President’s Message: Mary Derrick November Newsletter Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and we have so much to be thankful for, don’t we? We live in a wonderful community—Cary! It has so much to offer, doesn’t it? I’m grateful for my move here in 2005 and all of the wonderful people who have crossed my path. I’m incredibly grateful to know all of the wonderful women I’ve met in the Cary Woman’s Club. Our members moved here from far and wide, and yet we’re all connected. We’ve joined together, not just for fellowship, but mainly to help contribute to our community, which the club has done so well for so many years. The Duke School of Nursing hosted a luncheon, free to our members, on Wednesday, October 5, at the Prestonwood Country Club. The talk on dementia was very timely, and they are planning another one in February on women’s heart issues. Be watching out for that! Also, on Saturday, October 15, the District 6 Fall meeting was held at the Woman’s Club of Raleigh. There was a lot of information on reporting (!!!). Actually, not too many like the prospect of gathering up all of our data for that, but it will be interesting to see how much work CWC has done in our community during 2016. We really appreciate all of the time, talent, and treasure that our members contribute! There was plenty of “orange” to go around during Halloween, but don’t put up all of your orange just yet! November is filled with a lot of opportunities to display all of the fall colors, including orange. I love seeing all of the beautiful colors of the falling leaves, and knowing that another season is with us. Take time to go outside and enjoy our beautiful fall weather. Be thankful! Members, You’ve Made A Difference! As Thanksgiving Day approaches, Our blessings we recall; The things we are most thankful for, We recollect them all. You are really special, In all you say and do. Thursday, October 13th, 2016 9:30 a.m. (Coffee & Social) 10:00 a.m. (Program & Business Meeting) __________________________________________________________________________________ Subject: 2 Community Service Project applications Hi all, There are 2 applications one for Public Issues and one for International Outreach attached for your review and on which we will call for a vote at November’s meeting. The International Outreach application has been amended as follows - instead of purchasing fabric to sew 12 hospital gowns (as there may not be enough sewers) those monies will be used to offset the cost of a cleft lip surgery. The monies allocated for the NO SEW blankets will remain the same. I did not ask Linda Turovlin to submit a new application as the purpose remained the same. Thanking you in advance for your consideration of these 2 worthwhile CSP applications. Silvia ________________________________________________________________ Subject: Newsletter -- Christmas Luncheon Please include the following in the November newsletter. Pecan Sales CWC Fall Games Festival A delightful afternoon of friend raising, fundraising and plain ole fun was had by all on Friday, October 21st at Christ the King Lutheran Church. We had 28 attendees of which 14 were CWC members and received four donations from those who could not attend. The ladies enjoyed tasty sweet and savory treats and learned to play some new games coupled with revivals of old favorites. Along with the bridge groups and games, we had a table of Mah-Jongg players which further added to the dimension of the varied venue! A special thank you to CWC’s Ways and Means members for contributing their time and talents to make this event possible: Silvia, Deborah, Nell, Cathy M, Mary-Mel, Jane, Dorothy, Gerry, Susan and Maryanne. A heartfelt thank you to a non-member, Pam Mariarossi, who donated four lovely plants as door prizes and the lovely beaded lanyards given away as gifts for winning at Lemon Bingo. What a special group of women you are! - Mercedes

Pecan Sales - Due to the unforeseen heavy rainfalls this year, the pecans will not be available at the November 10th meeting but will be ready prior to Thanksgiving. The grower wants to be sure we get the best, freshest pecans possible. You will be notified at a later date as to when they will be available to be picked up or delivered.

Cary Woman’s Club Is Sponsoring

The Mobile Volunteering Program From Note in the Pocket

The “MVP” program offered by Note in the Pocket is designed to bring volunteering opportunities to companies and organizations that want to be more involved in their community as well as develop team building and trust between their employees. We bring the entire process to your site. During this event, we will quality control, and sort clothing to make them shelf ready. This will enable our on-site volunteers to efficiently prepare a bag for one of the many children in need in Wake County. Participants pay $14 each which covers a box lunch (Provided by Ruckus 4 at the Arboretum) and a donation to Note in the Pocket!! Event: Friday November 18, 2016 from 10am to 1pm

Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, Corner of Kildaire Farm Rd and Maynard, Cary, NC To register your attendance please email: [email protected] Come join us today to see what the Cary Woman’s Club is all about!!! Note in the Pocket believes it is unacceptable that children should suffer in their educational and social development due to a lack of weather and school appropriate clothes. All children should arrive at school feeling comfortable and confident. It is our goal to “Dress Students for Academic Success” and this program is designed to help us do just that. _______________________________________________

International Outreach Let’s recognize and celebrate this day in November! November 19—World Toilet Day

Secretary-General (United Nations) Ban Ki-moon stated, “The 2030 Agenda calls on us to renew our efforts in providng access to adequate sanitation worldwide. We must continue to educate and protect communities at risk, and to change cultural perceptions and long-standing practices that hinder the quest for dignity.”

Why? 2.4 billion people do not have adequate sanitation. 1 billion people still defecate in the open. Poor sanitation increases the risk of disease and malnutrition, especially for women and children. Women and girls risk rape and abuse, because they have no toilet that offers privacy. How to commemorate? Help promote the idea that more needs to done. Tweet #wecantwait and demand that everyone worldwide must have access to a toilet. _______________________________________________________________________________

Public Issues: From: Karen We are still collecting for our Interact baskets. We need toiletries, scarves, gloves, journals, notecards, and other small items that are appropriate for the Moms. There will be a collection basket at the meeting. Thank you. - Karen Fiumara _______________________________________________________________________________

Education News Heard through the grapevine, as I did not attend, that Christine Bonaventure, the Wake Tech student who received our Mature Woman scholarship, and who spoke at our March 2015 CWC meeting, introduced Hillary Clinton at her rally at Wake Tech last month. And best of all, the Cary Woman’s Club scholarship was mentioned, as one of the keys to Christine’s success! Unfortunately, I can’t find that clip, but here is a link to a photo and to the last part of Christine’s introduction of Secretary Clinton. Conservation CSP and media! The Pollinator Garden is still in bloom, but our CWC volunteers will be working with our partner organizations in November to “put the garden to bed”. Please enjoy the garden on your way to the November 10 meeting. In addition, the Pollinator Garden was featured in the Fall Issue of The Innkeeper, the newsletter of the Friends of the Page-Walker. Also, featured in The Innkeeper was an article on honored trees at the Page-Walker, and a very nice mention and photos about the Oral Histories that Peggy Van Scoyoc took from several of our very special long-time members who are also community leaders. The Cary Woman’s Club has been IN THE NEWS for important contributions to the community. (The Innkeeper attached) ~ Lois Nixon
