Short History of APAN1996.3 The idea of “APAN” was born at APEC Symposiu
m in Japan, inspired by Dr. Steve Goldstein. <Kilnam Chon@KAIST & Michael McRobbie@ANU took t
he lead for realizing the regional broadband networks, APAN.>
1997.6 APAN was established, chaired by Kilnam Chon.1997.8 Michael McRobbie@IU submitted “TransPAC” prop
osal to NSF’s HPIIS solicitation.1998.8 TransPAC was granted as an HPIIS project. <APAN expanded the members as well as the networks.>2004.6 Most APAN members joined an IU-lead proposal fo
r NSF’s IRNC solicitation.2004.7 Shigeki Goto was elected APAN Chair.

North Asia is the core region of APAN:
- fat intra-regional pipes are shown left
- inter-regional links of APAN
- backbone links to USA
JP: TransPAC. JGN2, SINET, IEEAF
TW: TWAREN
KR: APII/KREONet2
HK: Gloriad

South East Asia
South East Asia networks are under developing.
Inter-regional links are provided by North Asia.
Each country has her own link to US; some are commercial links.
SG, MY and TH are working for intra-regional links, meeting with TEIN2.
Satellite links are required to cover islands.

Oceania
Sydney
AARnet got the dual 10Gbps pipes to USA, via Hawaii.
The link to APAN-JP is via Hawaii or LA in USA.
The direct link between AU and JP is being studied by both governments.
December 25, 2004 CERNET 10 years anniversary12
Other regions
-North Asia will make efforts to connect these regions, together with South East Asia: India will be the 1st target.
-Satellite links might be a solution at the initial phase.
- Efforts from EU & US are also expected.

Links between JP and US
SINET: NY OC192
JGN2: CHI OC192
TransPAC: LA OC48
IEEAF: STL OC192
- TransPAC Layer 3 link and JGN2 link are the main JP-US links.
- SINET Layer 3 link provides the backup service for JP-US.
- IEEAF 8 X GbE links are for GLIF project.

JGN II link to Chicago
• Procket routers are adopted for OC192 SONET circuit for the time being. Procket PRO/8812 will be replaced by Juniper T640 in APAN-JP in a few months.
• StarLight is an XP focusing on Lambda networks, and the software maintenance for Procket routers has been terminated by Cisco.
• VLAN might be installed between Abilene and APAN via StarLight facilities.
December 25, 2004 CERNET 10 years anniversary19
Collaborations among multiple Links between JP and US
• The links have their own objectives as well as the policies, defined by the budget.
APAN-JP is using 3 JP-US links as the following preferences: TransPAC, JGN2 and SINET.
• Integrated network environments will be discussed by the engineers, followed by the understandings of the administrators to meet the users’ requirements .
• HOPI will be adopted for the smooth developments to Lambda Networks.

Observatory
• Abilene Observatory is being adopted for encouraging network researches:– Netflow Data ( flow-tools, rsync )– Throughput Data ( iperf & BWCTL )– Latency Information (OWAMP )– Usage Data (High Resolution SNMP, RRDtool )– etc.
• User Interface based on Weather Map• Raw data will be provided to authorized research
ers.

NSF’s IRNC projects
• APAN is a loosely-coupled network consortium, and multiple NSF’s IRNC projects will be granted to APAN members:– TransPAC2: APAN-JP & most APAN members lead by In
diana Univ.& Internet2 – Gloriad: CSTNet & KREONet2 lead by Greg Cole@UTK– Pacific WAVE: AARNet & U-Hawaii lead by USC
• These projects are required to have the good collaborations.
• All groups will surely work together under the flag “APAN”, though we might belong to different IRNC projects.
December 25, 2004 CERNET 10 years anniversary33
Collaborations between TransPAC2 and Gloriad
• Routes “RU-Beijing-HK-Tokyo-US” will be established.
• Joint research projects between Russia and Japan will be promoted. 16 joint research projects are listed:– 6 HEP projects– 6 Global environment projects– Others (Science Policy, e-VLBI, Biology,
Distance Learning)
