open a store in El Paso for the first time. The natural food supermarket aims to open the

45,000-square-foot store, now under constructionon Mesa across from Coronado High School, inOctober, according to Rick Amstater of RJL RealEstate Consultants, a real estate brokerage firmtasked with the development of a two-storyshopping center also underway next to the super-market. “In addition to Whole Foods, we’re building

another 45,000 square feet of space and of those45,000 square feet, 12,000 square feet will be of-fices on the second floor,” Amstater said. “Thebalance will be either retail or restaurant.”Tenants for the spaces have not yet been an-

nounced, he said.“The other tenants will move in before and

after [October],” Amstater added.Whole Foods is slated to hire more than 100

individuals to operate the store and pay employ-ees a starting wage of $11 per hour, according toWhole Foods spokesperson David Redick. “Typically, we hire 80-to-95-percent of the

team members within the immediate community,with a handful of transfers from other areas of thecountry – New Mexico and Texas,” Redick said. Jobs will be posted on the company’s website

late this summer or early this fall, he noted. High quality food and a knowledgeable staff is

what sets Whole Foods apart from other grocers,Redick said. “We are the first national grocery chain com-

mitted to providing GMO [Genetically ModifiedOrganism] transparency for our customers by

2018,” he said. “There are 90-plusingredients commonly found atour competitors that we do notcarry on our shelves. A few ingre-dients that do not meet our qualitystandards include hydrogenatedfats and artificial colors, flavors,preservatives and sweeteners.”For shoppers with food aller-

gies, Whole Foods offers storetours with a nutritionist who teaches customerswhat to look for on food labels.“We are the destination for people with alter-

native diets and food allergies,” Redick said.“Our knowledgeable team members will helpcustomers find an alternative to meet all types ofallergies. We also sign the most common food al-lergies, such as gluten free, next to price tags.”Beef, pork, chicken and turkey producers who

sell to Whole Foods are rated for their animalwelfare practices with the help of the Global Ani-mal Partnership, a cohort of farmers, ranchers,animal welfare advocates, scientists and retailersdedicated to continually improving the lives offarm animals.“You won’t find any added growth hormones,

nitrites or nitrates, or antibiotics in any of ourmeat,” Redick said. Whole Foods’ wild-caught seafood comes

from fisheries that are certified sustainable by theMarine Stewardship Council or are rated eithergreen or yellow by the Monterey Bay AquariumSeafood Watch® program and The Safina Center. “We don’t sell any of the red-rated seafood

that you might find at other grocery stores orseafood markets,” Redick said. “Red ratings typi-

cally suggest that the fish popu-lation is overfished or caught inways that harm other marine lifeor habitats.”Whole Foods buys and sells

farmed seafood as well, but onlyfrom farms that are leaders in en-vironmentally responsible aqua-culture, he said. The company’s aim to reduce

its effect on the environmentisn’t limited to the food. Con-struction of the store is beingdone with energy efficiency inmind. “We will install solar panels

on the rooftop,” Redick said. “The store will fea-ture all LED interior lighting, and we are usingrecycled glass for a portion of the storefront.”Until the Westside store opens this fall, the

closest Whole Foods Market to El Paso is in Al-buquerque.“We see an impressive and growing food scene

in El Paso and want to be a part of this foodmovement,” Redick said.

5 Ways to Cool Your Home for Less this SummerAs summer approaches in the Sun City, energy bills will rise along with the

temperature, and knowing how to cool your home in a way that won’t break

the bank is — dare we say — even more important than knowing where to get

the best raspas in town.

Making a few updates to a home’s insulation and AC units can make a big im-

pact on energy costs, especially for larger homes. Buying Energy Star appliances

will save on utilities, but there are also cost-saving methods you can adopt with

the appliances you already own.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are five simple ways to keep

the cool in, keep the heat out and save money doing both.

Utilize wind and windows When night falls and the tem-

perature drops, the U.S. Dept. ofEnergy recommends turning off

your cooling system and openingyour windows. In the morning,windows and blinds should beshut to trap cold air inside.

Effective window coveringsare equally important to prevent-ing heat build-up in the home. Infact, when completely closed andlowered on a sunny window,highly reflective blinds can re-duce heat gain by about 45 per-cent.Ventilation is the least expen-

sive and most energy-efficientway to cool any building, notesthe U.S. Dept. of Energy.

Be thermostat vigilantWhen you leave the house, re-

member to lower the thermostat,allowing the house to go un-cooled while you’re away. How-ever, be sure to set the thermostatto a temperature that’s comfort-able for any pets.The U.S. Dept. of Energy rec-

ommends lowering the thermo-

stat to 78 degrees Fahrenheitonly when you are at home andneed cooling. The departmentalso aims to the bust the myththat drastically lowering the tem-perature, say to 58 degrees, willcool the house down faster — Itwill not. Setting the thermostat toan excessively low temperatureonly adds to your energy bill. Additionally, lamps and TV

sets should not be placed nearthermostats due to the fact thatthermostats sense heat fromthese appliances, which can thencause AC units to run longer thanintended.For those with a routine sched-

ule, a programmable thermostatcan automatically change thetemperature during the times youexpect to be out.

Know how best to use your fansBecause fans cool individuals,

and not the space within a home,by creating a wind chill effect,having them on in an emptyroom is a waste of energy. Re-versely, fans can also save on en-ergy costs when used wherethey’re needed most. When combined with air con-

ditioning, a ceiling fan can allowyou to raise the thermostat about4 degrees Fahrenheit with no re-duction in comfort, according tothe U.S. Dept. of Energy.Fans should also be used to re-

move heat and humidity frombathrooms after a shower, inkitchens after cooking, and inlaundry rooms after washing anddrying. Fans can be used for spotventilation throughout the home.

Maintain cooling systems Reading the owner’s manual

for your air conditioner or evap-orative cooler is paramount toknow how best to operate andmaintain the unit.Replacing a dirty or clogged

filter with a clean one can loweryour air conditioner's energyconsumption by up to 15 percent,according to the U.S. Dept. ofEnergy. It’s recommended to clean or

replace your cooling system's fil-ter or filters every one to twomonths during the cooling sea-son. However, filters may needto be replaced more often if theair conditioner is in constant use,is subjected to dusty conditions,or you have fur-bearing pets inthe house. To ensure your cooling system

is running at its maximum effi-ciency, schedule regular mainte-nance with a certified HVACtechnician.

Be aware of the devices that generate heatOnly about 10 percent to 15

percent of the electricity that in-candescent lights consume re-sults in light: the rest is turnedinto heat, according to the U.S.Dept. of Energy. This means thatthe more lights that are on in thehouse, the hotter it’s going to beinside. It’s best to install lighting that

runs cooler. LED light bulbs emitvery little heat, unlike incandes-cent bulbs which release 90 per-cent of their energy as heat andCFLs which release about 80percent of their energy as heat.

Other devices that add heat tothe home when plugged in andon include TVs, stereos, comput-ers, dyers, dishwashers, ovens,curling irons, and hair dryers.Use of these devices should bekept to a minimum to keep thespace cool.On the hottest days this sum-

mer, the U.S. Dept. of Energyrecommends you avoid using theoven and instead cook on thestove, in a microwave or on agrill outside — A top tier excuseto throw a barbecue.
