Editorial (AKA Pillion Ponderings) Hi, my name is Jennie Breeze, my husband is Paul and we’ve got a black 1150 GS (‘cause black is the fastest – Paul sez so!!!) and a Yamaha 600 chookie/motard. The GS is our second beemer…about 5 years ago Paul bought a BMW 1100 S (red) with an OK seat but I de-served a medal after 800kms in a day. Enough was enough and after 3 years and with the lure of heated grips, the black 1150GS with sheepskin cover and softer seat was bliss. Last year we spent 2 weeks going to the BMW Safari in SA and seeing friends, and with the thought of this years Safari in Tassie I succumbed to temptation and bought a heated vest – the last Hill End ride made it all worthwhile. HINT: Be sure, when all else fails, to really read the in-structions on how to plug the controller to the vest – I managed to mix it up and was unable to turn down the heat but I didn’t complain!! Apart from being my first magazine this is my first time at producing anything like this (apart from emails), so I would really like to thank Al (and Marie) for all their help and advice in getting my first one out. And as when peo-ple are particularly good at what they do they make it look extremely easy but I can assure you that there is a steep learning curve to overcome !! I’d also like to thank all the other people (esp. Wozza) who have sent in articles, photos and ideas. Without this help I am unable to do the job as there would be no ma-terial for the magazine. So ………….. this brings me to the request for ANYTHING that can be used e.g. jokes, good web sites to visit, trip reports (positive or negative), good places to stay and or see, technical advice etc and, if you have ANY good ideas for the magazine, please don’t be shy in letting me know. Please note change in venue for the October meeting to Cootamundra. Jennie Breeze (Editor) Web site/s of the month: www.UKGSer.com Mainly for GS people

President’s Message aka “Ramjets Rave” At my first public appearance as president of the club, I attended the 2003-2004 Annual Dinner held at the “Rhinedorf” Restaurant in Beverley Hills. Before the en-trees had been served, I had been floored by the gener-osity of Phil & Anne Harris, of Procycles, the Sydney BMW dealer. Feeling somewhat embarrassed that I could not help by selling them raffle tickets, I was further mo-mentarily left speechless when Phil & Ann donated a set of tyres to the club. To Procycles, thank you very much. I’m sure the club will get a lot of mileage from these tyres. Congratulations go to Jennie Breeze & Marie Pennykid for organising a great night. The food was magic, beer was cold and not a sour Krout to be seen.

Our MC on the night, Past President Rob Milton, did a great job too whilst competing with the noise level of such a popular place. There were a few extra awards this year and I sheepishly made my way to the front to receive an award I was deemed fit to receive, The Biggest Whinge, or was that a whine in the Gearbox? I’m not sure if I deserved the award as I struggle to hear the gearbox, or anything else for that matter, over the exhaust system. It is at this time of year that there is normally a changing of the guard and this year is no exception. You will see that there are a few of the committee members going around the block again, thanks guys, and there are some new faces as well. In saying all that, it is the members that make the club and the committee’s role is likened to that of a “Board of Directors”. Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can help provide the program that you desire. As in any handover or team player changes, it can take time to meld efficiently and without dropping the ball occasionally. So, in the first set of six, we have come up with the following: Web Site. We acknowledge Al Pennykids’ development of the clubs electronic medium. He has done a great service to the club on his own site and we had decided the club should host its own domain name, like bmwtcnsw.org, for exam-ple. We are currently discussing with Al the preferred platform for the club. We expect this finalised by the end of August. Club General Meetings. We have invited Rob Dunstan – from Motohansa, to pre-sent to us tyre options for BMW’s. We look forward to Robs presentation at the August meeting. October Meeting – Has been moved from the last Wednesday of the Month to Saturday 30/10. Warren is working on a pub/camping weekend at or near Cootamundra. This allows our country members more access to our meetings. BMWTC of NSW 40th Anniversary. Sandra Gluck is heading up a sub committee to celebrate this milestone. Sandra is looking forward to being able to capture the clubs history and how it has evolved. Sandra is chasing up old photos, and any memorabilia you may know of or have. Please contact her. Anyways, it’s early in the game, and I’m going to kick on the 4th Tackle. You won’t see me beating around the bush. It will be a straight defence line. Lets play ball. Ian “Ramjet” Ramsay.

