FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

We offi cially “inaugurate” the 30th anniversary of Nativity Prep’s storied mission and work this September as we begin

a uniquely diffi cult school year. Our theme of “Nativity at 30: A History of Success, a Future of Hope” is apt for these

circumstances. While these challenges are immense, there is great consolation and encouragement in refl ecting on the

incredible impact of these last thirty years and the hope that such refl ection engenders for our next thirty years.

In 1990, Barry Hynes, Boston Jesuits, and a committed group of supporters had a simple but radical vision - provide a free,

rigorous and formative Jesuit educational opportunity to Boston boys from low-income families. Thirty years, two school

buildings, dozens of committed faculty & staff, and thousands of supporters from across the country later, that vision has borne

great fruit and had tremendous impact - 375 alumni “men for others” pursuing educational opportunity and living out their

vocations and 75 current students preparing to follow in their footsteps.

Our work is not done, and the need for this unique education, community, and support is still great. Local public schools

continue to feature signifi cant achievement gaps, many Catholic schools have sadly had to close, and private education

continues to become more expensive. In many ways, Nativity is needed as a “guiding star” more than ever.

With your incredible support, encouragement, and generosity, we are not resting on the laurels of thirty years of success but

instead improving and strengthening our foundational education, expanding our Graduate Support programs and efforts, and

stretching into career networking and guidance for alumni. Together, we are building a future of hope through a transformative

education, a lifetime commitment of support, and a “community for others”.

Thank you for being a part of the Nativity family and for your continued support of our mission.

Gratefully,

Brian P. MaherPresident

Kevin recently graduated Nativity as a member of the class

of Castiglione, and began his freshman year at BC High in

September, where he is a Donahue Scholar.

I think Nativity has teachers that are really dedicated to their jobs. Not all schools are like that, so we’re lucky to have a school that really helps their students challenge themselves. I’m thankful for Nativity because they’ve helped me to learn and grow in so many ways.

Nativity is by far the most infl uential academic experience of my life - especially because every other experience that followed was built on my Nativity foundation. It provided a learning environment that allowed me to fl ourish and that was authentic to me and my cultural ways of being and knowing.

’What an amazing middle school, you are so lucky,’ is a common response when I describe Nativity. From teaching me how to wear a tie, to showing me how to be a man for others, to helping place me into one of the top high schools, to supporting me in college with fi nancial support, Nativity has supported me in so many ways.

OUR VISION

When Nativity was founded, it was a “shoestring”

operation attempting to address the serious,

complex issue of educational equity and access

through a new model - a tuition-free, Jesuit middle

school. Thirty years later, Nativity Boston is the

oldest of over 50 Nativity-model schools and has

provided a transformative education to over 450

students & alumni. Built on a unique model, Nativity

Boston continues to innovate to improve its core

4th-8th education and provide even more extensive

Graduate Support “from classroom to career”.

Page 32: 082020r5 NP Annual Report-text-F - Nativity Preparatory School

That is what makes a Nativity Prep education a reality for boys from low-income families in Boston. The only tuition-free private school for boys in Boston, Nativity Prep provides a rigorous 4th-8th grade Jesuit education and life-long graduate support to our alumni in high school, college, and career.

AND HOPE
