Littlestone, recognisedasbeingoneothe top100courses

inEngland, isa championship linkscourse laid out onthe

naturalundulatinglandbetweentheamousRomneyMarsh

and the English Channel inthe SouthEast corner oKent.

Thecoastlineenjoysauniquemicro-climatewhichmakesit

oneothedriestplacesinBritain.Thecourseispresentedin

superb condition throughout theyear and temporaryteesandgreensareunheardo.

LittlestoneGolClub hashostedmany championshipsand

hasalonganddistinguishedhistory.Wearejustiablyproud

obeingchosenonceagain,asaFinalQualiyingvenueorthe

2011OpenandaveryrecentreportbytheR&AAgronomist

statesthatthegreensaremagnicentandtheyaresomeo

thebestexamplesorm,trueandwellpacedputtinggreens

intheUK.

HISTORY

TheclubconstructedalinksontheLittlestonesiteasearlyas

1888anditwasonthiscoursethatHarryColtdistinguished

himselasaleadingplayerin1891.Butrespondingtotheclubswishoramorechallengingcourse,W.LaidlawPurves,a

LittlestonememberandthearchitectoRoyalSt.GeorgesGC,andDavidHerd,Littlestonesproessional,createdanew18

holesin1894thatcloselyollowthecoursewhichnowexists.

Thenewlayoutwasreadyorplayin1899.Furtherworkby

James Braid between1905 and1909 greatlyimprovedthe

bunkeringandplayingoptionsonmanyholes.

In1922-23Harry Colts thenpartner,AlisterMackenzie,wasinvitedtomodernisethelinks.Manyohisrecommendations

caused heated controversy among themembership as his

designortwoothestrongestholesonthecourse(16thand17th)werenotput inuntil 1931.Theworkwascompleted

underthesupervisionoJ.F.Abercrombie,thedesigneroThe

AddingtonGC.

Today we can attribute the ollowing holes, arguably the

strongestonthecourse,toMacKenziesinfuence:2,3,6,8,14,16,17and18.WorkcontinuedonthecourseatertheSecond

WorldWarwithbunkerimprovementsonholes3,4,5,11and

12anda change intheline othe18th suggestedby gol

architect,FrankPennick.

RecentlyPeterAlliss andDonaldSteeladvisedon venew

back tees and some bunker modications. These changes

were incorporated into a new Blue Course which at 6676

yards providesmore thansucient challengeor even thebestgolers.
