Turri Road Clean Up Scheduled for June 3 at 10:00am

Trinity UMC is the sponsor for one of our local scenic roadways – Turri Road. Turri Road is a narrow, winding five-mile stretch of road between S. Bay Blvd. and Los Osos Valley Road. In 2014 it was named #4 on Buzzfeed’s list of the most beautiful roads in the world. Our goal is to keep it that way. Approximately four times a year friends and family from Trinity spend a couple of hours picking up trash and other debris along the roadside. If you would like to join us, we recommend wearing sturdy, close-toed shoes, long pants and sleeves, gloves, and sunscreen, as there are insects and poison oak along the route. We meet in the parking area at S. Bay Blvd. and Turri Road at 10:00 a.m., then carpool to drop groups of volunteers along the route so that each group has a small area to clean. We provide water and snacks and we’re usually finished by noon.

Back in the Day… 7

To the Saints who are in Los Osos, It’s hard to believe that it is June already. June makes us think of graduations, the beginning of the summer holiday, picnics, and perhaps weddings… (the brides in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers sing, “For they say when you marry in June, You will always, always, always, be a bride.”) On the Central Coast June may make us think of summer, but it usually greets us with fog and cool weather. June is something different when one is a United Methodist pastor. June is the month when we feel we are probably safe from a move if we haven’t yet heard anything. If we have received a move it is the month of feverish preparation for that move and difficult and painful separation. (Unless something unforeseen happens I will return for another year at Trinity). And for all of us, moving or not, it is the month of Annual Conference. Once again it is the time to trek to Redlands where we trade our Los Osos June average high of 66 degrees for the Redlands average high of 81 degrees…and for some reason Redlands always strives to be above average.

While there has been a Methodist presence in California for over 150 years, this is the thirty-third session of the California-Pacific Annual Conference, which was formed in 1984 when the former Pacific and Southwest Annual Conference gave birth to two successor conferences, the Cal-Pac and the Desert Southwest Annual Conferences. I became a member of the Pacific and Southwest Annual Conference in 1981 and have been a member of the Cal-Pac Conference since its beginning. This is the second time I will be going as the clergy delegate from Los Osos, along with two lay delegates.

In my thirty-six years and counting, I have served the United Methodist Church under five Bishops: Bishop Jack Tuell, Bishop Roy Sano, Bishop Mary Ann Swenson, Bishop Minerva Carcaño, and now Bishop Grant Hagiya. Over the years many things have changed while many others have remained the same. In “the olden days,” Annual Conference took five full days. This year it will take four. Annual Conference has always been full of meetings, reports, worship, “courtesies,” and reconnection. It seems that the amount of time we have allotted for consideration, discussion and yes, arguments, about various pieces of legislation has shrunk with each change in bishops. (It also feels as though the amount of time we devote to “courtesies” keeps growing). I don’t think that most of us know what to expect of Annual Conference this year. Bishop Hagiya will put his stamp on our proceedings. Whatever else happens, I am sure that we will spend time reflecting how we will respond to the various possible outcomes of the special session of the General Conference in 2019. It is a good feeling to know that our bishop is a member of “A Way Forward,” the special task force created by the last General Conference to propose ways that the Methodist Church may remain united in the face of controversy. All of this is to say that while we are rooted in the past, United Methodism is in a period of change, and none of us knows where we will be in a few years. The one thing I do know is that while the church is in our hands, the Church is in God’s hands…we may determine what will happen in Methodism, but God is still in charge of “the one Church, apostolic and universal.” Please pray for your Delegates, Pastor G, Bill Fairbanks, and Joe Asire, as we represent Trinity at Annual Conference this year. See you in Church,

!

Classes are held Sunday mornings immediately following the worship service. Classes run 3 – 6 weeks and feature different topics and leaders.

Starting Sunday morning May 7th (no class on Mother's Day, May 14th or Father’s Day, June 16th) we will be starting a 6-week Adult Enrichment Class called Neurotheology: Spirituality and Brain Science. Over the last two decades the scientific community has made tremendous progress in the area of neuroscience. These developments are likely to provide significant benefits for the world. But do these new insights into how our brain works have anything to do with our faith and spirituality? This class will attempt to answer that question. A lot of the material in this class will come from the work of Dr. Andrew Newberg. Dr. Andrew Newberg is a neuroscientist who studies the relationship between brain function and various mental states. He is a pioneer in the neurological study of religious and spiritual experiences, a field known as “neurotheology.”

