At 11: 35 p.m. Tuesday , plant operator PPL put an endto themorethan 14- hou r- lon g “al ert”statu s. The chil l- ing unit — a glorified air conditioner for the reactor buildin g and its equipme nt  — leaked the Freon and forced a partial evacuation of Uni t 1. As part of an “alert,” municipal, county and state agen ciessuchas theLuzern e County Emergenc y Manage- ment Agency are put on notice that they might need to respo nd. “While public safety was not at risk during this situ- ation,” PPL spokes woman Miriam Mylin said in a news release, “entering the emergency management plan ensured we had the resources available if  needed to help protect employees and support the safe operation of the plant.” An “alert” — the second- lowest of four emergency classifications — means the leak was an “actual or potential” risk to plant safe- ty but inc lud ed ve ry lit tleor no radioactive material, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Website. No radioacti ve material was involved but the area where the leak was located contains “plant safety sys- tems.” The Freon was safely removed from the reactor building, PPL said, and placed in on-site storage tanks. Exposure to large amounts of Freon over a short period of time can hav e negati vehealth effects , according to the U.S. Envi- ronme ntal Prote ction Agen- cy. PPL said no employees reporte d any injurie s. A back -up chil ling sys tem allowed Unit 1 to remain operating at full power dur- ingthe lea k. Unit 2 was not affected by the eve nt. SALEM TWP. — Workersat the SusquehannaNuclearPower Plant successfullystopped a Freon leak thattriggered an “alert” statusTuesday.

At 11: 35 p.m. Tuesday,plant operator PPL put anendto themorethan14-hour-long “alert”status. Thechill-ing unit — a glorified airconditioner for the reactorbuilding and its equipment — leaked the Freon andforced a partial evacuationof Unit 1.

As part of an “alert,”municipal, county and stateagenciessuchas theLuzerneCountyEmergency Manage-ment Agency are put onnotice that they might needto respond.

“While public safety wasnot at risk during this situ-ation,” PPL spokeswoman
