2 DEW TOUR: PANTECH BEACH CHAMPIONSHIPS Ocean City Today AUGUST 17, 2012

(Aug. 17, 2012) After months of antici-pation, the wait is finally over — the DewTour, with its world-class athletes, is backin Ocean City.

On Aug. 6, workers began building avertical ramp, Mega 2.0 ramp, skateboardbowl and a BMX park, on the beach, justnorth of the pier in downtown Ocean City.Scurrying hours on end, day and night, the crews completed the blocks-wide“Dew Tour Experience” earlier this week— just in time for Day 1 of the four-dayPantech Beach Championships, whichkicked off yesterday, Aug. 16, and will con-tinue through Sunday.

In April, Alli Sports, a division of theNBC Sports Group, announced a four-year renewal of its partnership withMountain Dew, along with the 2012 DewTour schedule — Ocean City was stop No.

1. The Ocean City Council in January setaside Aug. 16-19, for the East Coast leg ofthe 2012 Dew Tour, as requested by thetour’s planners, and town representativeshad been awaiting confirmation.

“I think Ocean City is a perfect locationfor the Dew Tour,” Ocean City Mayor RickMeehan said last week. “It was a greatevent last year and I think it will be evenbetter this year.”

Meehan attended several of the resortcompetitions last year, when the tourmade its Ocean City debut. He said for afirst-time event of that magnitude, every-thing went better than expected. Meehanpresented a special award to BrazilianPedro Barros, winner of the skate bowl

contest. The 2011 Pantech Open markedthe debut of the Dew Tour’s skate bowlcompetition.

“The athletes are just fantastic. Theyinteract with fans and the kids look up tothem. They’re role models,” Meehan said.“It’s very genuine. It adds something tothe event being able to interact with theathletes. It makes it even more entertain-ing.”

Ocean City was the first of four stopsduring the tour’s 2011 season and its firstbeachfront venue. A vertical ramp forskate and BMX competitions, a skatebowl and a BMX park were set up on thebeach, along with a festival village, be-tween Dorchester and Talbot streets. The

Pantech Open set a Dew Tour attendancerecord by drawing approximately 73,000fans during its four-day run.

“From the record-setting attendance tothe incredible success of the musical com-ponent in 2011, Ocean City was a majorsuccess for the Dew Tour,” Dew TourGeneral Manager Chris Prybylo said inApril, when it was announced Ocean Citywould be the first tour stop in 2012. “Inaddition to being a perfect fit for ourbeach venue, we’ve also developed greatpartnerships with the entire Ocean Citygovernment, including the mayor, CityCouncil and the town of Ocean City staff. We have incredible relationships withlocal businesses, and the fans showedtremendous support.”

The tour has been reshaped this yearto showcase action sports in three large-scale, premium and “grand-slam” styleevents. The 2012 Dew Tour locations areOcean City, Aug. 16-19; San Francisco,Oct. 18-21 (Toyota City Championships);and Breckenridge, Colo., (MountainChampionships), Dec. 13-16.

Dew Tour representatives workedclosely for several months with a numberof athletes to determine the best mix ofsports and disciplines at each stop thisyear. When the Dew Tour originated eightyears ago, it filled the role of introducingaction sports to a wide audience, throughmultiple events across the country, Pry-bylo said.

In the future, the Dew Tour will fill a

SKATEBOARD VERT1 BUCKY LASEK Hometown: BaltimoreBirthdate: Dec. 3, 1972

Maryland native BuckyLasek got his first skateboard,a Steve Caballero model, at age12, after his bike had beenstolen. He turned pro in 1990 at age 18, left hisMaryland home in 1998 and headed west toSouthern California. Over the course of his two-decade career, Lasek has proved time and againhe’s the fiercest, and most composed, of any com-petitor on the vert ramp.

With a never say die attitude, a perfectionist’sapproach to choreographing contest runs, and anuncanny ability to pull out a miracle when neces-sary, Lasek has taken home multiple Dew Cups,back-to-back X Games vert golds (twice) and VansTriple Crown titles. He unveiled the first new skate-boarding trick of the 2008 Dew Tour by landing aboneless fronstslide rodeo during the PanasonicOpen. All this despite numerous injuries, withscoped knees as a recurring theme. He forever willreign as the winningest vert skater of the 2000s.

2 PIERRE-LUC GAGNON Hometown: Montreal, Quebec, Canada Birthdate: May 2, 1980

On his 8th birthday, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, who goes by“PLG,” was given his first skate-board, and his father, Dennis, built a ramp in the back yard toencourage his son’s skating. In 1992, PLG’s fa-ther bought a skate park, and that same year, the12-year-old began to enter skateboarding compe-titions. He joined the pro circuit after winning theVans Amateur series in 1996, and in 2000,packed his bags, kissed his parents goodbye, andheaded west to San Diego.

