FIRST STEPSTEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC

9TH AUGUST 2017JESUS CALMS THE STORM

(AGAIN!)There is great excitement at our house todaybecause this afternoon we are going to have ourFirst Steps Teddy Bears’ Picnic. It only happensonce a year so it’s a very special event. Ournaughty little sheep and his friends are reallylooking forward to it. We all walk up to churchearly today because there’s lots to get ready. Jan,Colin and Linda have all come along to help setthings up. Many hands make light work, or so theysay! Our naughty little sheep and his friends keepwell out of the way. I think that they’re frightenedsomeone is going to ask them to do something!There are toys to get out and food to prepare,among other things and it takes quite a while buteventually we’re all ready. The only down side isthe weather. It is absolutely pouring with rain. Itcouldn’t be wetter if it tried. Not exactly theweather for a picnic! Will anyone brave the rainto come and join us?Grandma Barbara is first in with Reuben andCecily and what’s more she’s brought a homemade lemon drizzle cake for our feast! Isn’t thatkind? Gradually others drift in, too, dripping withrain. It is so good to see them. How lovely thatthey want to join us in spite of the terrible weather.Some bigger children have come along, too. It isso good to see more familiar faces. Our naughtylittle sheep and his friends are so pleased andexcited to see everyone. I have let them choseour story for today and they have chosen “JesusCalming the Storm”. Sort of appropriate, I feel!When everyone is sitting comfortably and ourcandles are lit, we begin, our story. Jesus and hisdisciples are on a boat, sailing across the Sea ofGalilee. Jesus has taken the chance to have a bitof a rest on a big soft cushion while the disciplessail the boat. Some of them are fishermen so they

know what they’re doing. But suddenly a stormblows up and the boat is rocked from side to side.The wind howls and water begins to flood into theboat. The disciples are scared, sure that the boatis going to sink. They rush to find Jesus but he’sstill fast asleep. They shake him vigorously, tryingto wake him from his deep slumber. When hefinally rouses they tell him that the boat is goingto sink and they will all drown in the deep lake,unless something can be done. Jesus goes up tothe prow of the ship, holds out his arms and says,“Peace be still.” The waves subside and the windis calm again. Just like that! The disciples arethen a little bit afraid of Jesus. They ask eachother, “Who is this man, that even the winds andwaves obey him?” They realise that Jesuspossesses great power that they don’t reallyunderstand!Everyone has listened really well to our story andmade howling wind noises just at the right times.They’ve jingled up a storm with their bells andthen been quiet for our prayers. The teddies andother animals that have come along, have beenvery good too. We blow out our candles and it’stime for our Picnic Feast, even if we can’t go intothe garden because it is still raining really hard!There is fruit and crisps, biscuits and cakes toeat. Lots of different things to chose from. Thechildren have a lovely time playing together, littleones and big ones. Mums, Grandmas and a Dadplay with the children, munch and chat. It is sogood just to be together and our naughty littlesheep and his friends have hadlots to eat and a wonderful timewatching everything that’s goingon. They hope very much thatlots of our friends will join us forour next First Steps service on13th September. Autumn will beon its way. That’s a scarythought isn’t it?

On Tuesday 15 August Mothers' Unionheld their annual garden party Tea @ 3.We were fortunate that due to goodweather we were able to hold it outsideand use the new decking and tree seat.

Members and guests enjoyed themselveswith lots of tea and cake consumed along

with ice cream and lemonade. Gameswere available, including how many wordscould be made out of "mothers union".A raffle with a good assortment of prizeswas popular along with a bring a buy stall.Over £200 was raised towards mothers'union funds, especially RDMU AFIA(away from it all) which provides holidaysfor people who are unable to afford one.The September meeting will be a filmnight further details to follow.

"On 3 August 2017 four of our Christ Church MUmembers - Sheila, Jacqueline, Rosemary andAnne - met at Gravesend station at 9am to travelto London to visit Mary Sumner House, theMothers' Union Headquarters. On arrival we weremade very welcome and after coffee, a shortopening worship and Midday Prayers (conductedby Jacqueline) we were provided with a very nicepacked lunch. There were visitors from a numberof different dioceses and even some fromoverseas. We shared a table with Wendy fromChichester Diocese.

In the entrance hall of Mary Sumner House is avery old MU banner which is kept behind glass butwas taken out and paraded at the 140thanniversary of MU last year. The squares ofmaterial in the two bottom corners of the bannerare from Mary Sumner's wedding dress!After lunch we were taken on a guided tour ofseveral rooms in the building, also the chapel andthe gift shop. Each room tells the story in wordsand pictures of different aspects of the work of theMothers' Union in this country and throughout theworld and it was inspiring to discover how so many

projects are making such adifference to so many lives.We gathered back in themain hall in the afternoon fora Service of Thanksgiving(again led by Jacqueline)and she shared the stagewith Lynne Tembey(Worldwide President of MU)and Bev Julien (ChiefExecutive Officer of MU).We had a very pleasant dayout, good weather, problem-free journeys and arrivedback at Gravesend about6pm."

Archbishop of Canterbury becomespatron of charity Charis TiwalaCharis, which began with outreach in 2008 and wasregistered as a charity in 2014, works with women inthe sex industry.

Charis keyworkers and volunteers reach out to women byvisiting establishments such as saunas, and offeringchaplaincy and befriending services. Charis aims to engageat whatever the point of need is with the utmost care andrespect for each person.During the week, Charis staff build relationships with womenin different ways, including baking courses, Bible studies,Pilates classes and assistance with sexual health.Charis exists to give people in the sex industry theopportunity for choice again (where so many of their choiceshave previously been taken from them); a choice to exit ifthey wish, and a choice to rebuild a new life as they wouldchoose to live it.The founder and director of Charis, who we haven’t namedfor safeguarding reasons, says, “For those who work atCharis, Jesus has totally changed our lives. We want thewomen to know Jesus loves them, and can change theirlives too if they want that. Some of the women have been

very open to faith and God. It’s been an incredible journeyfor us as a team.“We have seen some of the women leave the industry andget new jobs. Some have become Christians. The other sideis that we’ve seen women being horrifically exploited, andone woman who was murdered. But it is a privilege to dothis work and see the difference that God can make inpeople’s lives.”Charis receives funding from churches and individualdonors. Archbishop Justin first visited Charis in October2015 and has been a keen advocate of its work.“If you want to see the kind of things Jesus Christ is doingin the world, take notice of Charis,” he says. “If you want toexperience the hope this Jesus Christ brings, meet thewomen of Charis. If you want to weigh up the cost of servingin Jesus Christ’s name, consider the faith of the women whobegan Charis. If you want to show your love for Jesus Christand the transformation he brings, support his work throughthe ministry of Charis.”The Charis team say, “It’s an honour to have ArchbishopJustin as a patron of Charis. We hope it will encouragechurch leaders to engage with some of the issues thatwomen who are sex workers face, and to advocate for them.Women in the sex industry often feel isolated, unseen andunvalued, our hope is that this will give them a sense ofbeing seen and valued.”
