Saint Mary’s Altar Society Beautiful statue restorations have

recently been delivered back to our

church. The Blessed Virgin Mary and

St. Joseph with the child Jesus, have

    been meticulously repaired and re-

stored as a most generous gift from an

    anonymous parishioner. Two additional

gifts were purchased by the Altar Socie-

ty for the statue of Mary. She is now

adorned with a golden crown contain-

ing colored stones and is holding a new

white rosary around her hands. The members of the

Altar Society are most grateful for the donation of

these statue restorations for all the parishioners to

enjoy now and forever. May God bless our special

benefactor. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas

and a blessed New Year ahead.

    Nancy Goble, President

    St. Mary’s Altar Society

It is with deep gratitude that Holy Cross Church

acknowledges the most generous gift of the recent

statue restorations of the Blessed Virgin Mary and

St. Joseph with the child Jesus, that have been

placed back in the sanctuary. This parishioner also

    donated the restoration of St.

    Thérèse and the Sacred Heart

statues last spring that are in the

alcoves on either side of the pews.

    This generosity of an anonymous

    parishioner has been overwhelming

to our church. All four statues have

    been beautifully restored. On behalf

of Holy Cross Church, I extend our

most sincere thank you for your

    donation. God bless you.

  • “Like” us on at http://www.facebook.com/MendotaHolyCross by Brian Corrigan

The first reading from Sirach shows a kind of format for

the roles and responsibilities of the various family mem-bers; “God sets a father in honor over his children; a moth-er’s authority he confirms over her sons…” This echoes somewhat the fourth commandment to honor our fathers and mothers. Sirach shows how the father is the head of the family unit.

The second reading from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Co-lossians, supports that and also shows how the mother is the heart of the family, as the father is the head. From a purely human physical standpoint, we cannot live without a head or a heart; both are essential to the life of the or-ganism.

In the Gospel today, we hear of the Presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple. After the proper number of days as prescribed by Jewish law, Mary and Joseph bring the child to the Temple to present and consecrate the child to the Lord God. This was to bring the first male child to the Lord—in essence paying God with the “first fruits” of our own loving human relationship.

We also learn from this Gospel passage of the poverty of Mary and Joseph. Offering “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons” is only part of the law that prescribes what is to be offered in sacrifice to the Lord. The law actually prescribes that a lamb be offered in sacrifice, and if the parents cannot afford a lamb, then they may offer a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. And as this is what Mary and Joseph offer, we know they were not even rich enough to purchase a lamb for sacrifice.

I encourage you to re-read today’s readings slowly and deliberately to absorb and be nourished by the instruction given. Sirach points out that whoever honors his own father atones for sins and preserves himself from sin, as well. This is grace. It is obeying God in his commandments, living righteously and justly, and piously living a life in faith. This is all well and good, but it does not account for love.

Look back to the beginning of the quote from Pope Ben-edict…”The family is the privileged setting where every per-son learns to give and receive love.” When parents model and exhibit love for their children, they are doing quite a lot in the way of teaching and training their children in the Christian life.

Let us all look to, pray to, ask the intercession of, the Holy Family, that we may be rewarded in grace and peace

    in our homes now. +JMJ+

Even though Christmas day was Friday, the Church recognizes that one day is not enough to celebrate God’s greatest gift, and so we continue on with our Christmas celebration for a full eight days—an Octave!

Today, in addition to Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

Let’s examine the readings and see what they tell us… Let me begin by framing this using the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI: “The family is the privileged setting where every person learns to give and receive love…. The family is an intermediate institution between individuals and society, and nothing can completely take its place….

foundation for society, and a great and lifelong treasure for couples. It is a unique good for children, who are meant to be the fruit of love, of the total and generous self-giving of their parents.... The family is also a school

It goes without saying that our religious education program for the public school students has not gotten off the ground very well, which is really contrary to my approach and vision for your children and your families.

