FIRST LESSON: Jeremiah 28:5-9R: The first lesson is from Jeremiah, the 28thchapter

5 Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the LORD, 6 and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the LORD do so; may the LORD make the words that you have prophesied come true, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the LORD, and all the exiles. 7 Yet hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the

hearing of all the people. 8 The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. 9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet.”R: The Word of the LordC: Thanks be to God

PSALM 119:153-160153 Behold my affliction and deliver me,    for I do not forget your law.154 Plead my cause and redeem me;    according to your promise, give me life.155 Deliverance is far from the wicked,    for they do not study your statutes.156 Great is your compassion, O Lord;    preserve my life according to your judgments.157 There are many who persecute and oppress me,    yet I have not swerved from your decrees.158 I look with loathing at the faithless,    for they have not kept your word.159 See how I love your commandments!    O Lord, in your mercy, preserve me.160 The heart of your word is truth;    all your righteous judgments endure forevermore.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 7:1-13R: The Second Lesson is from Romans the 7th chapter.

7 Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law

Page 5: christusclintonville.orgchristusclintonville.org/Bulletin 06-28-2020 930.docx  · Web viewCome and thy people bless, and give thy Word success, and let thy righteousness on us descend

of marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.

4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.

7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. 9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. 10 The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. 11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. 12 So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

13 Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGEStandGOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 10:34-42P: The Holy Gospel, according to Matthew, the 10th chapter C: Glory to you, O Lord

34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”R: The Gospel of our LordC: Praise to you, O Christ Be Seated

Page 7: christusclintonville.orgchristusclintonville.org/Bulletin 06-28-2020 930.docx  · Web viewCome and thy people bless, and give thy Word success, and let thy righteousness on us descend

1 The Son of God goes forth to war a kingly crown to gain. His blood-red banner streams afar; who follows in His train? Who best can drink his cup of woe, triumphant over pain; Who patient bears his cross below— he follows in His train.

2 The martyr first, who eagle eye could pierce beyond the grave, Who saw his master in the sky and called on him to save. Like him, with pardon on his tongue in midst of mortal pain, He prayed for those who did the wrong— Who follows in His train?

3 A glorious band, the chosen few, on whom the Spirit came, Twelve valiant saints; their hope they knew and mocked the cross and flame. They met the tyrant’s brandished steel, the lion’s gory main; They bowed their necks the death to feel— Who follows in their train?

4 A noble army, girls and boys, with men and women saved, Around the Savior’s throne rejoice, in robes of light arrayed. They climbed the steep ascent of heav’n through peril, toil, and pain.

O God, to us may grace be giv’n to follow in their train!

APOSTLES’ CREED P: Together with the saints of all times and places, we confess the one, true faith, using the words of the Apostles’ Creed:C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AmenBe SeatedPRAYERS OF THE CHURCHOFFERINGStandOFFERTORY PRAYER P: Almighty and merciful God, C: you open your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing. HYMN: We Sing the Praise of Him Who Died LBW #344 (tune 363)

1 We sing the praise of him who died, of him who died upon the cross. The sinner’s hope let all deride; for this we count the world but loss.2 Inscribed upon the cross we see in shining letters, “God is love.” He bears our sins upon the tree; He brings us mercy from above.3 The cross! It takes our guilt away; It holds the fainting spirit up; It cheers with hope the gloomy day and sweetens ev’ry bitter cup.4 It makes the coward spirit brave and nerves the feeble arm for fight; It takes the terror from the grave and gilds the bed of death with light;5 The balm of life, the cure of woe, The measure and the pledge of love,