After winning his first X Games gold in 2002(followed the next day with another gold in besttrick), he’s been one of, if not the guy to beat atnearly every event. In 2006 a pulverized patellagave him a major setback, but he came back evenstronger and more focused. By 2008 he was backin peak form, winning X Games, the MaloofMoney Cup, and, after getting his first Dew Tourvictory of the year in Orlando, eked out the pointsneeded to take home the Dew Cup.

3 SHAUN WHITE Hometown: Carlsbad, Calif.Birthdate: Sept. 3, 1986 Shaun White burst onto theskateboard scene in 1999 andhasn’t looked back since. Al-though renowned for his workon the slopes — claiming twoOlympic gold medals in 2006 and 2010, as wellas a total of 10 Winter X Games titles in snow-boarding slope style and super pipe — White isalso a well-respected skateboarder. He estab-lished himself as a threat on the vert ramps in2005, when he won the first-ever Dew Tour stop. However, he ended the season ranked ninth inthe Dew Cup standings. On the 2007 Dew Tour,Shaun captured three consecutive wins, as wellas his first X Games gold on the vert ramp, andhe went home with the 2007 Dew Cup. In 2006,White was named the Rider of the Year in bothTransWorld Snowboarding and TransWorld Skate-boarding magazine.

SKATEBOARD BOWL1 PEDRO BARROS Hometown: Florianopolis, BrazilBirthdate: March 16, 1995

Brazilian Pedro Barros isfrom a neighborhood calledRTMF, which is home to someof the best skaters and surfersin all of Brazil. His dad is bothhis best skate session buddy and his best friend. For the Brazilian, family always comes first.

Barros won most of the biggest bowl contestsaround the world. Names like Lincoln Ueda, BobBurnquist, Rune Glifberg, Omar Hassan, AlexPerelson inspire Pedro to skate the way he does, but it’s Leo Kakinho, Marcelos Kosake, RodolfoRamos that really showed him the way. Spendingmore then 70 days in the U.S. each year, Pedroalready considers California his second home.

2 BUCKY LASEK Hometown: BaltimoreBirthdate: Dec. 3, 1972

3 BEN HATCHELLHometown: Manassas, Va.Birthdate: April 4, 1990

Ben Hatchell is the best ex-ample of a man-Am if thereever was one. Winning thePhoenix Am two years in a row, this Zero skater has been mak-ing a real name for himself and throwing downbig tricks with the best of them. No matter if it isa vert ramp or a park course, if Hatchell is in thelineup, competitors beware.

BMX VERT1 JAMIE BESTWICK Hometown: Nottingham, EnglandBirthdate: July 8, 1971

Jamie Bestwick never thoughthe would become a BMX leg-end. Although he started ridingBMX with his friends at 10years old, Bestwick only kept up with the sport asa hobby. As the undisputed champ on the vertramp since he won his first X Games gold in2000, Bestwick is probably thankful he quit hisjob working for a company that repaired enginesfor major airlines in England.

A seven-time champion at the X Games, Best-wick won his second Dew Cup in 2006 after tak-ing first place in four of the five Tour stops, andhe garnered the Dew Tour Athlete of the Yearaward, as well. Bestwick claimed his fourth con-secutive Dew Cup during the 2008 season, thennabbed his third straight X Games gold.

He is sole owner of the BMX vert Dew Cup.

2 CHAD KAGY Hometown: Gilroy, Calif. Birthdate: Nov. 21, 1978

(Aug. 17, 2012) New to the PantechBeach Championships is the Mega 2.0,an event in which skateboarders andBMX athletes will perform a variety oftricks high in the sky.

“Adding Mega 2.0 allows our Skateand BMX Vert athletes to showcase

their abilities in a newdiscipline that will bevery exciting for spec-tators. Fans will beable to watch theMega 2.0 competi-tions right from thebeach,” said DewTour General Man-ager Chris Prybylo.

The Mega 2.0 ramp is a smaller ver-sion of the MegaRamp. The 30-footgap and 18-foot quarter pipe of theMega 2.0 ramp provide athletes thesame opportunity for dynamic tricksas the larger specs of MegaRamp, though it is a more technical ramp thatallows them to showcase street-in-spired tricks, as well. It’s big enough todo some huge tricks, but not so largethat the athletes are losing techniqueand style.

