The verse above tells Timothy to adhere, as Charles
Spurgeon put it, “tenaciously to the old truth”. He is
not to be swayed by anything that distracts from or competes with what he had already
been given. He was to be avoiding these influences as in “I avoid Chicago any way I can.”
He is to avoid that which is both profane and vain. The word profane referred to anything
outside a temple and the word vain meant empty of worth. The word babbling meant
worthless discussion. So Timothy was to avoid unsanctified, useless and doofus talk! An
example of this would be discussing whether Portland is a center of diabolical activity.
Although perhaps a case could be made, I have no inclination to talk about it. It falls in the
category of profane and vain useless talk (unless, you are planning on moving there!)
Oppositions (debates) of “science falsely so-called” is not talking about laboratory science.
The science in this text is the word knowledge and specifically refers to knowledge that is
being claimed as coming from God.
So Timothy was to avoid the current popular buzz feed and the claims of two-bit
prophets and focus on the truth he had been imparted in the gospel. I agree. “The
B i-b-l-e, yes that’s the Book for me! I stand alone on the Word of God, the B-i-b-l-e.”
