardsFibre insulating boards may be pre-treated with ire retardantchemicals. I treated, prime with Leyland Alkali Resisting Wall Primer.Where a solvent-borne inishing system is required, prime withLeyland Alkali Resisting Wall Primer or Leyland Acrylic Primer Undercoat. In areas o condensation it may be necessary to paint the backo ibre insulating boards to minimise the risk o warping. Untreatedboards can be painted with water-borne paints such as LeylandVinyl Matt emulsion without the use o a primer.

Polystyrene sheets and tilesThe manuacturer's painting recommendations should be ollowed.

Clean o any dust and apply any Leyland water-borne paintproduct. On no account should solvent-borne products be used.

    Surace preparation and priming metal

Galvanised iron and steelNew galvanised suraces are usually very smooth, making irmadhesion o paint diicult. I they are allowed to weather or someweeks this eectively etches the surace providing a more suitable

substrate or painting. As it is sometimes necessary to apply primerdirect to unweathered galvanised suraces, care should be takento remove all traces o oil and grease etc. Degreasing with WhiteSpirit using clean cloths, is oten very eective. Follow by thoroughlywashing with detergent and water, rinse well and allow to dry.Dispose o cloths contaminated with White Spirit saely.

New galvanised iron and steelCompletely remove any oil or grease, etc. Apply a liberal coat oJohnstone's Mordant Solution allowing the solution to darken themetal. Wash o any surplus solution, allow to dry, then prime withLeyland All Purpose Primer or a suitable primer rom the Johnstone'sPerormance Coatings range.

Weathered galvanised iron and steelClean the surace to remove all traces o oil, grease and anyother contamination. Remove any rust back to bare metal andtreat with Johnstone's Mordant Solution as required. When dry, prime immediately with Leyland All Purpose Primer or a suitableprimer rom the Johnstone's Perormance Coatings range.

Iron and steelIron and steel require very thorough surace preparation andprotection with a suitable and eective paint system. Poorpreparation results in ineective paint protection. The mosteective preparatory methods or cleaning iron and steel areshot blasting, grit blasting, lame cleaning, impact needles andsome orms o chemical cleaning. Hand cleaning methods aregenerally less eective and any scraping or wire brushing mustbe as thorough as possible. It is imperative that there should beno delay beore priming clean iron and steel as exposure to theair can cause surace deterioration in a very short time. Priming

within one hour o preparation is advised.

New or unpainted iron and steelRemove all oil, grease, by solvent cleaning methods. Removeany rust or millscale by the most eective means to produce asurace suitable or painting. Ensure the surace is dry and applya coat o suitable primer, brushing well into the grooves andapplying liberally to angles and edges. Recommended primersare Leyland All Purpose Primer or any suitable primer rom theJohnstone's Perormance Coatings range.

    General Inormation

    Surace preparation and priming metal

Previously painted iron and steelI the whole surace is in a poor condition, remove existing paint witha proprietary paint remover and prepare as or unpainted iron andsteel. Generally sound paintwork should be checked or any loose

or laking material, which should be removed down to bright metal.Prime all bare metal immediately with Leyland All Purpose Primer ora suitable primer rom the Johnstone's Perormance Coatings rangeand allow to dry. Thoroughly degrease remaining areas prior to theapplication o any urther coating.

Pre-primed iron and steelEnsure that the primer has been correctly and eectively appliedto the surace. Rectiy any surace deects by cleaning and spotpriming. I the surace has not been properly primed, or millscaleand rust are present, remove by the most eective means andtreat the surace as or unpainted iron and steel.

Bitumen coated iron and steelNew bitumen or bituminous materials should not be painted exceptwith urther coats o bitumen, owing to the risk o bleeding or suracecracking. It may be possible to paint hard or weathered bituminouscoatings provided a suitable sealer, e.g. Johnstone's AluminiumWood Primer is applied to reduce the risk o bleeding. Ensure allsuraces are clean and dry and that any bare areas have beenspot primed with a suitable primer.

Non-errous metals:copper, brass and similar alloysThese metals are diicult to paint as no eective key is provided orpaint adhesion. They are best let unpainted. I painting is essential, lightly abrade the surace with waterproo abrasive paper and cleandown with White Spirit. Dispose o cloths contaminated with WhiteSpirit saely. Prime with Leyland All Purpose Primer or a suitableprimer rom the Johnstone's Perormance Coatings range.

Non-errous metals:aluminium and aluminium alloysAluminium has a smooth even surace, containing a white oxidelayer; it is thereore necessary to prepare the sur ace to provide asuicient key. Aluminium should always be kept rom contact withany caustic solutions or substances. Prepare bare metal by lightlyabrading with waterproo abrasive paper using White Spirit asa lubricant. Clean down with White Spirit and dry thoroughly.Dispose o cloths contaminated with White Spirit saely. Primewith Leyland All Purpose Primer or a suitable primer rom theJohnstone's Perormance Coatings range.

    Spray equipment recommendations

Throughout Leyland's product inormation and packaging, reerence ismade to suitable application methods. In addition to application bybrush and/or roller many Leyland products can be applied by spray.

There are basically two methods o spraying, conventional or airspray and airless spray. The ormer is perhaps the most well knownand utilises compressed air to atomise the paint via an air spray gun.Although the inish obtained with most paints is good, the methodis somewhat slow and wasteul o materials. It is most eective oncomplicated items such as old style cast-iron radiators and louvredoors. The equipment used consists o an air compressor (minimumoutput 4 cu. t/min at 40 psi), a pressurised container, hoses and anair spray gun.

The method o spraying known as the airless system has nowbeen in use in this country or many years and, thereore, shouldbe amiliar to most decorating irms and maintenance painters. The speed o operation is up to 200 square metres per hour. ManyLeyland products can be applied by airless spray, which uses apump to orce paint at high pressure to a spray gun and througha suitable nozzle or tip.

Conventional sprayLeyland products indicated as suitable or application by spray orconventional spray can be applied by this method as ollows:

    Water-borne products

For conventional spray application, most water-borne productswill require thinning up to a maximum o 10% with clean waterto produce best results. Use a normal type pressure containerwith approximately 25-40 psi luid pressure, an air spray gun witha 1.8 or 2.5mm diameter nozzle and a suitable air cap with25-60 psi air pressure.

    Solvent-borne products

For Health and Saety reasons we do not recommend the sprayapplication o solvent-borne paints.

Airless sprayLeyland products indicated as suitable or application by sprayor airless spray can be applied by this method as ollows:

Use tip sizes and luid pressures as indicated. Spray pattern widthsshould be between 6" (15cms) and 12" (30cms). The airless sprayunit should be capable o delivering a minimum o 750ml perminute. Thoroughly mix all products beore use and i ambienttemperatures dictate, thin up to 5% with clean water.