To begin this walk, let me first start by saying “thank you” to each family reading this and working with their children or grandchildren. That is my vision. To have the parents in their rightful role of primary religious educator for their children. The religious education program should be strictly a secondary function, offering support, guidance and materials where needed.

As a family active in faith, there should be prayer in the home, and plenty of it. Do you pray with your children? Parents and guardians should be showing children the importance of prayer in the Christian life.

Our Blessed Mother, Mary, is the absolute best model of a human person who lives a life devoted to the will of God. Mary understood that God is love, and when she was approached by the Archangel Gabriel at the Annunciation, she was startled and in her humility wondered why she should be the one chosen to be the Mother of the Lord. Nonetheless, she said yes to God through the archangel. Mary was totally obedient to God in spirit and in will. After all, to love as God loves is an act of the will, not an emotional response to some external stimulus.

We also know—mostly from Traditional sources—but also from the Scriptures that Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, was a righteous man (Matt. 1:19). When Joseph learned that Mary was with child, he determined that in order to save her from trouble, he would divorce her quietly. The bottom line is that Joseph was determined to live his life in discernment to the will of God according to the laws of Moses.

Mary and Joseph cared deeply and well for the child Jesus. In Luke, chapter 2, verses 41 thru 52, we can read of the time when Jesus, at the age of twelve was found in the Temple among the teachers questioning them and answering their questions, to the astonishment of the teachers. At the end of the passage we read that “Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man” (LK 2:52).

Mary and Joseph model for us the saintly and responsible approach to parenthood, and Jesus models for us perfect obedience to his parents, both earthly and heavenly.

How Should a Family Live Its Faith Together?

† How do parents respect their children? God entrusted children to parents so that they might be steady, righteous examples for those children, that they might love and respect them and do everything possible so that their children can develop physically and spiritually. Children are a gift from God and not the property of the parents. Before they are their parents' children, they are God's children. The primary duty of parents is to present to their children the Good News and to communicate the Christian faith to them.

† How should a family live its faith together? A Christian family should be a miniature church. All Christian family members are invited to strengthen one another in faith and to outdo one another in their zeal for God. They should pray for and with each other and collaborate in works of charity. Parents stand in for their children with their own faith, have them baptized, and serve as their models of faith. That means that parents should make it possible for their children to experience how valuable and beneficial it is to live in the familiar presence of the loving God. At some time, however, the parents, too, will learn from their children's faith and hear how God speaks through them, because the faith of young people is often accompanied by greater devotion and generosity and "because the Lord often reveals to a younger person what is better" (St. Benedict of Nursia, Rule, chap. 3, 3). Remote Learning vs. Absence Beginning Immediately

As with anything new, we have learning to do. We have refined our expectations for what it means to be a remote learner and what it means to be absent. Students still need to attend appointments, etc. You can contact your child’s teacher because we still need to take attendance each day.

Here is an explanation. We hope it clarifies this for you. You or your child can email their teacher if you have any questions.

    Remote Learning (cont’d)

If you or your child is sick and the work can not be completed, please contact the teachers. We are dealing with many different circumstances. Also, if the teachers are sick or unable to teach, they will let your child know through google classroom or their school email.

Collect Your Empty Cartridges One of our fundraisers is to collect your empty ink cartridges.

Scrip The Scrip order form is in the File Library in OptionC. The businesses listed are only a few of the choices. If there is something you would like that is not listed, please write it on the order form and write the amount that you want.

You can always direct your questions to Lorraine Walter in the business office at 538-6151.

This is an easy fundraiser for the school and it helps reduce your tuition for next year, as well.

  • WHY ARE WE HERE? WHAT’S LIFE ALL ABOUT?

Sometimes we get so caught up in the depth of our faith that we forget what it was like to first wrestle with the big questions – Who am I? What am I searching for? What’s our shared story? Who is Jesus? Why do we need a Church? Is there a God? We all need to get back to the basics to make sure the foundation is strong.

We are continuing on with Session 5 on Wednesday, December 30 at 6:30 p.m. We

have found that it helps to watch the video ahead of time and just be prepared to