An Australian Love Poem Of course I love ya darling You’re a bloody top notch bird And when I say you’re gorgeous I mean every single word So ya bum is on the big side I don’t mind a bit of flab It means that when I’m ready There’s something there to grab So your belly isn’t flat no more I tell ya, I don’t care So long as when I cuddle ya I can get my arms round there No shiela who is your age Has nice round perky breasts They just gave into gravity But I know ya did ya best I’m tellin’ ya the truth now I never tell ya lies I think its very sexy That ya got dimples on ya thighs I swear on me Nanna’s grave now The moment that we met I thought you was as good as I was ever gonna get No matter wot you look like I’ll always love ya dear Now shut up while the GP’s on And fetch another beer !!!!

Wozza’s Whinge Vice Pres’ Shot? Ever shot yourself in the foot? There’s no blood or any-thing but I’m pretty sure I’ve done it. Remember the sur-vey and how I said you send ‘em in and I’ll put the info together and hand it on to the new committee? (The one I wasn’t gunna be on. The one I was gunna give the sur-vey results to and say it’s not really broken but the punt-ers have a few suggestions for you. The then I’d disap-pear one). Well the only nomination for Vice President at the AGM got withdrawn and in the election everyone’s looking at the floor or at the ceiling waiting for some sucker to stick their hand up and volunteer. I must’a scratched me ear or flinched ‘cause next minute I’m the new Vice Pres’. It was seconds later that I felt the sharp pain in me foot when I realised I was stuck with survey. That makes this Wozza’s Whinge and subsequent whinges, the Vice President’s Report. Now I like political correctness about as much as I’d like eating dog drop-pings so if the new title upsets you, bad luck in the short term. Here’s how you can fix it or otherwise in a democ-ratic sort of way. You can vote via the editor to get rid of the Whinge but you gotta vote according to the rule. The only rule is, all votes must be accompanied by an article accepted for publication by the new editor, Jennie Breeze. Letters of protest or complaint won’t cut it. We are talking items of interest only. Wozza’s Whinge, by the way, was a title given by Al of the retired editor type and I’ve just kept it up. Some say I’m bloody good at it. Something different. Many of the country members said they’d come to meet-ings if they weren’t always in Sydney so in an attempt to please some different folk the October meeting is pro-posed for Cootamundra. Why Coota!? Cause it’s within about 4 hours or so of a lot of places. (Yes I know if you live in the north it’s 4 hours by helicopter but you can only please some of the people some of the time. If this one works there could be more). The meeting will be at a venue yet to be chosen but on Saturday 30th October. I hope the meeting is dry (almost) but will arrange for it to degenerate into the most popular event surveyed, a pub run. The Coota Council is on the case and have sug-gested meeting at the RSL then several pubs, motels and camping options within walking distance of each other. Full details will be in next months newsletter. Why not this month? ‘Cause I haven’t been home for four days and I’m typing this in the cold half of Wozza’s shed wearing more gear than I would on a midnight to dawn ride. The warm, air conditioned side of Wozza’s shed is now number two son’s love shack and the computer and I have been punted in favour of his girlfriend/s. MCC Stuff Yeah, I’m still doing that. Big news is that Sandra Gluck has taken on the other delegates position for our club. On yer Sandra! The noise thing is getting big, real BIG. Two page spread in Brisbane Courier Mail and some brand new stock motorcycles are coming out that could

get booked because of conflicting regulations. Something will give soon. I was in Adelaide last weekend for the Australian Motor-cycle Council AGM where there was a coming together of all the motorcycle lobby groups. This unity can only make us stronger in representation to government on federal issues affecting riders. Information sharing between state groups should also cut down on duplication of effort. Some free time on Sunday arvo saw a few of the dele-gates escape to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood. I admit to dribbling on several tasty machines on both two and four wheels. Well worth a look if you’re in Adelaide. We went up the Gorge Road on the way there, which is a great bike road but with a high motorcycle accident rate. Shortly there will be new ‘W’ beam type barriers installed at motorcycle run off areas with a bottom rail and top cover shielding the posts. A result of rider consultation with the road authority that, if successful in reducing inju-ries will give us a new benchmark in crash barriers. Welcome to all the new committee. I look forward to working with each and every one of you to continue to grow the size of the club and the activities it provides to members. Cheers, Woz P.S. If anyone has an old PC, please send it to Adrian before the next AGM.

