•PURPOSEPURPOSE Study the effects of an imperfect in-vehicle collision
avoidance warning system (IVCAWS) both on driver headway maintenance and on driver behavior in response to warning system errors
Four hypothesis Drivers have poor sense of safe headway and
tend to drive too close IVCAWS will help driver maintain proper headway This learning process will be retained long after The more reliable the system, the better the driver’s
performance

•PREVIOUS RESEARCHPREVIOUS RESEARCH
30% of all car crashes on public roads were rear end collisions
Study shows that people tend to overestimate headway regardless of number of years of driving experience
Believe sudden braking on highway won’t happen Believe if they match speed they won’t collide Reinforcement from past experience
“looking but not seeing”

•WHY IMPORTANTWHY IMPORTANT
Two human factors issues
Interface to use in relaying information from automatic system to driver
Auditory tone found to be most effective
How to analyze interaction between system and driver when both are capable of error
Combination of both system performance and driver’s subsequent behavior

•CONTRIBUTIONCONTRIBUTION
Help in training new drivers correct headway distance
Allow for a means of alerting drivers to situations they may not be aware of

•METHODMETHOD
30 participants – 15 male, 15 female 5 or more years of driving experience Grouped into 3 experimental groups based on
reliability of system
1997 Hyundai Accent with laser based headway detection device
4 trials for each participant
![Page 7: 1 Effects of an In-Vehicle Collision Avoidance Warning System on Short and Long-Term Driving Performance Presented by: Josh Essner & Scott Lubensky](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062300/56649d595503460f94a39056/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)

•ANALYSISANALYSIS Two way ANOVA between trial number and temporal
headway category Significant with p < 0.0001
Individual ANOVA tests between first trial and remaining 3
All significant with p < 0.0001
No significant effect of reliability of system or driver speed on headway maintenance

•CONCLUSIONSCONCLUSIONS
Drivers are generally poor at estimating temporal headway
Can be improved with use of IVCAWS
IVCAWS taught drivers to correctly assess temporal headway both immediately after use and six months later
Reliability of system had no effect on usefulness

•FURTHER WORKFURTHER WORK
Effects of IVCAWS on habitual behavior People choose on own free will to adjust their own
headways
Sensor on rear of car to help communication between drivers
Intelligent cruise control

•QUESTIONSQUESTIONS
Do you think that this system will help habitual driving habits?
