As an apprentice you should expect to be registered with the state as soon as possible.

You should receive an apprentice registration card that will track your hours.

If you’re pursuing an electronics career there is no state apprenticeship requirements.

You may not be able to follow all the standards because of existing conditions, especially on service calls.

The key is to install better than those before you, apply wiring practices that follow NEC and then come as close to the standards as possible.

Within a span of approximately two years you will be qualified to take a test for your trade license.

After successful completion of the exam you will receive a journeyman’s license.

You should expect to receive a raise when the license is in your pocket.

LICENSE DESCRIPTIONS;

C5/C6: The holder of this license may perform only work limited to low voltage, alarm or signal work, audio and sound systems, and telephone interconnect. The voltage of any system is not to exceed forty-eight volts or five amperes where such work commences at an outlet receptacle or connection previously installed by a person holding the proper electrical license.

The C5 is the contractors license, the C6 is the journeyman's license

L5/L6: The holder of this license may perform only work limited to low voltage, alarm or signal work, audio and sound systems. The installation or repair of any telecommunications work is not authorized with the exception of the interface wiring from an alarm system to an existing telephone connection for monitoring purposes. The voltage of the system is not to exceed 25 volts or five amperes where such work commences at an outlet receptacle or connection previously installed by a person holding the proper electrical license.

A licensed journey men can expect to get $18.00 dollars an hour.

Depending on the quality, speed, knowledge, diversity of skills and attitude you bring to the table, will determine how much more per hour you can make beyond the $18.00 an hour rate.

After holding your license for two years you will be qualified to apply for your contractors license.

The contractors license is typically for someone who wants to start their own business.

By law your license or card of registration has to be on you at all times, (everyday). If you get caught without the license you can expect a $100.00 dollar fine.

You must show it to any properly interested person.

As a licensed journeymen you will have to attend CEU courses, (continuing education units), every year for 4 hours, it was 7hrs.

If you do not attend CEU classes you will be fined $250.00 dollars.

If you let it go longer than a year the state will revoke your license and you will have to retest.

You may expect your employer to pay for your license renewal, this is generally not the case.

The license is issued to you and you bring it with you to any company you work for, some companies will pay for their apprentices to sit for the exam.

Licenses are renewed every year in September.

You have until October to send your payment in without late penalties.

After October the state adds on $10.00 a month for every month your payment is late.

Employers have to maintain apprentice to journeymen ratios as mandated by the state.

So as a licensed journeymen you are valuable, and who knows the company may pay for your renewal.

The journeyman’s license is $120.00 a year.

The contractors license is $150.00 a year.

This is when it is crucial to take notes and make sure you understand all that is required to complete a project.

As an apprentice and a technician you want to take advantage of any company training and industry certifications.

They are dozens of professional certifications for all of the low voltage systems, many are free.

You should also sign up for the trade journals that cover your interests and the industry your working in.