Because I am a trained nurse (operating theatres) I have always had a bit of an interest in First Aid. To tell you the truth I am quite used to dealing “life and death” situations but it is always in a well equipped and con-trolled area with a trained team. Finding yourself by the roadside trying to help someone, as when I found myself with Tom Torrance after he and his bike parted company, is far more terrifying than being at work, which is why I am very interested in having a St Johns First Aid Course conducted in the near future. The course is over 1 day ( 7 hrs) and is $90.00 ea (and you may be able to claim it on your Health Fund!). Please ask yourself these questions:

1. What is the first thing you should do after you ar-rive on the scene of an accident?

2. Should I take off the injured cyclists helmet – and if so HOW do I take it off?

3. If I need to start CPR what is the rate, how many times do I compress in a minute, is it the same ratio for 1 person alone as for two people to-gether?

(See end for Answers.) We need a minimum of 12 people to run the Course but can have as many as 24. . ANSWERS:

1. Danger: Assess is it safe to approach the injured person without being a casualty too. Response. Check consciousness – Unconscious casualties are given priority as they may have a compromised airway. Airway Clear the airway Breathing Commence EAR if the casualty is not breathing Circulation Commence CPR if there is no pulse

2. A full face helmet should only be removed if the injured rider does not have a clear airway and cannot breathe. In all other circumstances the helmet should remain in place unless the rider chooses to remove it him/herself.

3. This is a fairly controversial but most CPR is now taught as 15 compressions and 2 breaths , whether it is 1 or 2 people , at 4 cycles per min-ute.

This is only a tiny amount of info I have taken from a St John’s Ambulance pamphlet that I received as part of the Snowy Run – it is put out by the Motorcycle Council of NSW.

I need to know if anyone is interested – this course may not happen until 2005 as there is a lot on every weekend.

I will keep you posted, but please drop me a line, phone or email even if you think you may want to do it.

Charlie Wear Heated Vests - again

At the May meeting we had a presentation by two repre-sentatives from Charlie Wear, a company based in Mel-bourne that has started to produce heated vests for mo-torcyclists. They gave a good presentation and the prod-uct seems to be quite good quality. They make 4 sizes ; S-M-L-XL and brought samples of each along for trial fittings. The vest is priced at $310 each, but for bulk or-ders through the club, they will cost $260 each if we buy ten or more at one time(but only if the club places the order). On the strength of the presentation, many mem-bers ordered on the spot and the club has already has its first bulk order delivered. If you are interested in one, contact our regalia person or Charlie Wear on 03 9435 6200 email: [email protected]

(Highly recommended by the editor.)

More on the ZigZag train ride From: Graeme Hind Subject: Re: ZZR Ride Sunday 12th September Meeting: BP @ Nth Richmond ready to leave at 9.30am Warren, Sorry it’s taken me a week or 2 to reply. You don’t have to worry about the train being full, there is always room somewhere on board. Also on that day, there is a diesel railmotor running as well as the steam. The time table is Departures from Clarence Returns to Clarence at 0940 Railmotor-------------------------------1135. 1100 Steam------------------------------------1230. 1140 Railmotor-------------------------------1335. 1300 Steam------------------------------------1430. 1340 Railmotor-------------------------------1535. 1500 Steam------------------------------------1630 You could go down on the 1100 steam, hop off at the picnic spot, then flag down the 1300 steam trip. That would give you 2 hours at the picnic spot. Or you could come back on the 1140 railmotor service. the down side to that is you miss the uphill slog behind the steam. The other thing you could do if you didn’t want the 2 hours at the BBQ spot is to go down on the 1140 railmo-tor and back on the 1300 steam. That would give you 1hour and twenty minutes at the picnic spot. Let me know what you’re going to during the week before and I word up the drivers for you. I won’t be there that weekend, but I will word up the steam driver to give a couple of people a cab ride. See the attached images. 2 are of my R100 when it was brand spanking new in 1984. The other image is of a club run to ZZ in about 1979 or 1980. Trevor Dean's stroke 5 is in the foreground, with my Honda 750 four directly behind. Lumpy

