The Healthy City Data Taxonomy
Taxonomy History & Today
Data Taxonomy
As more data was added, the partnership (United Way of LA, USC School of Social Work, Children’s Hospital LA, 211 LA County) developed the first taxonomy.
Additional data was added to the taxonomy. Some new categories were created.
Data more than double in size, and a review and update of our taxonomy is needed.
1.0 3.0 4.0HC Website Version
Original website had less than ten subcategories of data, so users could easily view all of them.
We receive continuous requests to modify portions of the data taxonomy, so that data is both easier to locate and grouped with similar data.
Our data holdings branch out into new issue areas in which we lack formal experience (ex. environmental issues).
2.0 & 2.0 Plus
Variables added
Our goals and the Statewide Partnership
Statewide Partner issue area experts review the request and recommend courses of action (ex. where to add to/change taxonomy, or no change needed).
Healthy City staff test Statewide Partner recommendations with users.
We hope to implement a process where issue area experts, users and staff can collaborate to determine that best way to organize our data, so that it is accessible and intuitive. We hope this group can review and make decisions on requests to modify the taxonomy, and can determine where new data should fit in the taxonomy.
Healthy City Staff
Request Statewide Partners
Healthy City Users
STEP 1
STEP 2
STEP 3STEP 4
Users make a request for a taxonomy change, or a new dataset needs to be added to the taxonomy.
Healthy City staff implement user-approved Statewide Partner recommendations.
Homework : Evaluate the location of Data Categories within TargetsWe will be “card sorting” Healthy City data categories within targets, to evaluate their placement in the taxonomy. We will send you a link to the study that we have set up. Click on the link and drag and drop categories to targets to complete. You can create new targets for categories by dragging a category to an empty place in the center; you can also rename targets by clicking on their titles. Refer to the HealthyCity.org taxonomy for data details.
When you click on the link, your study will look like this.
Ex. I dragged and dropped Population Characteristics under Demographic.
Ex. I dragged and dropped Civic Participation onto a blank part of the center, and named the target “Community Life.”
Questions to Consider…
Process?• How does this process seem? • Do you have any suggestions to make it better?
Experience?• What has been your experience with the taxonomy? • Have you found data you’ve been looking for? • Were there any datasets you feel are misplaced?
