• The majority of Canadians are personally affected by adoption. In fact, 6 in 10 Canadians have had personal experience with adoption.
• In a domestic and an international adoption, the biological parents give up all their rights to their child. – In the case of international adoption, it is permanent. – In domestic adoptions, the birth parents has a certain amount of time where they can take the baby back.
• 37.5% of adoptions are done through private agencies• Only 2% of unmarried women choose to place their child for adoption.• Only 1% of teen pregnancies result in immediate adoption placements.• A child in foster care can wait up to five years to be adopted; the average of which is 8
years old.• Each year, 20% of children (26,517 in 2007) exit foster care at age 18 without an
adoptive family.