Dead horses The tribal wisdom of the Dakota Indians, passed on from one generation to the next, says that when you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount. But in modern business (and education and government and churches), because heavy investment factors are taken into consideration, other strategies are often tried with dead horses, including the following: 1. Buying a stronger whip. 2. Changing riders. 3. Threatening the horse with termination. 4. Appointing a committee to study the horse. 5. Arranging to visit other sites to see how they ride dead horses. 6. Lowering the standards so that dead horses can be included. 7. Reclassifying the dead horse as "living-impaired." 8. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse. 9. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed. 10. Providing additional funding and/or training to in-crease the dead horse's performance. 11. Doing a productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse's performance. 12. Declaring that the dead horse carries lower over-head and therefore contributes more to the bottom line than some other horses. 13. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses. 14. Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position.

THE SPOT WHERE FOREST GUMP STOPPED RUNNING Monument Valley Utah USA In 2001 Ian Kite and Richard Fanning (Melbourne) shipped two R80 G/S to Los Angeles California for a 4week tour around California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Colorado.

Day 5.

At this stage of the trip we are travel-ing with our old friend from Perth John Jennings (JJ) on a borrowed R80, and

a new friend, Andre on an R1100 GS. We met Andre yes-terday at the Grand Canyon, and rode together to Tuba City Arizona where we have camped in an “RV” park. Andre is in advertising in New York. Being between jobs he decided to load up his GS and ride down to Guate-mala for a few months. He is on his way home (indi-rectly).

Wake up to another sunny day. Surprise! Surprise! Rich-ard did NOT have a good nights sleep on the picnic table. We get seriously into trying to find out why John’s bor-rowed R80 is running so crappy. Total strip clean & re-build of the carbies. Careful synchonisation. Andre is fas-cinated by our antics, detailed knowledge of all things boxer, and the banter between JJ, Richard & me (mostly taking the piss out of Richard). All this, plus breakfast takes a while and we don’t get going till 11.30 when its already quite hot. We say our good-byes and swap email addresses. Andre heads north-west to the Glen Canyon, and we head north-east to Kayenta, where we turn left to ride through Monument Valley.

It’s not long before the red rock spires and mesas start to appear out of the flat desert. We have all seen this scen-ery a dozen times on old western movies, but it is abso-lutely fantastic to see it in real life! After crossing a long flat valley the road rises up a bit and there are great views back south. We stop for some photos at what we later realise is the spot where Forest Gump stops run-ning. While stopped, about 30 Harley dudes cruise through in a group with a backup truck. They are dressed just like every other Harley dude we see – no helmet, bandanna, tee-shirt & leather vest. We later learn that it is a Dutch group who have paid $30,000 for their badass dream trip.

Its getting seriously hot now, but we still go for full-face helmets and jackets. I swap bikes with JJ to try to diag-nose the problem with the R80, which is still missing at higher revs. I decide it must be electrical. We stop at Bluff for lunch. We define an “Arizona lunch” as anything with a large Gatorade plus another drink. We find a bit of shade and do some experimentation with swapping plug leads R to L on the R80, and in a (heat)stroke of genius I deduce it’s the plug cap/lead, not the coil. I fit a second hand NGK cap and new lead out of my spares kit and Hey-presto! Problem solved.

We continue north through stunning desert scenery via Blanding and Monticello. We are riding through a high desert. Over to the east we can see the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The crazy rock formations, peaks, canyons just keep changing around every bend. There really is no point trying to describe it – you have to do it!

Somewhere along the way Richard has another “I’m not coping” moment. After stopping to polish his boots or something, he can’t start his bike. As I built the bike and sold it to him, he immediately accuses me of doing some-thing dodgy with the electricals. I check it out for him … “Richard, it won’t start in gear unless you pull the clutch in.” “But I never start it in gear.” “ Richard, see this little green light on the dash? That shows when it is in Neutral. It’s not on. Its in gear.” “Oh.”