The MegaRamp has two differentgap sizes set at 50-foot and 70-footwide. The quarter pipe is 27 feet tall. The roll-ins are 65 feet and 85 feet tallfrom ground level. The Mega 2.0 hasone gap set at 30 feet wide. The quarterpipe is 18 feet tall and the roll-in is 35feet tall from ground level.

Skate Mega 2.0 practices will takeplace today, Friday, from 9-11 a.m.;Saturday, 3-5:30 p.m., and Sunday,4:30-5:45 p.m. The competition isscheduled for 6-7 p.m. on Sunday.

“Mega 2.0 is cool. It’s a smaller ver-sion of MegaRamp. I have a Mega-Ramp at my house and I have a goodtime with it,” said skateboarder BobBurnquist. “I’m looking forward to itbecause it’s a new event for the DewTour. It’s a little slower, a little lowerthan the MegaRamp, but still fasterand higher then Vert (60 feet wide, 13feet tall with roll-ins).”

BMX Mega 2.0 practice times aretoday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturday,11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The contest isset for Saturday from 1-1:45 p.m.

“I think it’s great they’re bringingsomething new to the series. It’s some-thing people haven’t seen before. It’sgoing to be a lot of fun,” said BMX ath-lete Steve McCann. “There will be a lotof spills and thrills. It will make for agood event for the crowd.”

(Aug. 17, 2012) The Dew Tour hasadded the first Flatland BMX event to thePantech Beach Championships competi-tion line-up. Flatland is a freestyle BMXriding style performed on smooth, flatsurfaces that do not include any ramps, jumps or grindrails.

“The Dew Tour is always looking to ex-pand in a way that represents the best inaction sports,” Dew Tour General Man-ager Chris Prybylo said Monday. “Throughour ongoing communication with athletesand the industry, we felt that Ocean City

was a prime spot to showcase a uniqueevent like BMX Flatland.”

The Flatland event is scheduled to takeplace Sunday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. It willbe more of a demonstration event than acompetition.

The four athletes —some of the biggestnames in Flatland BMX — chosen by aspecialized committee to display theirskills during the exhibition are TerryAdams, Matt Wilhelm, Mathias Dandoisand Alex Jumelin.

“It pretty exciting because as a proFlatland rider that has been involved inthe contest circuit for so many years, thisis huge. It is definitely a great step for [the

sport of] Flatland to be included, and it’sgreat for Dew Tour because it is just asprogressive as other forms of BMX,”Adams said during a recent interview withthe Dew Tour posted on www.allisports.com/dew-tour. The 29-year-old has beenriding Flatland for 19 years. “It’s awesomethat Dew Tour recognizes this because wedefinitely deserve to be include in thesebig events …

“I’m really stoked that Flatland is a partof Dew Tour this year. I have waited a longtime for this, and am very confident thiswill go well and that everyone will bestoked,” he said.

There is an amateur Flatland BMX cir-

cuit in the United States. For profession-als, there is a world circuit, consisting ofthree or four annual stops. Other eventsare also held each year worldwide inplaces such as Europe and Asia.

“I would say that those three guys (Wil-helm, Dandois and Jumelin) are alwaysmy biggest competition at any event,” hesaid during the interview with Dew Tour.“What is really cool about this group isthat everyone definitely has their ownstyle to offer. It will be very easy for every-one in the crowd to recognize and see thedifferences.”

(Aug. 17, 2012) Approximately 100world-class skateboarding and BMX ath-letes have converged in Ocean City for thePantech Beach Championships, whichbegan Thursday and will continue throughSunday.

No athlete is more familiar with the re-sort than professional skateboarder BuckyLasek, who grew up in Baltimore, vaca-tioned frequently in Ocean City and skatedat the Ocean Bowl park on Third Street.

Now at 39 years old, Lasek will be bat-tling some of the top skateboarders thisweekend, which marks the second yearthe Dew Tour has come to Ocean City.

In 2011, Lasek did not disappoint hisfans when he finished second in the Dew

Tour’s first Skate Bowl event and took tophonors in the Skate Vert competition.

During his fourth and final run of theSkate Vert contest, Lasek didn’t hold any-thing back and jumped into first placewith an 88, advancing him to the five-man super final. Again on his last run,Lasek was on point, scoring an 88.5 withone rider, defending 2010 Dew CupSkateboard Vert champion, Pierre-LucGagnon, left to take the ramp.

The crowd watched in anticipation asPLG started his run. When he missed atrick, Lasek fans knew he was the winnerand burst out in cheer. It was his 10thSkateboard Vert final victory, a Dew Tourrecord. Lasek raised his arms in triumphin front of the largest Skate Vert crowd inDew Tour’s eight-year history.

