There was a remarkable lack of divisiveness, once theconference began, on most issues under consideration.

A number of resolutions passed without a dissentingvote.

However there were some dissenting voices and protestregarding the fact that women were not fully representedat the gathering.

Only 11 delegations of the 114 nations representedincluded even one woman.

    Conclusion

The conference in Stockholm accomplished almost everythingthe preparatory committee had planned. It was widely consideredsuccessful, and many observers were almost euphoric about theextent of agreement.

In a speech to the nations gathered in Stockholm, theanthropologist Margaret Mead called the event

"a revolution in thought fully comparable to the Copernican revolution by which, fourcenturies ago, men and women were compelled to revise their whole sense of the earth'splace in the cosmos. Today we are challenged to recognize as great a change in our conceptof man's place in the biosphere."