Mmmmm… perhaps its heat stress!

We arrive in Moab late in the afternoon. This is a great town. It’s a base for skiing in winter and desert sports in summer. It’s full of young people and foreign back-packers. There are lots of 4WDs jacked up to the max that they use for rock-hopping in the canyons. It’s hot! We suck a few MGDs (Miller Genuine Draft) and have a swim in the campground pool. This is the first time I have seen full-size bus motorhomes with a centre section that slides out sideways to give a full-sized living room. Have dinner in a nice Italian restaurant out on the deck, and take a stroll around town and do some window-shopping. This is living!!

I’m feeling quite chuffed with myself because I insisted that we take this route. Its lived up to expectations and then some.

DON”T RIDE AT NIGHT

Sat 28th July

“Not the Annual Dinner” Ride 17th July Damien , Andrew and I met at Wiseman’s Ferry for an overnight run to the Glow Worm Tunnel. Staying at Lith-gow and returning via the Freeway it would be around 400kms mainly on dirt and just perfect for the GS bikes. 7.45 am at Webb Ck after a run through Galston Gorge and it was f'n cold!! Damien and I were on 1150 Adven-tures and Andrew on a Dakar. We crossed the Hawkesbury on the ferry, free fun and fog bound. On the other side we turned left then right onto the Bicentennial Road. The first dirt and it’s very open and as fast or scenic as you like. Under the electric-ity pylon we turned right onto Wheel Barrow Ridge Track. This is soft sand and gravel for about 30kms to the Putty Road at Colo Heights. Here we crossed the Putty and headed right for about half a km then left onto Upper Colo Road. This has beautifully clear views on both sides and you can still see the devastation of the bush fires of 3 years ago. Some tight turns into the valley brings you out onto a wooden bridge on the Colo River. Turn right onto the gravel and then follow Mountain Lagoon road via Comleroy and on into Bilpin. We arrived at the Bilpin cafe at 10am just on opening and devoured a good feed of bacon & eggs and a milk shake. Back on to the bikes and less than two kms of tar to Mt Irvine Road. This road says it’s closed but it isn’t. It is a steep grade but easily negotiated. There is an unbelievable drop off to the right and views into Wollemi NP. The road is heavily pot holed but you get a good roll down into the valley in 2nd / 3rd gear. Over a small wooden bridge and then onto the road into Mt Irvine and Mt Wilson. Follow this through and you come out at the Bells Line of Road only about 20 kms from the Zig Zag railway. An-drew had to head back to Sydney so Damien and I turned west and had our next ‘comfort’ stop at Zig Zag car park. In keeping with BMWTC we pulled out the Thermos and within a few minutes had the cappuccinos flowing. We knew it was cold and thought it funny that the rain drops were floating in the air (turned out to be snow)! Through the car park and then it is a good fast run to the Glow Worm Tunnel via Clarence. About 50 kms on dirt through the NP and pine forests as fast as you like. We stopped for lunch at the Glow worm tunnel car park and then took the 2 km walk into and back from the tunnel. This is the old railway tunnel to Newnes and is an easy grade for walking. Not too many Glow worms but a good walk through to the fern garden. Got back to the bikes and then started to head into Lithgow and the Colonial. What had been easy and fast riding now started to turn interesting. Damien had lost the metal head light protec-tor on the way in, run over it and damaged his front mud guard. On the way back his tail rack sheared through in two places - my BMW tail rack and OEM top box flew off like a Mc Hales navy depth charge - even with only 3.5kgs in the box. The extraordinary thing is these failures happened within a km or so of each other. One box was Givi the other

