The Flying Toy

When their father came home with something hidden in his hands, his two young sons were eager to see what it was. Their father tossed the object into the air. Surprisingly, it did not drop. It flew across the room, struck the ceiling, fluttered there, and then drifted to the floor. The boys raced to play with the flying toy, which they soon named the “Bat.” They were most interested in taking the Bat apart to see how it worked. It was light in weight and made of cork, wood, and paper. A twisted rubber band provided the power that spun little propellers. The brothers built their own versions of the toy. The small ones flew well, but they were puzzled about why their larger ones failed.

The brothers never forgot this childhood event, which occurred in 1878. Many years later, the brother named Orville said that the toy inspired their interest in flight. That interest led to a major achievement in 1903—the first successful motor-powered flight of an aircraft. The brothers were Orville and Wilbur Wright, inventors of the airplane.

A Nation’s Treasures

What do a desert in California, a coral reef in Australia, and a tropical forest in Argentina have in common? They are all national parks. A national park is an area that a nation’s government has set aside to protect it from farming, mining, logging, and other disturbances. The park is open to visitors, who come to walk, hike, swim, camp, explore, watch wildlife, and gasp in wonder at splendid sights.

The world’s first national park was established in the United States in 1872. Yellowstone National Park is located mainly in northwestern Wyoming. This park is still extremely popular, with more than two million visitors each year. People come to explore a volcanic landscape unlike any other, filled with hot springs and hot water exploding from geysers.

Yellowstone inspired the development of more parks. There are now thousands of national parks throughout the world. Many, like Yellowstone, protect land, water, and wildlife. Others protect a nation’s historic sites, such as battlegrounds and important buildings. By setting up national parks, governments help preserve a nation’s treasures for generations to come.

Poles ApartOn a globe of Earth, the North Pole is the central point at the top, and the South Pole is at the bottom. How are the polar regions alike and different?

Both polar regions are covered in ice and snow. Both have long, dark, extremely cold winters. During the short, warmer summers, the Sun never sets. The seasons in the north and south occur at opposite times of the year.

The northern polar region is the Arctic. Surrounding the North Pole is the Arctic Ocean, which is mainly frozen. Land masses reach up into the ocean from the south, and plants bloom in spring when snow melts. Polar bears, snowy owls, and Arctic foxes are some of the animals that live on land. People of the Arctic have lived by hunting and fishing.

The South Pole is surrounded by a giant land mass, Antarctica. It is the coldest and windiest continent on the planet. Penguins come onto land to breed, but other animals live only in the surrounding ocean. There are almost no plants. Until scientists arrived in the 20th century, no people lived here.

Silent Cal

Calvin Coolidge served as president of the United States from 1923 to 1928. He was a shy person who rarely smiled and never chatted. In a speech to lawmakers when he helped govern a state, he urged, “And be brief; above all things, Be Brief.” He himself was extremely brief. His reputation for being a man of few words led to a nickname, Silent Cal. Reporters were fond of spreading stories about the shortness of Coolidge’s remarks.

According to one tale, Coolidge went to church one Sunday while his wife stayed home. When he returned, his wife asked him what the sermon was about. “Sin,” answered Coolidge.

“But what did the minister say about it?” Mrs. Coolidge wanted to know.

Coolidge considered for a moment. Then he replied, “He was against it.”

According to another tale, Coolidge was attending a dinner party and was seated next to a friendly young woman. The woman said to him, “I’ve just made a bet that I can get you to say more than two words to me.”

Coolidge turned to her without smiling and said, “You lose.”