“I think that’s what they write books

and make movies about. I lived a dreamtoday,” Lasek said after the contest. “Therewas no pressure [during the last run]. Ijust know what I can do and I dropped inand didn’t think about anything else ex-cept the tricks I had ahead of me …

“Doing it in Ocean City, in my homestate of Maryland, it was a storybook end-ing,” he said.

At the end of last season, Lasek fin-ished third overall in Skateboard Vertwith 305 points. Shaun White was secondwith 307 points and Gagnon first with340 points. Gagnon is set to compete inOcean City again this year. Due to a kneesurgery, White will not take part in com-petitions, but he is scheduled to be pres-ent to support the other athletes.

“ready to fill my belly with Fisher’s Pop-corn.” One of his favorite stops on theBoardwalk, Fisher’s even had Lasek be-hind the counter last year handing outpopcorn to customers during a rain delayin the competition.

His schedule at this weekend’s eventhas him participating in the Skate Vertand Skate Bowl competitions.

“I’m looking forward to riding the bowlagain,” he said. The bowl is probably myfavorite event because it’s very diverse andthe fact that it’s on the beach sets themood. Which would you rather choose, being stuck inside an arena or on thebeach? The whole vibe is more alive andfree feeling.”

Lasek, who lives in California, arrivedin town earlier this week to prepare forcompetition. His goals are to make somenew tricks on the vert and put togetherfun runs. Lasek would love to win in frontof his hometown fans, but is expectingtough competition.

“The level of skateboarding is unbeliev-able,” he said. “It should be a fun show.”

To be successful, Lasek said it “justcomes down to doing what I do.” Thecrowd also gives athletes a boost, he said.

“Their excitement helps. You can feeltheir energy, along with the energy we’refeeling it’s like peer pressure almost to gofor [a big trick],” said Lasek, who is also aprofessional rallycross driver.

Bob Burnquist will also be competingthis weekend and will be back at fullstrength. Last year, he participated withan injured shoulder during the Skate Bowland Skate Vert contests. Burnquist, whowas born in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and

(Aug. 17, 2012) One year ago, the DewTour presented the Alli Rideshop SkateBowl Legends Jam during the PortlandInvitational in Portland, Ore. Because ofits success, a similar event was scheduledfor Ocean City during the Pantech BeachChampionships. The contest was set totake place Thursday.

“We had a great response to our SkateBowl Legends Jam in Portland, Ore., lastyear, and it made sense to bring it toOcean City to reflect the community’scommitment to bowl skating,” said DewTour General Manager Chris Prybylo.

Ocean City’s Ocean Bowl, on ThirdStreet and St. Louis Avenue, opened in1975. It is the oldest operating municipalskate park on the East Coast.

Athletes that were scheduled to com-pete in the Skate Legends Bowl eventwere Steve Alba, Steve Caballero, EddieElguera, Jeff Grosso, Christian Hosoi,Tony Magnusson, Chris Miller, LanceMountain, Pat Ngoho and Duane Peters.

They were chosen by a committee andinvited based on their status as true “pio-neers” of bowl skating. Many of the menhave been around for decades and con-tinue to work within the industry and oc-

casionally compete.“Steve Alba, Duane

Peters and Eddie Elguerawere three of the best inthe late 70s and 80s andthe rest of the field in the80s and 90s were thebest in bowl skating,”said Miller, chief creativedirector for Alli Sports.“The whole group is over40 [years old] and every-one has achieved a cer-tain status as a profes-sional.”

Miller designed theportable concrete struc-ture and was engineeredby Spohn Ranch. TheSkate Bowl made itsdebut during the DewTour Pantech Open inOcean City last summer. It was disassembled fol-lowing the competitionand re-assembled inPortland.

Miller stopped competing profession-ally in 1992, though he occasionally par-ticipates in some events. He won theLegends Jam in Portland.

Miller, who lives in San Diego, had theopportunity to test the Skate Bowl he de-signed in Ocean City last year. He alsodid on-air analysis for NBC during thePantech Open skating competitions.

“For me, it was huge. You imaginewhat you want to skate and then design

it. It was fun to see something you imag-ine come to life,” said Miller, who drewinspiration from bowls he skated in thepast. He also showed his design toskaters to get feedback. “It was the firsttime anyone’s created a portable bowl. Itturned out great.”

Miller said last Friday he was lookingforward to skating the bowl again andmeeting up with old friends this weekend

in Ocean City. He will also be broadcast-ing the skating events again this year.