BMW. The road was easy and in great fast condition. To their credit BMW have covered mine under warranty say-ing they haven’t seen a failure like this before.(the bike is six weeks old). The base plate simply failed in a perfect circle around the retaining screws. Group damage bill around $800. A couple of 4WD’s stopped to offer assistance and ad-mire the bikes. We managed to strap everything in place and push on, stopping whenever necessary to tighten the load. Just near Bungle Boori it started snowing again – this time heavily. The flakes settled on the ground and bikes – very pretty but we decided to get a move on. At Bungle Boori the ground was white. A group of trail riders was camping there and were like curious kids gawking and probably thinking we were nuts. More snow fell in the ten minutes it took to re tie the loads and by now the land-scape was covered with about 2 inches. Quite surreal and it soon became very slippery making for motorcycle ballet on the muddy road. We eventually got to the bottom of Glow Worm tunnel road and into the pub. Several beers helped us recover. At some stage we saluted those at the annual dinner and saw NZ beat the Wallabies. All this while we destroyed about 2kgs of beef. The Colonial offers good clean rooms for about $40 each. We woke up surrounded by lots of bike stuff and even more snow. The bikes had a good 2 inches all over them. After a few photos and running repairs we left around 9.30. The Great Western Hwy was closed until 11.30 so we washed the bikes and took it carefully through the ice and snow which went all the way to Lawson. Bloody good ride, great adventure with the weather and a BMW repair bill to boot. Can’t wait to do it all again but definitely no top boxes and no snow. Andrew

What the guys missed out on! A great night.

Members Letters Hi all, I thought I would take the opportunity of contributing to the newsletter following the clubs annual dinner presenta-tion that was held at the Rhinedorf German Restaurant in Beverly Hills, which my wife & I attended. I should state up front that part of my motivation after speaking with Ian, is the awarding of points for attending functions & rides not to mention also picking up points for contributing to the newsletter. So it would be fair to say that I am well underway in putting points in the bank for a targeted trophy in the future. Another key issue that must be mentioned is that this article will also support the clubs new Editor, in making her job easier in providing a newsletter to the members that has reasonable content…after all, the clubs news letter is only worth what members are prepared to con-tribute. Now for the dinner. Having arrived at the restaurant at around 7pm (drove around the block 3 times to find park-ing) I noted that most of the 55 booked seats had been take, which indicated that it was a case of first in first served, by all accounts we possibly took the last two seats. We ended up at the end of a table, joining com-pany with the currently elected President Ian Ramsey & his partner Kim who I had not met before. As it turned out we spent most of the night chatting between eating & drinking, this left little time to socialize with others, de-spite the absence of opportunity because the restaurant was not that big. That suited me fine as it gave me time to cross examine Ian on several issues relating to the workings of the club, being a newer member. The night saw several awards being handed out to mem-bers for their contributions to the club in varied forms & it was also interesting to note that the night provided the opportunity of seeing some quality outfits such as Kilts, Dinner Suits, Black Tie outfits along with plenty of colour-ful ladies outfits……my discussions with Ian regarding his flash outfit indicated that his particular outfit spent plenty of time in the wardrobe with very little use & this was a perfect opportunity to demonstrate that he did own a little more than leather bike outfits complimented by flannel-ette shirts & jeans. The out going President whilst handing the awards out also drew our attention that Paul Breeze was celebrating a birthday so we all took the opportunity in singing along the birthday song……Paul was humble in acknowledging his birthday & was asked to stand, whilst up he made strange hand gestures to indicate the number of years that the birthday related too. Unfortunately I was not able to identify with the gesture so I just took a guess at his age. Al in all it was great night, with a good turn out of not only local members but country members too & it helped me put faces to names that I have seen in club communica-tions. And many thank to Jennie and Marie who took the time to organize the night. John Pellicano

APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP/RENEWAL

BMW Touring Club of New South Wales Incorporated (Incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act,1984)

The BMW Touring Club of NSW was founded in 1965, with an initial membership of 15 and we celebrated our 35th anniversary in October 2000. The aim of the club is to provide a social medium for BMW riders and motorcycle touring. It is not necessary for you to own a BMW motorcycle to join the club. There are a wide range of activities throughout the year, ranging from regular day rides, rallies (local, interstate and other BMW club rallies), runs with interstate BMW clubs and camping weekends. We have gained a large number of trophies from our attendance at rallies. The club also has regular maintenance days (where you can tap into a vast range of knowledge from our members). We have spare parts available at a slight discount for members and a variety of special tools for use when servicing, repairing or replacing components. We also have social evenings, an annual presentation night/dinner and a Christmas party. The club encourages family involvement in all events.
