There are lots of things that are important to know but none is more important than to know for sure you have everlasting life. Jesus tells us how to know we have everlasting life... “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Let’s break down what Jesus said a few words at a time.

Jesus says, “For God so loved the world...” God loves everyone in the world, including you. Because He loves you, He cares about where you are going to spend eternity. But all of us have a problem. The Bible says, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The person in the drawing represents everyone in the world separated from God by sin.

As the solution to our sin problem, “…He gave His only begotten Son…” Jesus is God’s only begotten Son. God loved us so much that He gave Jesus as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). On the cross, He died for everything you have ever done wrong or ever will do wrong from the day you were born to the day you die.

Next, Jesus tells us what we must do. He says, “…whoever believes in Him…” He does not tell us to do good things, go to church, or anything else except to “believe in Him” for what God offers which is “everlasting life.” The one who “believes in Him” is pictured in the drawing.

The person who believes in Him is promised that he will “not perish.” In other words, whoever believes in Him will not be condemned and go to hell. As Jesus says, “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:17).

The believer will not perish, he has “everlasting life.” Everlasting life doesn’t begin when you die. Everlasting life begins the moment you believe in Jesus for it. Jesus says, “He who believes in Me has [right now] everlasting life” (John 6:47). Since it is “everlasting life,” it cannot last 10, 20, or 30 years and then be lost. It lasts forever.

Do you believe the words of Jesus that are found in John 3:16? If so, then you will not perish. You have everlasting life! That is the #1 most important thing you can possibly know.

After you receive everlasting life, Jesus wants you to serve and follow Him. He says, “If anyone serves Me, let Him follow Me” (John 12:26). Jesus will have really cool rewards for those that serve and follow Him. But this is a separate choice that in no way affects the fact that you have everlasting life the moment you believe.