“There’s a series of masters/legendscompetitions. Everyone knows eachother because they’ve been competing 30years or more,” Miller said. “It’s a re-union of sorts. It’s much more than acompetition. Everyone loves and sup-ports each other, which makes it kind ofspecial.”

now lives in California, said he will focuson Skate Vert and Mega 2.0, a new addi-tion to lineup and probably not competein the Skate Bowl competition.

“I’d love to be able to do all threeevents, but it’s really taxing and tiring. It’s a lot in one weekend,” Burnquist saidlast Friday.

Burnquist injured his back in Junewhen he fell 20 feet while working on theMegaRamp during practice for the XGames Big Air in Los Angeles. He spentthe next 18 hours in a wheelchair, but

after working with trainers, he returneda few days later and won the Mega Rampevent.

After taking a break to heal, the 35-year-old Burnquist said he started skat-ing again about two weeks ago. He saidhe is feeling good and ready for thisweekend.

“I just want to make my runs andmake sure I express my skateboardingthe best as possible in Ocean City,” hesaid.

Toyota has been a headline sponsor ofthe Dew Tour and also sponsors Burn-

quist, the No. 1 BMX rider in the world,Jamie Bestwick and BMX rider DrewBezanson.

The three athletes can be found thisweekend in the Toyota booth in the DewTour Experience, where they will be sign-ing autographs and meeting fans.

“A great part of what we do is havingthat interaction with fans,” said Burn-quist, who is also a certified helicopterpilot.

Steve McCann, who resides in Mel-bourne, Australia, is set to compete in theBMX Vert and the new Mega 2.0 eventsin Ocean City.

“The main thing is to keep it on twowheels and give it your all so you have achance of winning,” he said. “Most of thefield is pretty tough. Jamie [Bestwick] isusually the one to beat. He’s the reigningchamp.”

McCann is coming off a win in the XGames BMX Big Air event. He said ath-letes will have to deal with the elements, especially the wind when competing onthe beach.

“On the beach there is always wind offthe ocean. It’s a wait-and-see game, thenwe’ll have to adjust to it,” he said. “I’mexcited to come back to Ocean City.”

When he is not in his native Australia,McCann spends his time in Woodward,Pa. working with young riders. Duringoff time from competing this weekend, fans can find McCann in the Mongoosebooth signing autographs.

different need, bringing action sports tothe next level with bigger, better events, hesaid.

“Our beach, city and mountain themeprovides a fresh and exciting direction forthe sports to progress, and each of thethree events will draw inspiration from thehost city to create its own identity,” Pry-bylo said. “The voices of the athletes andindustry members we’ve held panels withhave helped guide the development of thenew model, and we’re looking forward toit all coming together.”

Events scheduled for Ocean City in-clude Skate Vert and Skate Bowl, both of-fered last year, and new this year, a SkateBowl Legends contest, held Thursday, anda Skate Mega 2.0 competition.

BMX Park and Vert contests will be fea-tured again this year in the resort alongwith the new BMX Mega 2.0 and DewTour’s first-ever Flatland event, wherefour athletes will show off their skills.

Events kicked off last evening with theGoDaddy Surf Expression Session.

“For this year’s Dew Tour, we addedcompetitions that are popular with theathletes, and fit well with the beach settingin Ocean City. We’re always working tohelp progress and grow the sports we rep-resent,” Prybylo said last week. “AddingMega 2.0 allows our Skate and BMX Vertathletes to showcase their abilities in a newdiscipline that will be very exciting forspectators. Fans will be able to watch theMega 2.0 competitions right from thebeach. We had a great response to our

Skate Bowl Legends Jam in Portland, Ore.last year, and it made sense to bring it toOcean City to reflect the community’scommitment to bowl skating.”

Also, nine musical acts — the biggestline-up in Dew Tour history — will be fea-tured throughout three days, Aug. 16-18.

The festival village, now dubbed the“Dew Tour Experience,” has been ex-panded this year to include more booths, autograph signings and activities to reflecta true experience of the action sportslifestyle and culture. The Dew Tour Expe-rience opens daily at noon.

“The amount of TV coverage OceanCity got last year was incredible. It gener-ated a huge amount of exposure for OceanCity that you can’t buy,” said Susan Jones, executive director of the Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association. Similarly,Abbott said she heard nothing but positivecomments following the 2011 event, in-cluding how great the town looked on na-tional television. The Dew Tour PantechOpen broadcasts were made available inmore than 200 million households inmore than 50 countries.

“Certainly there is a positive impact onour economy with an event of this magni-tude, but it also brings the town increasedexposure with the national television cov-erage,” she said. “Last year’s Dew Tourbrought the town over 900 million im-pressions (number of views an ad can re-ceive), which is tremendous in terms ofpromoting Ocean City.”