Trinity UMC has an on-going home group centered around connection and conversation. The home group meets most Mondays at 6:30pm. We've tailored the home group in such away that allows for people to come and go as their schedules allow. We've divided our gatherings into 'seasons'. Each 'season' lasts 6-8 weeks and allows for people to connect during seasons of their own lives.

For questions and driving directions, email our Director of Discipleship, Jeff Manildi, at [email protected].

Music Notes

Trinity's Chancel Choir is always a welcoming, hospitable bunch, but each year we especially invite "summer singers" to join us during June and July. If you enjoy singing, but choir doesn't usually fit your schedule, consider singing with us this summer. Some special Sundays in July will make this a rewarding musical experience. You will also be providing summer reinforcements for us, as folks do take vacations. We rehearse each Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:00 P.M. Questions or comments? Ask Barbara (528-0745), or speak with any choir member.

Book Club: Thursday, June 8 at 2:00pm in the Opal Room of Trinity UMC. The book club does not study one book but invites participants to talk about books they have read. For more information, call Donna Asire at 528-0342.

UMW Executive Board: Monday, June 12, 1:00pm in the Fellowship Hall. Board meetings are open to any interested member.

A Day in the Life of a VCC Preschooler…….. Stories shared by actual VCC Students

Red Door Student, Tyler (5yrs old) When I get to school we go to the green door and then we go to the red door and play. Then we go outside to play, I like soccer. We go inside and eat snack have do a circle time. At circle time we read books and sing songs. After that we do art like shaving cream painting and glue and color. We go outside one more time and then we have lunch and lay down for nap. When we wake up we play and then go outside and then my mommy picks me up. Yellow Door Student, Jace (3yrs. old) When I get to school I play with my friends inside my classroom then outside. Then we have group time and we read books we sit on our names and then we wash our hands and get ready for snack. Then we play and make projects like art and playdough and cut and color. We have lunch from home that mommy made me. After our tummy is full we go to nap and then we wake up and play outside. Then we be picked up and go home and eat dinner and take baths and go night night. Green Door Student, Jack (2yrs old) Mommy brings me to school and I go outside to play. We go inside and have snack like breakfast bars and raisins. At circle time we play and do books and sing songs. Then we practice our names and make projects and then eat lunch. We go potty and then we lay down for nap and rest our bodies and then we wake up! We read books and then we play dress up and go outside and then mommy picks me up. Purple Door Student, Observed by Ms.Valerie Today I observed Olive, she is 6 months old and comes to VCC 5 days a week to the purple door. At drop off there were a few tears when saying goodbye to Dad so Teacher Michelle comforted her with hugs and a soft dolly. After that she practiced sitting up and playing with several teething toys. Then it was time for a bottle and nap in her crib. After her nap the toddler boys kept her entertained by giving her toys and tickling her toes. Then it was time for snack and Olive tried pureed pees and mango, which she liked very much. Then it was more play and then another nap. When she woke the toddlers were busy playing in water since it was a hot day and Olive had a chance to play also. She splashed in the water with her hands and then with her toes. After another snack it was time to go home. I hope you enjoyed learning what a day in the life of our students is like from their perspective. Thanks for reading. Best, Ms.Valerie

Graduation Sunday June 11

This is the day we celebrate our graduates, both near and far. Graduation represents the end of one season in our lives and the beginning of another. Some will continue on to the next phase in their education while others will apply their knowledge in the working world. Whichever path they choose, we wish the graduating class of 2017 good luck.

Back in the Day…. Once again I found myself lost in the past looking at newspaper articles (social media of the past), scrapbook photos, and reading the bulletins and meeting minutes from yesteryear. One thing that stands out is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. The 1960’s were a turbulent time and many of the issues we face now were also concerns then: there was racial tension, a nation divided over the war in Vietnam, gender inequality, and closer to home, how to meet our budget each year. A socially conscious and compassionate congregation, Trinity held special events with guest speakers to discuss some of these issues; they held fundraisers to supplement the budget deficit they faced (ever hear of a Foodless Bake Sale?); and they welcomed the community with barbecues, annual Lenten Festivals, Country Fairs, and for worship. The Women’s Society for Christian Service (WSCS) – a predecessor of the United Methodist Women (UMW) – supported Navajo Indian children in Arizona with clothing, toys, and financial donations. Our own UMW continues that tradition with their annual Layette project that benefits local low-income women and infants. And interspersed through all of the meetings and planning and concerns – there was the music. Concerts have always been a large part of life at Trinity. Choirs from other cities, secular concerts, and our own Chancel Choir have provided many happy hours of musical talent for our listening pleasure. There’s a lot more to come and I’ll share more with you each month. SAVE THE DATE for our 60th anniversary celebration in April 2018. MaryAnn
