DISCUSSION
Instructions:
Discuss – Is IT a profession?
Refer to McDermid (2008, pp.281-282) , McDermid provides a comparison with the architecture profession, suggesting that IT is not a profession as it has no licensing or registration arrangements in place. However as IT is a relatively new profession and cannot be described as mature like architecture. McDermid suggests that IT is an immature profession which will develop into a fully recognized one as governments and employers recognize the benefits of a registration process that becomes an expected perquisite to employment within the industry.

Professional have an agreement with the employer at the beginning of employment
Salary, working conditions.
However, they also have a responsibility to the profession
What happens when the expectations of the employer conflict with the requirements of the profession?
Areas such as piracy and trade secrets might be relevant

Jobs for the Future (2010-2020)
Mobile application development: one of the world's fastest growing occupations. As smart phones and tablets continue to change the way we communicate, do business, and access news & entertainment, the demand for new and innovative mobile apps is growing at an incredible speed. This increased demand translates to one of the largest IT skills gaps ever realized – there are simply more mobile app development job openings than skilled application developers to fill them
Database administrator: businesses are accumulating record amounts of digital information, spurring the need for trained and certified DBAs to store, organize, analyze and secure this data. In addition, as more databases are connected to the Internet, cloud, data security will become increasingly vital and complex
Software engineer: demand for software engineers will rise along with technological advancements and the proliferation of emerging network technologies. For example, increased corporate adoption of cloud and virtualization strategies will create a surge in demand for applications software engineers who can design and develop secure web-based programs
Video game designer: beyond the booming market for traditional console and PC games, the increased popularity, processing power and graphics capabilities of mobile devices has unlocked a new world of employment opportunities for game designers, artists and programmers. Video game designers with mobile software development expertise will be especially sought after as smart phones & tablets, such as the iPhone and iPad

Software as a Service (SaaS) is a software distribution model in which applications are hosted by a vendor or service provider and made available to customers over a network, typically the Internet.
Virtualization is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, such as an operating system, a server, a storage device or network resources.

Summary section:
ask yourself: What do I want people to remember about me? How can I develop a summary that truly reflects who I am? What are my passions? How am I different than those with similar backgrounds? How can I make my summary more compelling so that people are intrigued about getting to know me more?
Emphasise value add:
While mastery of a specific language, platform, or applications is certainly important, it usually doesn’t end up being the primary differentiator amongst candidates. What makes a candidate stand out to those making the hiring decisions is their ability to add value to a project team, consistently come up with solutions that can save time and/or money, and make a positive contribution to the company culture. Be sure to emphasize these points in your summary.
Include a professional highlights section:
This way you get to emphasize some key achievements in the very beginning before getting into the experience section that’s in the lower part of your profile.

Nicole Williams LinkedIn Connection Director says
"LinkedIn is about relationships that reflect who you are as a professional”
"You have to be discerning about who's in your Rolodex. You should be able to call any one of them for an opportunity, ask them legitimate career questions, and have some semblance of a relationship with them”

Ethical Considerations
Ethical Frameworks:
unquestionable rights and wrongs: there are basic and unquestionable rights and wrongs. For example theft and deceit are always wrong
PMI Code of Ethics:
Responsibility: Responsibility is our duty to take ownership for the decisions we make or fail to make, the actions we take or fail to take, and the consequences that result.
Respect: Respect is our duty to show a high regard for ourselves, others, and the resources entrusted to us. Resources entrusted to us may include people, money, reputation, the safety of others, and natural or environmental resources. An environment of respect engenders trust, confidence, and performance excellence by fostering mutual cooperation — an environment where diverse perspectives and views are encouraged and valued.
Fairness: Fairness is our duty to make decisions and act impartially and objectively. Our conduct must be free from competing self interest, prejudice, and favouritism
Honesty: Honesty is our duty to understand the truth and act in a truthful manner both in our communications and in our conduct.

Why get Certified?
Are flexible. PMI certifications are not based on one specific methodology, so they’re flexible and adaptable. You can easily transfer them between industries, market segments and geographic locations.
Keep you up-to-date. PMI continually conducts in-depth studies to ensure that our credentials actually reflect the current skills, knowledge and best practices you need to succeed.
Encourage professional growth. You never have to worry about a PMI certification becoming obsolete. Our certification maintenance program requires you to earn professional development units (PDUs), which encourages you to continually develop your skills and stay current as the profession changes.
Help you get ahead. PMI certification offers financial benefits — The PMI Project Management Salary Survey — Seventh Edition shows that certification positively impacts project manager salaries — and helps you stand out and better market yourself to prospective employers.
Are renowned throughout the world. Part of that marketability comes from the prestige of PMI certifications. PMI has provided project management certifications for over 25 years, and our PMP® credential was the first one designed specifically for project managers. Also, the quality of our certification governance is an advantage to those or earn or seek one of our certifications (PMI, 2013)
